Red Steel - How is it?

I am liking this game more and more and more as I play it. At first, the cursor going off screen F'ing up the perspective got to me, but now that I've learned to largely work around that, this might be the most fun I've had with a FPS in quite a while. It's tough at times, no doubt about that, but there is a ton of interaction (and I love that the interaction is actually physical - knocking down tables, opening doors, actually MOVING your 'gun' forward to zoom in, etc). Swordplay is SO much fun - sure, it's not an exact 1:1 representation, but it's closer than I expected after some of the horror stories we heard. Just being in a sword fight and planning your next strike is a ton of fun and gets your blood pumping.

So yeah, it's a game with flaws, but it's for sure better than a 5.5-6 rated game in my book, no doubt.

My dad and I just played multiplayer Red Steel for easily over an hour. I'm killing him, but we're talking a guy who hasn't played video games since like Duck Hunt (and Wii Sports, which he loves). He'll probably be coming over more and more now that I have Wii, haha. He's having a sort of hard time with the controls, like I did when I first opened Red Steel, but he's getting used to it. Me personally, I'm totally comfortable with it.

Is there a two player sword match option anywhere that I'm missing?

By the way, Red Steel's graphics: HOT, I love them. Not 360/PS3 territory, but I am IMPRESSED!

I think I'm 31% through with the game after about 4-5 hours of gameplay. The controls are pretty much second nature to me now, at least what I've learned so far.

My dad has been playing the game as much as me. He came home from work and immediately hopped on the Wii and started playing. We had some stuff we had to do for Thanksgiving, but once that was finished, he hopped back on to play some more Red Steel. He's not a huge video game buff, but he's not completely incompetent. He usually likes FPS type stuff, and has really got into things like Doom, Goldeneye, and the Call of Dutys. As far as the controls go, he got used to it pretty quickly. He still has trouble with the sword fighting, but that's mainly because he didn't have the patience to learn how to block and parry.

A further review - the story still seems pretty crappy. The dialogue isn't that great. They keep calling me a gaijin and it seems like they are just going out of their way to say the word. I get it, I'm a foreigner.

Graphically, it's nothing ground breaking, but the game still looks pretty good. I haven't heard anyone complain about how bad it looks while playing (the story line cells are obviously boring).

The fact is though, the game is fun. I enjoy playing it. My dad, who plays maybe a game a year is having a bunch of fun playing it too. When he's going to play it he says "I'm going to kill some Japs"

Is anyone having trouble with the blocking controls? Every review seemed to say it was broken and never worked, but I never fail at blocking when I want to. Either they fixed it, or every reviewer was incompetent.

Agreed, I love the blocking/parry controls. I have yet to have trouble with it.

I mean, I've occasionally had it not work, but EVERY TIME it was attributed to me not doing the control properly - when I actually did it right, it worked right away.

So yeah, I don't know what that's all about...I haven't heard any actual players having trouble with that, only reviewers.

I have zero problems with sword controls being unresponsive. If something doesn't work that's because I spazed out or didnt act quick enough.

i just got read steel today as a present from my gf. after an hour i got used to the controls and the game took off from there. for some reason people from europe and asia love this game, but in america it got some bad reviews. to me the games pretty good.

i believed all the doubters and bad reviews.. but i decided to give it a shot...
rented the game, i've been playing for 2 hours straight

i think it's really fun once you get the controls down, which i still haven't perfected by any means but i wold definitely suggest this game..

semi-spoiler about sword fights which most people probably already know..
i wish you could cut their heads off at the end of the fight.. or at least like stab them or something, that would make this game so much better hahaha

I totally agree with you on your spoiler. I've been waiting for this weekend so my brother can come back and my friends can bring over an extra wii-mote. i found an extra wiimote today so we'll be playing 4-player deathmatches soon...

Oh man I bet four-player deathmatch would be fun. My dad and I had fun but the levels are so large that it leads to a lot of wandering around, just waiting to sneak up on the other guy. Four players would be more hectic and more fun.

So no multiplayer sword matches, eh? I figured that'd be automatic for this game. Oh well!

I've been playing this for a while (got through the first two "chapters" ...

I have to be really careful how far left I point the remote. If I go up and left too far or left, the characer will start turning right ... this is VERY frustrating.

I've changed the sensitivity and it's less when I have it on high, but it's VERY annoying to say the least.

Does anyone else have this? Is there something I can do to stop it?

