For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

I have 4 oblivion guides and 2 enchanted arms guides available. Roufuss gets 1st dibs on enchanted arms because he asked first and because he's Roufuss.
PM'ed you.

You're a saint ;)

My BB pulls guides ASAP and I lost my contact on the inside there... I love RPG guides and I've been wanting to get Enchanted Arms for awhile so this is perfect!

Weird that the guide for Enchanted Arms is still $9.99 on the website... maybe this is an error?

I really wish Dead Rising would drop, I need a guide for that BADLY.
Agreed Roufuss. Its very odd and I'd kill for a dead rising guide and I don't even have a 360 yet lol.
Wait until you play it, it's like the game was made with a guide in mind... I'm sick of using GameFaq's at this point.

Hell, I'd even buy it at $9.99.

just picked up two enchanted arms guides (one for a fellow cag'er) from two different BB's both came up free and I didn't get hassled. Also if you missed the zelda guide thread they have the hardcover guide for 10 bucks.
Yeap Yeap. All guides mention above is $0.00. Glad i pickup Zelda: LE guide for $4.99 after $5 off coupon ($5 off any Prima Guide found in Fall Codes & Cheats Book expires 12/24/2006). I also pickup TMNT 3 for PS2 for $4.99 after $5 off Game Pro coupon. I scored Tomb Raider Legend, Obivilion and Enchant Arms guide for $0.00. They guy ringup get confused and i told him it's on clearance ........ I paid $10.XX & thanks him

I may comback later today empty all the $0.00 guides, lolz
OK, so Oblivion, Enchanted Arms and TR:Legend are all .01/.00. Is the Zelda guide you got the same as the hardcover version dragonjud was talking about or is it a regular edition? If it's the hardcover, then  ...

EDIT: Never mind, I should have paid more attention to Costanza's post.

Amazing haul for me over lunch today. Picked up Elder Scrolls (x2), Codes and Cheats Fall and Summer, NFS Most Wanted, Enchanted Arms, NCAA Football 07, DOA 4, and Zelda TP guides for a grand total of $5.36!

if anyone gets any extra copies of Enchanted Arms, TR:L, or Oblivion for trade, take a look at my guide trade list, thanks. My store was a bust
got enchanted arms...but oblivion (the old one) rang up $9.99:cry:
did the oblivion guide have a sticker covering the upc code?
got enchanted arms...but oblivion (the old one) rang up $9.99:cry:
Same thing happened to me. Found one copy of the old one, but it rang up $9.99. I sadly didn't notice if it a sticker covering the upc. I passed on the zelda guide since my coupon for $5 off didn't work. I wonder if I could find some coupons that work. I'm still tempted to pick this up.

I have an extra copy of enchanted arms. I wouldn't mind trading that for an oblivion guide if anyone has an extra one of those.

Seems my BB are pulling these from the shelf quicker or someone is grabbing them before i get to the store even though i got there 30 mins after it opened because i could only find 3 Enchanted Arms guides which are nice guides, full color, full size, above average pape count, etc, was really hoping to get more Oblivion because i only have one.

I know for a FACT my store had loads of these on Monday. I haven't been back since, but I'll be disappointed if they were all pulled or sold this soon...the Enchanted Arms guides never moved for months on the rack and for all of them to be gone in the short span of a few days

62t i mentioned earlier in this thread that some of the older guides had the sticker. THe sticker shows the $0.00 price while the original UPC doesnt. I got lucky and had a cashier who sold me em since i found 1 with the sticker. She just scanned the stickered one 5 times.

And exactly why would you need more than 3?

And you need more than one Oblivion guide why? Most people can't even get one!
And exactly why would you need more than 3?
Because he wants to help CAG because 90% of Best Buy's around the world pull these as soon as they open so 90% of CAG's never even get a fair shot?

If it wasn't for CAG's grabbing extra I wouldn't have gotten in on the last 4 Best Buy penny drops.

ill pick up a couple of these at work today(i work at bestbuy hehe) so even if there pulled i just grab them from the back. but last time i checked we had like 15 of the Oblivion guides and about the same for Enchanted Arms also going to pick up the zelda guide. ill probably get like 5 of each. ill only ask for shipping cause i dont need these. pm of you want one :bouncy:

I agree with the logic here. But let's say he keeps one for himself and 2 for trade. In most cases, I'd be more than happy with that...so I wouldn't complain about it.

i have a few extra tomb raider guides if anyone wants them also i tped the upc into the computer (i work at best buy) for oblivion and it came up 10 so i didnt get those and a manager took 3 of my enchanted arms guides and gave me some bs about them and i told him i worked at a different one and told me i was wrong but luckily i had another one hiding so i stil snagged one copy of EA also if anyone could scan either the prima coupon or game pro coupon that would be great

pm if you want a tomb raider guide

Thanks OP, picked up the following guides today all for trade:

Enchanted Arms
Oblivion IV
Tomb Raider Legend
The Godfather (PS2 Version)

Oddly enough, The Godfather guide also rang up for 0.00 instead of 0.01. Not sure if this was a glitch or BB isn't doing the 0.01 prices anymore??
And exactly why would you need more than 3?
Like others have said to trade. Typically alot of stores will pull these off the shelf and destroy em within a day or so of them getting pennied out. So most people like myself grab a few copies to trade for other penny guides we weren't able to get.

