Request:Cheap Bass Guitar Starter Set

My son had his birthday yesterday and wants to learn how to play the bass guitar and I want to try and find him a cheapest startup set possible. I would like the set to come with the guitar, amp, and maybe a bag or stand. I tried price grabber and I did not really come up with any good hits.

I'm not sure about the amp, but the quality of the basses themselves are on par with MIM Fenders. I had an excellent experience with a Jazz copy, and you can check the Megathread on talkbass.com for more info - its about 300 pages long now, and just about all positive comments.

However, there is this: http://www.rondomusic.net/vebltd.html but its a bit expensive, but you do get a HSC...but no amp. You won't find a quilted maple top for this price anywhere else though...
 
when i started playing years and years ago, i wanted to play bass. my dad said "just learn guitar" and since he was the one paying at the time, i got a guitar. i can now play guitar very well and because of the stuff i know on guitar, i can play bass as well. see if your son is willing to play guitar first, it's a better place to start and he won't have to "catch up" later if he wants to play guitar.
 
I don't agree with that statement - usually guitarists who play bass just play it like its just a lower range guitar and miss a complete aspect of the instrument.

Then again, its just me - IMO theres more in playing bass than just playing root.

theyre completely different intsruments.
you can use that thinking by saying learn the piano first if he wants to play guitar later itll be easier.

just make sure the kid isnt picking bass because he thinks its easier, he'll probably loose interest if thats the case.

and i second guitar center, i really like that place and they have GREAT prices. they even sell used stuff.
 
I've been playing bass for 13 years, guitar for 9. I tried guitar first, and they are in no way similar. I agree with the above poster, bassists who play guitar first almost always play it like a second rate guitar. The dynamic of the instrument, how it's played, even how it's held are totally different. I taught myself bass first, and it gave me an entirely different perspective when I taught myself guitar (this is the way to go). I would also suggest Guitar Center. You can grab an Ibanez starter pack (Bass, amp, strap, case, picks etc.) for around $250. I've played on Ibanez basses for years and will not go back, they make awesome basses. You may also come across a Squire (Fender) pack and possibly a Yamaha. IMHO, these are good, but do not have the quality/value ratio that Ibanez does. Compare prices, accessories and lemme know if you have any questions.

kinda silly but for younger people ibanez feel better as the necks are usually slimmer, i know it did to me.
 
Yeah, Ibanez's are good, but my personal recommendation would be to hit up Ebay on a SR800 if you want an Ibby - they're ridiculously cheap for the quality, and the preamp is quite versitile.