It's only when I piont left.. going right works just fine, so I assume it's the game and how it was programmed.
I dunno about red steel, but I'm loving call of duty 3, just rented it today. I think the control setup is a blast. Really adds to the chaos of battle. Feeling actually tired and the tension of fighting off a nazi hand to hand is something else.
I have to second this... awesome game, IMO. Renting was smart, and I'd recommend it if you just want to play through it once. We bought it, and we're finished with it already.
I mean, I've occasionally had it not work, but EVERY TIME it was attributed to me not doing the control properly - when I actually did it right, it worked right away.

I think this is going to be one of the big problems with Wii and reviews or word of mouth from other people... not everyone can do the controls right easily. My hubby has a hell of a time in CoD3 with things like setting a charge, where it takes me about 5 seconds to do. I think if you don't make very clear, simple movements, you're gonna have issues. He's having the same prob tonight making air turns in Excite Truck.

I think we're all gonna have to be even more skeptical than usual with reviews, as far as the Wii is concerned... I'm thankful for CAG, so we can all learnt he real story ;) I probably wouldn't have bothered giving Red Steel a look if I hadn't read this thread! :)

Honestly njchris, I haven't really encountered that in an annoying way in a while. Perhaps I've just naturally phased out making the hand motions that cause it to happen, but I maneuver and turn and aim and all that without being too careful yet manage to avoid the glitches beyond it happening for a split second and then I instantly fix it without skipping a beat, no harm done. Sucks that it's still bothersome to you, though. Hopefully as you keep playing, you'll be able to naturally phase it out.

Anyway, a few more thoughts about the game after I've put some more time into it: I have to still say this might just be my favorite FPS of all-time. Certainly not the best FPS, all things considered, but in terms of having a great time playing a game, this one has really taken the cake. It's challenging enough, it's FUN as hell, and I'm a sucker for the immersion - it really REALLY adds a lot. This game has me really anticipating what we're going to see once developers start perfecting development for the Wiimote in FPS games...could be great things to come.

I picked up the controls right away and was shooting better with the wiimote then with a mouse. Like everyone said, if this was on another system it would probably suck, but since it has these good controls, it makes it a fun game.

The more I play the more I enjoy this game. I'm playing through the casino/funhouse level and its refreshingly fun and a bit creepy.

I also tried out multiplayer which actually was a good amount of fun. My only gripe is the lack of bots to fill in the empty space and that no music is played during the multi stages, which can lead to awkward silences when everyone is spread apart.

The sword mechanic is pretty neat during multi play. Its just like dashing and slashing in Gunz if any of you are familiar with that game. I certainly look forward to a sequel.

The cam in this game is insanely horrible. Makes the experience pretty damn bad. Bye Red Steel!

I moved my sensor on top of my tv and have gotten more used to not flinging the controller too far to avoid losing control.

I've just finishd the warehouse section and am doing okay. I only have about 15-30% accuracy (ok - only once was it 30%). :)

I do like the game. I wish the controls were cleaned up more, but now that I'm used to it's limitations I'm having fun. :)

As expected, it did take me a while to get use to the controls. However, once I figured them out I've totally enjoyed this. I'm nearing the end of the warehouse area and would so far give the game about an 8.5 out of 10.
I been playing FPS games for a good 8-10 years now, and let me tell you, if Red Steel didn't use the Wiimote, it would be fucking aweful. Since it uses the Wiimote, it is pretty cool as a type of controll style. The controlls are meh in red steel. When I say that I am faced with alot of lag sometimes (also the pointer just moves upward or something which sucks) expecially in the multiplayer where it becomes almost impossible to shoot and throwing grenades is hell in this game because how the hell do I hold the dpad down and launch one with the nunchuck without moving the damn wiimote. Also the zooming in is real well not horrible but hell to work with. Although if they could fix this, this would rule as a FPS machine.

As for the swordfighting, they could of done alot better, but it isn't bad.

Is it worth the $50, well I say no. It is worth $20 or a rental due to crappy multiplayer. The single player isn't too bad, but the controlls are not there yet but it is a decent first try (hopefully they can fix it otherwise this would really suck).
Two points I have found to help you here.

First to throw a grenade you can push down on the D pad and then push B (bottom button) that will give you an overhand throw (non roll) with a grenade. I find that easier than making the motion.

Secondly on the zoom I put my arm behind me then push A and then move the remote forward to my normal position... This allows zoom yet it allows me to be comfortable still.

Just resync the remote... Also go into setup on the Wii and make sure it knows the sensor bar is above the TV now..

