Hey all. Thanks for taking a look at this thread. I'm going to be participating in the Relay for Life event help by the American Cancer Society. For those who don't know, this event helps raise money for cancer research. The event is on April 1st at UC Davis starting at 10:00am. Our team is to walk on a track for a full 24hrs in honor or in memory of those who have been touched by cancer. and we try to get donations from friends, family, companies and in this case some CAGers. I know it's sometimes hard to give up a little cash but this is for a good cause. If you can not give up a bit of money please tell others so that they may participate. By the way I'm on the UC Davis Red Cross team so if there are any fellow Davis students who wouldl like to join the team just pm me or something. Well thanks for reading. Actually I'm thinking of participating (on a different branch of course) this year, though I'm still thinking. I've heard cool things about it.

The best way is to do a lot of footwork. When some of my local high schools back at home put on Relay For Life events and all of that they usually end up with donations at the end of the weekend that put most major universities to shame. Howso? Well, it helps to be in a district that contributes greatly for one, but the other major factor is that everyone goes around to as many local businesses, both independent stores and large chains, and tries to convince them to make contributions to teams or offer up prizes for raffles in return for recognition of sponsorship and things like that.

Back at home it worked quite well. It also helps to try walking around your neighborhood and talking to people and families you know about this as well. Most families have had experience with cancer in their own homes or with friends and such and are willing to donate. One of the biggest events we had was a lighting ceremony where people would donate a few dollars for a bag for either a cancer survivor or someone who lost their life to cancer. The person's name would be put on the bag, would be weighed down with sand, receive a candle, and would be placed on the track field. Considering so many people donated for these bags/candles that it filled up the entire track as well as the bleachers, I think it was quite popular. People would then go around lighting their dedicated bags during a special lighting ceremony. It's quite a sight, very touching.

you should do it. its really fun. especially if you go with lik 20 friends. you wont regret it.

Thats actually done through the American Cancer Society. They're called Luminarias. These would be lighted through the night of the Relay for Life event. Its a 5 dollar donation for one of these. If anyone would like me to buy a candle for them in honor or in memory of someone just let me know.

Me and some friends have a tv show weekly on the local public access channel, we had 3 girls doing relay for life come on a few weeks ago to get their word out. If you have a public access station nearby, you should see if you could come on one of the popular shows and get the word out.
 
the event is coming up pretty soon and I still need to get a few more donations. so far I've only got support from 1 CAG. please help.

You need a Monterey donation? I will help if you do. I can't give a lot but nonetheless a little help is good...no?
