Removing Shapie from Nintendo (SNES/N64)

walterdude

CAGiversary!
I'm having a hard time removing sharpie from nintendo cartilages...

I've tried

Going over it with a dry erase marker
Lighter fluid
Alcohol
Water
Rubbing til my finger hurts
Toothpaste

Please help me. I hate having freakin sharpie stains!

I usually use Goo Gone, but it doesn't always work. We used to get something in at work called Goof Off that worked great on our shelves, but I've never found it for sale so I haven't tried it on a cart.

Fingernail polish remover works too, but BE CAREFUL- you can discolor the cart, especially with a high acetone remover. Oiling the cart immedately (I use a vitamin D skin oil) helps offset that factor, but it doesn't always help and usually requires many, many reapplications over the next couple days. It's a last resort.

I'm going to have to try that toothbrush thing, looks easy...

Goof Off (you can get it at Home Depot) or mineral spirits are the best things to use, just make sure you use it on a paper towel or q-tip (don't apply directly to the cart) and wipe it with a clean cloth afterwards.
You could also use a Vis-a-vis marker, that has worked for me in the past (better than a dry erase.)

As mentioned in the previous post, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is the best thing. It works incredibly well and will not discolor or damage your cart.

It works fantastically. It even takes care of those horrible Blockbuster security stickers. I wouldn't get it near the label, though. Every time I bought a game I'd put a couple drops on the price tag and the ink would vanish instantly. It shines up dull cases really well, too.

I purchased a graphics calculator on eBay. It had the persons name written on the back with a sharpie. I tried hand sanitizer, regular soap, and goo gone...didn't work. So, I went to my Dad's garage, and I just started playing with one of his spray stuff for his car. The car stain remover worked.

If you rub hard enough with a magic eraser it will (for lack of a better term) sand plastic, for example if you have marker on an NES cart that was written on a long time ago and is tough to get out you will smooth out the textured pattern on the plastic if you rub with enough presure with the magic eraser for awhile.

Another vote for Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (and Goo Gone). Most of the time they will take sharpie off with little pressure. Although it seems that sometimes it won't take off the sharpie without using enough force to "sand" down the texture of the cartridge. It isn't too noticeable, unless you point a light on the cartridge and notice a small segment isn't as reflective as the rest.
