Redesigned Nintendo DS!

I love the new design
I MIGHT buy it now. Where as before the system looked to bulky and just "not cool" for me to be carrying :)

im part of that "older" crowd so they have succeeded in getting my attention.
Eh. The changes are purely cosmetic. What does this add to the playability of the system? I was fortunate enough to play with the DS at E3 and I was far from impressed. I commend them for their unique perspective on gaming but this "announcement" doesn't really improve the DS. It's eye candy. Nothing more.
The changes aren't JUST cosmetic. The buttons are bigger, which will make it much more playable.
its nice that they re-did it, but i was going to buy one anyways. animal crossing ds....thats what its all about ^^
EXACTLY! Not to mention Four Swords DS. GOD I can't wait.

Theres gonna be a Four Swords DS?

I'm so there.

And yes, I love this system so much. I was considering getting it before, but the design made me mad. Now, this finalized design is great.

Though, they could have put the power button on the top screen or something, to keep it away from the D-Pad.

IGN is reporting that the likely solution to this problem is that a tap of the power button puts it in sleep mode, and holding it turns it off.

What if you're in a multiplayer game? Im sure it wouldnt just go into sleep mode then, would it?

Looks the same to me, but slightly better. I think I'll wait a year to see which system does better. Nintendo better not do those "connectivity to next-gen. console" gimmik again

I like the new design, it's definitely sleeker than what they showed at E3. Before it looked like two Palm pilots duct taped to one another, now it's like a game and watch. I'm still highly interested, depending on the launch lineup, this may be the top of my xmas wishlist.
I'm relatively happy without an analog stick, although others have said they'd want one. I don't really see the need. With the exception of the GC, which has a shitty digital pad, I use the digital pad when playing games relatively often.

Dang Iand I was just about to where my E3 nintendoDS teeshirt tomarrow, now it's out dated before I even put it on!

Yeah, that's the final design.

I guess it's alright.

I liked the original design better. I just prayed it was slimmed down.

I'm still getting it release day!!
Awesome.

Thanks for filling us in!!
I personally like this new design MUCH more. Nintendo paid attention to the attention PSP was getting for its sleekness, and responded with something much sexier, in my opinion. On a PSP note, I'm still wondering how they are planning on protecting that giant screen. Are they gonna make it clam shell, or release it with a special case, or just expect you to lug it around in a sock?
Sock sounds good to me. I would recommend a crew sock so that if someone tries to attack you, you can WHACK, knock him/her out with the PSP
i think it looks a little bulky for a portable system honestly.
If you are going for bulk look no further than the PSP. Its as big as the Game Gear!!!
eh, I'll wait and see how well games implement the idea of two screens before purchasing one.
Not really, although if everyone did, Gamecube would be #1. Both other systems are bulkified.
Because nothing says "super-cool" like a purple cube with a handle.
^^^ Its the playstation fanboy in you thats doin the talkin

don't forget that it has stereo sound now, the E3 version only had one speaker and the new one has 2. Nintendo also said this may not be the final model, they may make it smaller or change it some way.

No one has seemed to mention the aspect ratio of the screens. It looks to me the new DS is a true 16x9 ratio. Or is it just my imagination?

Great point, man. I didn't even notice that. But wow, that would be great.

Someone is bound to attack you, too, with something that valuable in your pocket. I think I'd spring for the mace attachment.

Regarding the lack of an analog stick, consider this:

I've owned a lot of N64 and GameCube controllers, and after some heavy use, those analog sticks start to wear out. Every play an overused kiosk system at Walmart? The stick is so worn and loose you can't even play correctly. With a console you can just buy a new controller; in this case the console IS the controller and costs a lot more to replace.

For gameplay's sake, I'd rather have an analog stick. But the above point considered, I'm happy it doesn't have one, simply because I won't have to buy a replacement system in 1-2 years.

