For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

I'll add it to the wiki, and thanx again for all your help!

no problem to all, and i'm not sure how many other CAGers work at Best Buy, but there was no mention, notice, bulletin, anything about this drop anywhere. I went to my work and all the guides were right out on the shelf, and i for one know my store takes these off shelves before opening. So if anything, if CAGers get out there early enough, there shouldn't be a problem finding the guides from the drop. And with guides such as xenosaga and dirge in the drop, this is a good one.

I just got back from BB and got a bunch of stuff including the FF XII DVD artwork! As for guides...I grabbed just about every one that dropped. And now for the surprise guide not listed...
Oblivion Elder Scrolls IV for PC & Xbox 360 Sku-7748137 & ISBN-0761552855

This is the guide that had the UPC sticker over the actual book barcode. All the other Oblivions are still regular price.

Hopefully this is just BB not pulling penny guides anymore, and letting us have them. drawingboard said they were all retagged .01, and left there for people to buy. I hope this keeps on happening now.

BTW, the BB master list has been updated, too.

OK, then thats the same one that we all got for free back in Dec. My BB was outta those.
I'll re-update the wikis again.
It's a sign, yes, though not one you can bet on 100% of the time.

The normal progression for guides to go down to penny status is they end up at $9.99 one month and gone the next.
Thanks for the information, shrike!

I got my fingers crossed that it will drop soon!

THe FF: XII art thingie is a let-down. No DVD, its just a instruction sized booklet with some character art in there. for a penny, its cool. But if i had to pay the $15.99 or whatever they were charging before, i'd be upset =]

Shit! I was staring at these today on my lunch break, saying to my co-worker "I hope Dirge drops soon...and Xenosaga III..." I grabbed the FFXII artbook by dumb luck, but didn't think to check any guides. Looks like I'm going back tomorrow...

I can probably grab extras, and if so I'll have them up for trade tomorrow.

Any word on Bully or Dead Rising?

Picked up for .01::applause:
Godfather 360/PSP
Enchanted Arms
Superman Returns
Xenosaga III
Tomb Raider Legend
FF DoC

Purchased for $14.99 after GGC::D
Lumines 2
PowerStone Collection
MK: Armageddon

Plus, I purchased more GGC's @ my BB.

Good to see you still around these part my man!!! Just a FYI, someone at my local BB knew about this drop cuz i was in the very same store yesterday price checking a few of these guides that pennied today cuz i noticed they were missing from the website. When i go in today there is almost no guides, i mean like as in none, it was crazy. So someone, maybe higher up, knew and told employees to pull them in between last night and at 10:30am this morning, yeah that's right, i got there 30 mins after it opened and was shot down!!!!! What a lame BB that one is, good thing i got two other around me that i was able to score about 70+ guides today. Best haul in a few months!!!!! Thank you Best Buy, i love you and CAG!!!!!

Originally this waste of a promo was supposed to be given out for free to anybody who bought FF XII from Best Buy, but most stores completely disregaurded it and let them sit out back.

Hey is there any way to look up what a certain BB has in stock, say the Godfather Xbox360 guide, is there any way to check that somehow? I'm sure there probably isn't since these guides have been pulled from the website but maybe there's a backdoor? U there Vahn???? :)

ask someone to check for inventory. Even easier if you have the sku #

LOL I think my local BB's got cleaned out(by me) of ANY copies of the Oblivion guide(the older one with the sticker over the UPC), so I highly doubt either store had any left in stock.

Although, they DO have a copy of the guide SANS upc sticker which I intended to 'hide' behind that lowest shelf in the PC game section that they NEVER use.

Or rather, didn't UNTIL NOW. They moved most of the Warcraft guides down to fill part of the one section of that shelf now. Too bad it happens to be the EXACT section where I flipped a couple regular WOW Atlases behind that shelf and they are now piled in with the REST of them.

So much for trying to be a shady CAGer by hiding guides. :'(

Well yeah but i hate to go all the way down or to CALL (this is the best way to kill a deal is to let employees know about it before you get down there). Was hoping there was a way to check via the internet so that way if something was in stock then i'd know it's worth it to make the trip!!