The best resync is to turn off the power (15 seconds) turn it on and hold Sync on the Wii until it tells you to push A. Then sync the controllers you have normally. I am betting once you do that and tell the Wii the bar is on top of your set the problem goes away...

I have only had a problem with to far left going right in Excite truck and everytime I have my "wheel" so far left it would go right!

Just got this today and so far am REALLY enjoying it. Is it a great game? Not even close, but I will say i am enjoying it far more than your typical "Avg" game on the PS2 or XBOX.

i canceled my familyvideo preorder of this game after reading the horrible reviews, but it got shipped anyways. i hate hassling with returns so i just popped it in and gave it a whirl. im having lots of fun with it, but with my motion sickness i can't play too long at a time.

It always pissed me off that they used pre defined movements for the sword, Why not let the player have total control and make his own combos? I won't be buying this, possibly a rent since the gun fights look fun.

Can you imagine having to program the colission detection for that? They probably ran out of time.

That's funny because normally during FPS i have HORRIBLE motion sickness. I normally can't even get through 1 level. Timesplitters Future Perfect got me REALLY quickly. On this one i haven't gotten it at all.

Having a major issue with the game. After I beat the fish wherehouse level i get sent back to the bar and cannot select any other mission except that same one. I already passed the level twice and have no other missions to do except the one from the guy that is sitting at the bar on the right- and I can't select that one.

any thoughts?

Well a thought is do you need a certain Respect level to do the mission? I know it mentioned each person and their suggested respect level. I doubt you do but its a thought.

You can check your respect level on the options screen also.

fuck. I doubt this is really anything that someone can help with, but the hangar level just pissed me the hell off. After slowly picking off everyone running around on the ground below me, I found I couldn't use the key pad by the door. Then I found that I was getting shot at by someone; I figure they don't let you go till everyone is dead. Unfortunately this guy was somewhere under me, I think. Maybe in the corner? Regardless, after running around and getting shot at intentionally for 15 minutes to try to figure out where the hell he was coming from, and finding no way to get down to the ground level to confront him directly, I died. Now I get to do it all over again this weekend unless I start Zelda. ARGH!

Thanks for the grenade thing, and once I started to play this more and more I am liking it better and better and getting used to the controlls. I really enjoy the focus mode and I am a respect point whore, but my only real gripe is still only 4 fucking multiplayer maps and trying to get a sword combo to work, but I really am enjoying this more since I got the focus mode. Although I am almost done with the singleplayer but it has been refreshing from most games.

I can honestly say after about 3 hours of play time, I REALLY REALLY like this game. I have figured out the aiming now so it isn't much of a problem and I can say is that this game is really keeping me interested. Anyone else getting the hang of it and finding out they really like it? Red Steel has sold me on buying Call of Duty for the WII.

anyone here have theirs freeze up? i was probably a little more than half way through the geisha mission and when i reached a check point it just froze. i know sometimes it takes awhile to load at certain check points, but i've been letting it sit for a couple minutes now. kinda sucks to have to do that all over again.

You want my CoD?

Yeah I really enjoy RS now. My first time with it had me hating it. I wasn't even going to give it another try. But I did. And then I had a 3rd and 4th go with it. And now I like it.

I'd give the game an 8 or higher in every area, but polish. It's just not that polished. IT's a big flaw, but I've been able to get by that so far. In terms of ambition I'd give the game a 9.5. They really crammed this game full of everything.

The problem is this ambition was too much for a launch game. They should have done a bit less with the game. Cut multiplayer. Shrink the game down a few hours. take off a feature or two. etc.

My first time playing Red Steel was a 4 player game. We decided to just figure out the controls while playing. After 5 minutes or so, everybody was ready to turn the game off.

Since then, I decided to give the game a 2nd chance. I'm about 2 hours into the single player, and it's a lot better than my initial impression.

Things I like:
- Controls much better than a traditional console FPS. I never did like the 2-analog stick setup.
- Sword fights are interesting, and eventually get challenging. There's more depth to these than I had anticipated from the reviews.

Things I dislike:
- Doesn't feel completely fluid. In fact, I think the Monkey Wars minigame from SMB feels smoother (I would pay for a game devoted to Monkey Wars).
- The story is pretty bland IMO. Girlfriend gets kidnapped, go get her! Oh wait, now she's being taken somewhere else. Go there!
- The cutscenes are just bad. I don't mind cutscenes with still photos, but these just seem poorly done/borderline laughable.
- Long loading screens. Not used to these from the gamecube.