Why do i want more than one....derrr...for trading. Fyi, i got into this penny guide deal late, about 3 months ago, but since then i've collected well over a couple hundred guides. I guess i'm just use to getting stacks, i've got well over 50 of each for Halflife 2 Episode One, Mage Knight Apocolypse, The Movies Game Guide and then a few duplicates of others like the Enchanted Arms i got today. I'm just so use to walking out with two or three shopping bags full of guides. However, haven't been trading them as much as i'd like around here (have traded other places) because people want cash and i think it's ridiculous to ask for 10 or 20 bucks for a guide that someone got for ONE CENT. So anyways, if anyone want to do a trade, done one so far on CAG, then PM me. Laterz!

Same thing happened to me with a Godfather guide (up for trade). It had been .01 and it rang up as .00. I wonder if it is BB's attempt at preventing the sale of .01 guides... My usual sure thing BB had pulled the new drops. I hope that doesn't become the trend. However, the BB where I never get guides must have over looked the new drops.

Which Godfather did you get? Is it the one for the Xbox 360 which it should say at the top of the guide?
Which Godfather did you get? Is it the one for the Xbox 360 which it should say at the top of the guide?
Mine was the older one, NOT the newer 360 one.

Darn it! I should check the price for The Godfather (PSP/XBOX360). Oh well, i'll do little shopping later tonite and hope they still have some left ;)

I understand now. As for people wanting money, I don't mind selling a guide, if it makes sense but truly only to help others out. While a penny guide isn't worth anything, shipping is. So, the cost of a single bubble mailer is well over a dollar (at least in NY), and even media mail with delivery confirmation costs 2.50 or more sometimes. So, as long as people are not being ridiculous about it, I don't mind purchasing/selling.

Some folks are not as nice as others about it. And others are downright guide snobs...i.e. 'How dare you sir ask about that guide...why it's the most holy thing in the world, and you're just wrong for asking me to trade it.'
I've gotten a few of those as well.
My collection has grown, and most people are actually nice about them here.

my store only had enchanted arms out on the shelf. :( All I wanted was the Tomb Raider Legend guide. If anyone has an extra, I would gladly pay for the shipping costs.

I went back to the BB where I bought my Zelda Hardcover and looked alittle harder and found the guides. I got Enchanted Arms and Tomb Raider. I have to go back out shopping in a bit (I'm waiting for a delivery from DHL). I'll go back to a couple BB to see if I can find any for those that missed out.

The store I went to had 2 Enchanted Arms left (looked kinda beaten), and 4 Tomb Raiders (1 open, 3 still sealed in plastic wrap).

Does anyone think this is some kind of error on Best Buy's part? The guides, at least Enchanted Arms, is still up for $9.99 and still buyable for $9.99... usually ther is NEVER a discrepency between in store and online.

The fact they are ringing up 0.00 is odd too, and the fact alot of us are finding them means employees probably didn't get any sort of list to pull them.

this could be a new policy to prevent penny guides. Or not as i didnt have any problem getting them ring up zero. in fact the guy think the zelda guide for $10 is a mistake and let the 0.0 guide through w/ no problem.

i went to BB today and I found 3 enchanted arms and 3 Oblivion but only one rang up 0.00 and the rest rang up 9.99. The cashier said the one that came up 0.00 was an error and didn't sell it to me for 0.00.

Honestly can't comment on this since my best buy NEVER pulls guides. This is definitely something to keep our eye on though.

62t is right. I found 3 at my store, 2 rang up for .00 and one rang up for 9.99. I just checked and the two I ended up keeping did have stickers on them, so anyone who finds this in store should look for the sticker on the back.

Edit: ISBN on the .00 guide is 0-7615-5285-5

I decided to do some driving and went to another town about 45mins away and YES i found another 5 Enchanted Arms guides at 0.00 and these were SEALED!!! It's a little harder to pass these by the cashier because when they were a penny, hey, here's a penny for that one, but now that they're 0.00 i feel bad try to walk out of the store without handing over some cash so to keep it cheap i've been bying the WOW 14 day trial for 1.99 with all the guides. Haven't had any problems but of course i always choose a female cashier and i tell her up front that i've heard these are on clearance so when they see the low price they don't trip out.

Found 3 Oblivion guides on the PC guide aisle. Don't forget to check there if you're not able to find these with the console guides.

I picked up the extra 2 for fellow CAGs. PM me if you're interested. Very light wear on each.

Found 2 Enchanted Arms, 1 is up for grabs.

NO OBLIVION though, which is complete bullshit, as my BB NEVER pulls guides, and they were def. at least 15 of them when I was there on Monday.

If anyone has an extra Oblivion, PM me. I'm working on rebuilding my tradelist at the moment, but if it is requested, I can have it ready in an instant.

Thanks all.

Edit: ISBN on the .00 guide is 0-7615-5285-5
The guide that rings up at zero is the T-rated guide, and the one that's still $9.99 is the M-rated guide. Bethesda changed the rating on the game from T to M, and the guides were changed to match, with different ISBN numbers and UPC #'s.

Oh, and found the following for other CAGs to work something out on:
Oblivion - 1 guide
Tomb Raider Legend - 3 guides
Enchanted Arms - 7 guides

Picked up Oblivion, Tomb Raider and Enchanted Arms for trade.

Mainly looking for stuff from the last round of BB penny guides (HL Episode 1, WoW Atlas, etc...) but always willing to check lists and feel free to check my list of older stuff too.