Yeah, nobody said it was great. But to get quality DVD cases for this price is worth it to me. Same thing with those Tony Hawk Project 8 bonus DVDs that were pennied out a month or so ago. The stuff inside may or may not matter to people. I snagged them solely for the case. Mini-artbooks and whatnot inside are just a bonus. :)

70+ guides...horde much?

You can use the google cashed trick

Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (Signature Series Game Guide) - http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cach...site:www.bestbuy.com&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1

click on the "Select preferred store availability" link under Store pickup and enter in your zip code.

If people are interested I could make a list of all the guides I can find cashed pages for from this drop. I tried and couldn't find one for Xenosaga Episode III.

I wonder if they are hiding guides just to get under your skin IAmTheCheapestGamer :D I noticed that they had Final Fantasy VII DoC & Superman Returns guides in stock at the Wilkes Barre & Dickson City stores acording to the website. Oddly enough the website says my store that opened in August of last year doesn't have the Final Fantasy VII DoC guide which I know they carried, hopefully it's wrong as I was hoping that it would be easy pickings for penny guides (at least for awhile) being a newer store.

Dude, if you can go throw an make a list that would eb awesome...

I'd like to say that this thread has officially gained it mojo back! I noticed that my BB took MANY of the tconsole guides and threw them over next to the PC games in the PC section. So if you guys are coming up short, double check every section! Also, I found some smack down vs raw calendars...Are these pennied. They were in the PC section with the guides. Anyway, I will try to get my list going tonight...I can get pretty much every guide that has dropped (except xenosaga, I plan to keep it)! A big thanks to all of you for the info.

I actually got a call from a friend tonight who was at a bb (down in in socal where he recently moved to) who had some questions on ps3 stuff. I am like, DUDE, go to the guide section, I have some badass news. Told him about all the guides and he was shocked...was a good convo over the phone!

Come on dead rising, the only guide I really need lol!

LOL You mean that new one out by that central PA mall, which has the TRU nearby that I unjammed that 'stuck' WM 21 guide from the rack in, only to get DENIED on? I haven't been out that way in a while, I should go for a raid out there this weekend. Although, by then, you'll probably have cleaned them out.

I'm still kind of shocked that my local TRU seems to be my best source for pennied guides anymore, since all the local EB/GS stores either keep limited guides out or are total assclowns when it comes to giving or selling me something that's their mistake for NOT pulling.

And Neocisco, I USED to be a major hoarder, till all my great sources started pulling their guides QUICK.

Would it be easier to get penny guides at Game Crazy? EB/GS are total assclowns for most people now. How about GC?

Gamecrazy is horrible, from my single experience with them, Eau. Although, there are some CAGs I talk to who have friends in high places in MANY stores who come away with a good haul every time.

Me, on the other hand, I'm lucky if I get a handful of guides anymore. I don't know if it's due to them being more dilligent or if I just come across as 'thats all I'm here for', which admittedly it IS most times.

Hell, to get the XS III guides tonight, it was like pulling teeth. I got the same girl as last month during the Prima sale, who was looking for a manager or something AGAIN tonight. Some people just don't know how the HELL to USE THEIR OWN JUDGEMENT.

LOL Eventually, the newness of getting SO MANY guides for so cheap will wear off once they realize they mostly aren't worth CRAP on Ebay soon after they drop due to other people flooding the market with them.

Well, that and even being stuck with most of their massive trade lists(like I have) because NO ONE wants more than half the damned guides you have.

Hell, most of my unique guides are going out one by one, while the ones I have a dozen or more of(Halo 2/Half Life 2/Battlefield 2,etc) sit and essentially do the same thing they did in the stores: COLLECT DUST!!!!

CMON PEOPLE, I have a shitton of guides to get rid of here, check my lists(they're both the same really).

Guides are hard to get rid off...Why did you not think about this when getting so many? I guess you could give them to CAGS for free..

Actually, I'm still getting a bunch of trade/sale deals from whoring out my TL every couple days by bumping it in the Game Trading Forum.