Edit: Yes, joke all you want about me buying a new DS in 1-2 years anyway when the DS-SP comes out. :p

Just so you know, the DS uses SP screens, and they aren't 4:3 (thus all the SNES ports getting cut and the squished NES emulations). It somewhere in between 16:9 and 4:3 (240 x 160 pixels) so I guess that would be... 3:2 ratio??? :whistle2:k
damn, the DS is just a double sided sp with a dif layout(and better insides) but look at the hinges......EXACTLY like the SP's hinges
Not at all a bad thing, IMO.

wow.. that cool sleek futuristic design looks much better all the better to get it .. oh yea does anyone know if animal crossin on ds will be online? just wondering
I dunno...might be just like if you yawn and pull out your controller in Four Swords on Cube...GAME OVER. But I have faith in Nintendo.
Just got done playing a couple of hours with that game, thats the only thing my friends and me hate about that game. We're always worrying about our batteries running out.

At first I was seeing that too, but I think I figured it out: They significantly trimmed the top and bottom flaps of some length. They looked a bit more square-ish in the original shot because they're sunk into a more vertical base, but in the new model, the sides seem to be pulled out a little more, and the screens are now MUCH closer to the edges of the bases, so it has the effect of making them look more rectangular than before. (But hey, if Nintendo DID in fact enlarge the screens in response to the PSP, I'm not going to complain.)

According to the specs I last saw, the screens are actually _slightly_ larger than the SP's (256 x 192). Still not going to fix the resolution problems with ports, but it's just a bit better.

The redesign is better, I think, and I like that they put in more logical control changes (bigger buttons, changing which side Select and Start are on, a stylus holder), but I was going to buy this thing even if it was just a silver brick like at E3 because, darn it, the prospects of a Wi-Fi compatible Animal Crossing DS makes me happy. :p
Still has nothing on the PSP
Except another screen, a touch screen, a microphone, and 120 games in development, one of which is Animal Crossing. Honest to God, I really hope Nintendo doesn't drop the ball on this. Animal Crossing NEEDS to be a launch title.

Still has nothing on the PSP
Yep, nothing besides better games and innovation...
In a 10 minute span of times, fanboys from all sides come out....

Who cares which'll be better. Sony coming into the market makes Nintendo absolutely NEED to create innovative handheld games, which they haven't exactly done most of time time up to now. I don't think Sony will oust Nintendo out of the #1 spot on the handheld market, but I think it may help change both company's perspectives on how games should be made.

the ds will be mine on launch if i can get the system and 2 games for 260 or less (thats how much i have set aside for it) this is a stupid question and i could figure it out myself if i wanted but htis is easier.... is there wireless internet for games on this thing?

Um...I think everybody with the money for only one of them cares which will be better, don't you think? Fortunately I already know. I'll set it up as a puzzle:

Unscramble the letters to find which handheld system will own your balls:

SD

Get crackin'! :whistle2:D

That'll be plenty enough according to speculation. Japanese retailers are spreading rumors that it is going to be priced and 179, while games are 29-34.

It looks... sleek. Wouldn't really say sexy. Maybe it's just my mind but it looks EXTREMELY wide (big). I bet if its as big as it looks, there will be immense difficulty in trying to fit it in your pocket. But I trust Nintendo in making portable things... and I'm pretty sure they won't screw this up. Just one question for all you cheapasses out there. How come it's so that you would pay an extra (50 or whatever launch price they decide to stick on the tags of the games) for the exact same game that you have lying around in your house waiting to be played? Sure it's got the cool option of PORTABLENESS. Is that what it's all about though? And is that worth 50$? Not IMO...

In response to deadzone^

If you are talking about Animal Crossing, the wireless connectivity will be awesome for visitng eachothers towns and such, and Wi-Fi means you can chop down someone's trees in Iowa, if you've got the right hookups. But if you are talking about PSP games, YEAH! :whistle2:D

Edited to show who I was responding to.

If they added an analog stick where could they put it... It would seriously affect the portablity of this.

Hopefully you can whack the crap outta tree-choppers with your bug net... imagine collecting a bunch of pitfalls, then visiting someone else's town and making it into Animal Crossing's version of a minefield! Pranking other AC players could be so much fun!

haha that would be cool to interact with other animal crossin pplz like *sees another kid with ac ds* hey can i visit your town or something "sure".. then go and have fun trashin =P
If they added an analog stick where could they put it... It would seriously affect the portablity of this.
i think they could put it under the d-pad, and make it like the neogeo analog stick, and then make a little dent in the top screen so it would still fold flat.
