Request: External Hard Drive

Relentless355

CAGiversary!
I'm looking for an external hard drive, preferably one 500 GB. I don't know very much about them, like the best brand or FireWire or anything like that, so some help would be appreciated. :)

Currently, I'm looking at two different 500 GB hard drives on Amazon for around ~$125 each. The price is right, but I'd rather pay more if it means not having to worry about all those horror stories of losing everything on your external HD.

The products in question:

So, yeah. Also anyone's experience with external HDs, if they are reliable or just slow and bad. Help is appreciated. ;)

best advice if you're worried about losing data: buy two and have one automatically backup the other one during the night.

If you want to go to the cool and very expensive route you could get a drobo: http://www.drobo.com/

I would suggest buying a good quality hard drive (Western Digital or Seagate) and a good external case instead of the prefitted setups that you mentioned. Try pricewatch.com.

Oh and Firewire is faster than USB but USB is more accepted. That pretty much breaks down that argument.

From what I read on slickdeals, BB seems to have some of them on clearance. They may not be 500 GB, but they are sure much cheaper.

get a 400 gb Cavalry on sale from buy.com. I picked up mine at 69 shipped and it works perfectly. There was a rebate but who cares. At that price buying two will be cheaper than on the the drives you have shown above :)

Seagate brands come wiht 5 year warranties.
This is the reason i went with this brand over any other brand . Most are 1-2yrs.

The 1TB for $89.99 if you read the post is Best Buy YMMV crap (price glitch). Didn't bother to check the others though.

Did notice in today's Frys ad - Acom Data 500GB Hybriddrive usb 2.0 7200RPM for 109.99. ($149.99 regular price, good til tues, Oct 16) I actually was thinking of heading to my Frys to check it out maybe. HD's are getting cheap enough I personally won't pay more than 25 cents per GB.

NM on the Fry's ad. Researching it, the hybriddrive got nasty reviews.