And AzPunisher, I haven't really grabbed 60+ guides in a while. LOL OK, OK, maybe my 50+ haul from TRU recently was bad enough, but still....I'm NOT as bad as I used to be with the hoarding. :p

I remember coming on here about once every couple days, saying how I went to XYZ store about 60 miles from home and 'SCORED', but NO MORE. Well, save for the very infrequent road trips anymore, but most of those are to check other non local Kmarts. And usually, I'm headed that way for some other good reason anymore, not just 'for the hell of it'. LOL

As for me saying 'check my list', I guess I'm not allowed huh? It looked like everyone else was doing it for a while. But I guess I'm too egregious of an offender to be allowed to keep doing it.

Anyway, rant over and AZ, CHECK MY LIST!!!! LMAO

And ummm, Kevzik, guides.....for free? Whatchoo talkin' bout, Willis? Besides which, I think 4 for $11 is a decent deal, since it's SHIPPED for that price. (exclusions apply to my list though)

Well, of course CAG would be willing to cover the shipping cost for one...All I am saying is that if you have trouble getting rid off them, one to a CAG for a cost of shipping/packaging + .01 :D

You mean like the GT 4 hardcover books no one can find now? Or the Half Life 2 hardcovers? Those are almost too nice to let go for 'free', imo. But hell, the rest of my list is soon to be fair game I think, since most traders/buyers are taking the unique titles and leaving behind the dreck I have 10+ of.

I actually kinda thought the MGS 3 guides would go quick for around $5 per shipped, but I guess everyone got in on that drop. Then again, I also kind of assumed the Halo 2 or Half Life 2 guides would be in more high demand than they have been, but again I was wrong.

Oh well.... if all else fails I could give these to the homeless to keep warm or use as a shelter(if I had even MORE).

You quickly learn with penny guides that more is not better. I only get extras for guides that I know will be high demand (i.e. RPG guides) and even then I'll only get one extra unless I know for sure I can set up a trade for more than that.
As for me saying 'check my list', I guess I'm not allowed huh?
I think my post from last night got deleted (it was even a relevant post w/ some penny drops I don't think anybody had noticed yet) because I put a one-liner at the end encouraging people to check my list. So I guess mentioning something like that even in passing is unacceptable.
majority of the guides are simply worthless. After a while I threw most of them at the recycle bin.
Instead of throwing them away, you could you just give them away to any CAGs in your area or try your local Freecycle group. It's better to give stuff away than to trash it.

Recycling is not trashing...

as for me, a huge haul is less desirable now that Rhino closed down and I cant get .50 apiece for my guides... before them I had a store that gave 2.00 a guide... now nothing
You quickly learn with penny guides that more is not better. I only get extras for guides that I know will be high demand (i.e. RPG guides) and even then I'll only get one extra unless I know for sure I can set up a trade for more than that.
I agree with this. Plus there are lots of other CAGs in the area that may be SOL after you "Clean Out" a store. I typically grab a guide for myself and an extra 1 or 2 guides for trade if it's an RPG or popular game. Otherwise I just grab the one and put it on my TL in the guide trading forum.

I'm rather curious myself what one would do with over 70 guides. Out of the 18 that dropped, that would be about 4 of each. I only grab 2 of each (1 for me, and 1 to trade), unless I already know people that could use one, then I grab that amount more. The only guide in this drop I went overboard with was the Xenosaga guide, since everybody seems to want that one.
What does this FFXII artbook look like? I have only seen the regular FFXII guide at my BB.
It's in a DVD-sized case, usually on the shelf above the FFXII game. 10-12 page artbook inside of it. From previous comments, it's nothing that thrilling, though it's a penny, so that changes it appeal a little bit. From vahn's comments, it was a giveaway with a purchase of FFXII, though appears to be pennied out now.

Thanks, I will look for it tonight. BTW I finally got some more guides last night. My BB has been pulling them very fast for months, but there were plenty last night. I need to update my list, but I got 1 or 2 of almost all of the new drops.

Ok now nobody has answered my question as to if a guide like say The Godfather was taken off the website is there any way via the internet to check in stock availability at my local Best Buy.

As to the whiners who are having a fit over me grabbing 70+ guides yesterday. I grab as many as I can because I am a true collector. I have close to 500-600 guides and i grab extras cuz i keep one on the shelf for display, one for use when i play the game, one or two for storage, and then the rest are for trade or gifts for friends (one of my friends is constantly bumming guides off me cuz he's "gonna" download a pirated copy off the internet, lol but all cool cuz i got em for a penny so no biggie).

