Resident Evil 4: Gamecube or PS2?

OK, I'm sure this has been asked a million times before but I need some definitive answers! Are there any real differences between the two or does this sum it up? I'm leaning towards the PS2 version because I have a 16:9 TV and the game comes with about 5 hours of extra content.

Gamecube:

Pros:
- game originally designed for the system
- better graphics
- cheaper

Cons:
- 4:3 letterbox only
- less content/shorter

Playstation 2

Pros:
- 16:9 true widescreen
- more content/longer

Cons:
- worse graphics
- more expensive
 
I\'d say the PS2 version, the extras are definatley worth it IMO, and you won\\\'t notice the graphic differences, I didn\'t even though I have played the GC version to death. Plus, if you can get the LE case for it, then all the better. The PS2 LE case is the best LE case IMO.
 
I believe they are both the same price most places (39.99). I guess if you're going Used, you may find the GC version cheaper. $30 AC @ BB ain't bad.

I've played both....finished the GC version and currently in the middle of the PS2 version (somewhere in the castle). I haven't noticed any real differences yet, but I'm not on a widescreen tv or anything. And I haven't seen the new content yet, whatever it is.

That's good to hear. I'd be playing it on a 16:9 screen so if I could avoid the black bars on the side I'd like to but if the PS2 version is drastically inferior then I'd rather play the better version...
 
i'd go with the gamecube version, supposably the controls are better using a gamecube controller, then using a PS2 controller.
 
Gamecube, I have played both and owned the GC version since it came out. The GCN controls are better the cutscenes are real time. I do notice a graphical differnce, its slight however it's their. It's just so much better on the GCN.
 
I suggest whatever is more important to you, Graphics (GC version) or extra content (PS2 version). But, I own the GC version since it came out for that first. Great game, I'm considering purchasing it for the PS2 to see the extra content.

If that's the case, you can use your TV's zoom feature to digitally zoom in so you can play in 'fake' 16:9 ratio. Doesn't look as sharp as real widescreen output but it still looks damn good (run it using component cables with a TV at 480p resolution if you can for the best picture).

As for the graphics, the GC version DOES look better. That's not to say the PS2 version looks bad but there is a difference. Here's a comparison (56K warning!):

Personally, I've played both and think the GC version is better. The graphics weren't the deciding factor, it was the controls... something about using the PS2's controls- it feels loose and goofy compared to the tight controls of the GC version. The 'Separate Ways' mode is nice but it's not much different than Leon's quest, minue a 2 new bosses and a few new areas. Trust in that the GC version can easily keep you buy for a while.

I'd easily pick the GC version over the PS2 version anyday.:)
 
Gamecube, if solely on the grounds that you shouldnt be supporting Capcoms PS2 decisions. Unless you can find it used, which doesnt support them anyway.

For it to be used would mean someone has traded it in. So, most likely, Capcom was supported already. ;)
 
Can someone explain the widescreen situation on the GC?:
Can you play the GC version in nonletterbox format (that is, true 4:3 aspect ratio)? Is there any difference in the aspect ratio when playing in progressive scan versus nonproscan?

Wow, I had no idea the PS2 version was so much blurrier than the GC version. Also, the GC version seems to have much better draw distance.
 
Does the letterboxing of the GC make that much of a difference? In other words, if I use the zoom function to size it to widescreen, does it look worse than the PS2 version that is sized for widescreen (using stretch) (in progressive scan mode of course)? Any opinions?
 
PS2 simply because it has true widescreen and from your situation you want this game to look good on your tv.

Overall the GC feels more solid than the PS2 version (controls, graphics) however I am a sucker for extra content. :lol:

It was $30 at EB/GS during Black Friday weekend, but went back up afterwards.
 
Mixed bag for me here. The graphics overall look better on the Gamecube but however the PS2 has true 16:9 support. If the Gamecube could be played in a true 16:9 mode then I would prefer that. Oh well.
 
i have played through and beaten the cube version twice. Seems more fun the second time around with the loaded weapons you had from the first run :p, and given the fact that you should have/made enough cash to buy a rocket launcher to kill the bosses with one hit, then it should be easier.. the first time it took me 20 hrs or so to beat, the second time 10hrs.

Bought the ps2 version when I got my ps2 on black friday..guess what? if you've played the game cube version, prepair for a sound downgrade and looser controls then the cube version on the ps2. Graphically, everything on the ps2 version looks muggyer :\ just be ready for that. oh and also, even on easy, be prepaired for LESS AMMO on your first run. being spoiled on the cube version really hurt me on my ps2 run, so make sure your hits count, and if you can run away, go for it.

i'd say rent both if you can and try which one fits you best.

the only thing i got the ps2 version was for the extra missions(SW) and the funky new outfits for the second run.
 
I've played both, and I tell you this:
(a) I didn't think the extra content was all that, and
(b) The PS2 controls just made me FURIOUS.
I was Not Having Fun with the funnest game of the year. It was startling. So my vote is definitely Gamecube.
 
I wonder if those who are touting true 16:9 support realize that it doesn't even begin to compensate for other losses?

wow, thanks for that link. I'd been wondering just how dif the graphics are. All in all, I'm actually impressed it looks as good as it does on PS2. It's a little bit muddy, and there are definitely some details and environmental objects missing, but nothing that I think I would have noticed without a side by side comparison. Despite how much I want a new game for my 'cube, I think the extra content makes the PS2 purchase more worth it. The graphics DO look better on GCN, but not so much that I would take them over extra gameplay.


Oh, and a question to those that have played it. I SUCK at RE games, and have actually only beaten RE2. I love the puzzle solving and exploration, but I hate conserving ammo and limited saves. Now that RE4 is a little more action oriented, do you guys think I'd be able to play this one better?

This is my big hang-up. If the PS2 version didn't support this I'd go with the GCN versio easily. I'm a sucker for widescreen though...
 
Can someone please clarify the widescreen situation on the Cube?

Does the GC version play in true 4:3 or only fake widescreen? (and does the answer change if we are talking progressive scan mode?)
 
I don't see the big deal about it not being in widescreen, the whole advantage to seeing something in widescreen is the fact that you are seeing the whole picture. But even on the cube 4:3 version you actually are seeing the whole picture. Wow there maybe some black bars on the side... strecth it or deal with it. If you play the PS2 even in widescreen you are actually missing out on a lot when it comes to the picture anyways.

You truly aren't missing out that much (graphically) if you are playing the PS2 version. I have played both, and you won't notice a difference unless you compare them side by side.

The extra's are fun, true widescreen is cool, and its still a damn awesome game. If you are a graphics whore go for the GC version...if not then probably the PS2 version for all the extras.
 
gamecube RE4 is 19.99 brand new at gamecrazy. $14.99 used.

The PS2 one is still $49.99 for LE and $39.99 for regular. Good luck finding one used.

That would be enough of a deciding factor for me. You're paying $20-35 for that ada campaign.