I haven't tried CoD3 yet, but Red Steel gives me hope for FPS's on the Wii. Even if this game isn't totally perfect, I know that it can be done. If there does end up being a sequel, I'll probably buy it (maybe after a price drop though).

So, the basic impression is that the learning curve (or at least getting used to the flaws) takes a while, but in the end it's a decent game overall?

Yea, most people will not like this game in their first hour of play. From there people either like it or hate it.

If you never liked console dual analog controls for FPS's , this will be a refreshing experience. Personally, I am never interested in console FPS games, but after Red Steel, I look forward to playing more of the genre on Wii.

What Red Steel ends up being is an alright-good FPS, wrapped in a excellent control scheme in concept (Monkey Wars does it better, i.e. much more responsive). The game itself does have it's moments. The 5 Game's stage is very fun to play through.

I would say its a good game now, but given a year it will pale in comparison with new games that offer a tighter control scheme as well as a great FPS game underneath.

Sidenote: I wish they implemented the sword dash in the main game, it would have integrated the sword and gunplay more.

I received this game from gamesnflix yesterday. I played the first three levels of the game yesterday and I found it to be quite fun. Graphically it's not all the great but I couldn't put down the controls for a couple hours. After gaming with a traditional controller for so long its much different playing a FPS with the wiimote. This game made my arm kind of tired from moving the wiimote everywhere, lol. So far its an enjoyable experience. I don't think I would purchase this game but its definately worth a rental.

So, you're the guy that jumped over me in my Gameznflix queue. YOU BASTARD!

Just kidding.

I have Tony Hawk Downhill Jam on the way from them. I'm looking forward to trying out Red Steel at some point though.

Off topic a bit here:
LOL, I also got trauma center from them the other day.:D Have you noticed they don't have Madden available for rent? Whats up with that? Next up in the queue is excitetruck.

Yeah, I've been checking daily to see if they're going to add Madden at some point. Excite Truck is next in my queue as well. I'll be returning College Hoops 2K7 for the 360 tomorrow... so the race is on as to who gets it first....

Also, doesn't it annoy you that they don't have DS games? What's up with that?

They are by far the cheapest service though, and they have good turn around, so I can't complain too much.

I also have CH 2K7 out, thats funny. I wondered the same thing about DS games. They have psp but not DS which is odd. Isn't the DS more popular than the psp?

They say that DS games aren't compatible with their mailers... which is funny considering that Gamefly uses the same mailers and does rent DS games.

Oh, well. I'm definately interested in looking at Red Steel. (I say this to get the conversation back on topic.)

I just got Red Steel is a trade from a CAG member today. Hopefully I'll tear myself away from Zelda and (GASP!) real work to give it a try tonight.
So, the basic impression is that the learning curve (or at least getting used to the flaws) takes a while, but in the end it's a decent game overall?
You’ve got it daroga; this is game for the long haul, not a pick-up-and-play kinda deal. I’ve been rampantly anti-FPS for years, but I gave this game a chance and found it has its charms. Try and suspend judgment until you get more than a couple of hours into it. It may not be for everyone, but I’d say there’s some fun to be had.
So, the basic impression is that the learning curve (or at least getting used to the flaws) takes a while, but in the end it's a decent game overall?
I think overall it is a pretty good game. I would give it a 7.5. Yes it does take getting used to the controls, but once you do it is a blast to play. I don't think you will ever be able to really shoot with accuracy (i haven't topped 25%) but that doesn't stop me from having fun.

One thing i have started to do though is zoom in and keep it zoomed in while im walking around in certain areas. Makes the aiming easier for me.

Im having a really good time with it though.

So I really love the game. The controls certainly took some getting used to, but now that I am used to them, its fluid and intuitive, almost perfect I would say. I love it.

I just finished the game not too long ago, and I have an 85% completion rating. I have no idea what I missed. I suppose I should go through it all over again, not like I mind. When the music starts going, the game gets really fun.

I really want the soundtrack for this game.

"Icee, very cooool.... Icee, very cooool...."

The one thing i have noticed though is that when you play other games, you can actually feel how much tighter the controls are than they are in Red Steel. If you haven't played the Rail Shooting bits in Rayman, check them out. I know it's different but it is SO much easier to aim. On one hand it is kind of dissapointing that they weren't improved for Red Steel, on the other it shows you in actuallity how great FPS (not that Red Steel is bad by any means) and games have the potential to be on the WII.

PLay Monkey Wars in SMB:BB to see how good fps controls can get. Smoth and steady sweetness.