Now i've tried to do some trading of guides around here but i've been shot down trying to get the guides i'm missing.....Wow Atlas w/bookmarks, City of Heros/Villians Binders, etc. So i've kinda given up trading lately on CAG but now with this new haul i WILL BE posting a TL in a couple weeks when i'm not so busy because i've had a few requests to trade and to answer a couple of those request.....YES I DO HAVE MULTIPLE COPIES OF EVERY GUIDE THAT DROPPED AT BB except one but i saw that one at one of my stores so i'll be going back to pick it up today!

Lastly i wanted to say that please don't throw these in the recycle bin, that is such a waste, ask on CAG and i'm sure someone here would be willing to pay shipping costs to have guides sent to them. I've traded alot of guide independently and if you ship a guide via USPS Media Mail then it runs only $1.50-$2.00 max to mail it. Most CAGs would be willing to send that to you Paypal or to send a guide in return. If nobody wants them then at the VERY LEAST give them to Goodwill or some low income place so they don't end up going to the dump. Part of the reason i grab as many as i can is i HATE to know that some of these are going in the trash, what a waste!!!!

p.s. btw i didn't just goto a store and walk up to the counter with 35 guides, first i walked up with 10 or 11 guides of one or two copies of each and picked my favorite cashier, a damn hot blonde, and told her that these are on clearance. Then i came back a few hours later and filled TWO HAND BASKETS with 34 guides and went to the same cashier. She was like, "what do u do with these, sell them to people at full price", i was like,"NO i trade them to others that get them at a penny also", so them i'm like,"so is Best Buy working you hard" and then she's like,"No but you are right now", so i'm like," Yeah i like to work my woman hard" and then she's like,"here's my number".....no wait, the last line didn't happen, i wish it did!!!

You might want to think about laying off the sugar and/ or caffeine.

No matter how you try to justify it you're still taking away oppotunities from other CAG's in your area to get the guides. 70 guides in a matter of hours is selfish hoarding, no way around it.

I grab as many as I can because I am a true collector. I have close to 500-600 guides and i grab extras cuz i keep one on the shelf for display, one for use when i play the game, one or two for storage, and then the rest are for trade or gifts for friends
So you need 3-4 guides just for yourself? Because you're a "collector"? To be completely blunt, you're full of crap. Now, if you're were to go back a week later and they were still there they would be fair game. Try thinking about other people in your area and give them a chance to get some guides. Myself, I take a maximum of 3 guides and that's only if I want one for myself. The other 2 will be for trade. Some guides, IMO, aren't even worth picking up for trading purposes (sports, PC, a few others). You'll soon come to realize, like dopa and jgamezcua said (BTW, they're both great traders), that most of these guides become completely worthless very quickly. Do yourself and other CAG's in your area a favor and limit yourself.
I've never been denied buying a penny guide because i follow a few simple steps;

1) pick your cashier wisely, a female preferred, hopefully hot, someone who doesn't seem to like their job to much
2) always say before they ring up the item,"hey i wanted to check the price on this and see if it is on clearance", after doing this i've only had one person EVER ask why it was ringing up for a penny, with that person i just repeated that they go on clearance sometimes
3) if they give you a hassle then be cool and walk away, otherwise you will ruin it for everyone else and especially yourself
4) DON'T BE SUCH A GREEDY BASTARD, yeah that's right, don't try to walk up there with a stack of 50 guides, try to be conservative and bring a max of 4 or 5 of each guide, after making a successful purchase have your friend (you did bring a friend with you right?, derr, always have a friend who can grab a stack too) go back in and buy the rest of them but make sure he goes to the same cashier that you did so that person will already know they are a pennya nd won't trip out
5) Lastly spread some good karma around and trade with your fellow CAG members, i don't know what it is about you all here but alot of you are asking cash money for these guides, just do a trade and be cool, i've given up on it for now because i spent weeks and weeks asking for trades and only found one person that was willing, which is kinda lame, i mean geez, remember you got this info on this board so help out us other board members, for instance i didn't get any of the last drops from TRU, i'd die to have Halo 2 or Quake 4. Anyways, hope this advice helps, laterz
So, how's that step 4 working out for you Zodemere?
