So now that we've had time with the game what ya'll think?

My initial impressions of the game were severely lacking since the original announcement. When I got the game I played it CO-op with my friend and everything looked like ass and felt like ass. There was no presentation value and my head started to hurt.

However the next day I decided to try it alone in it's full cinematic value on single player and it was 100 times better. The graphics improve and you have the full screen to play. I'd have to say that the CO-OP felt like it was just tacked on (but I guess at least they included it). But yeah everything got gradually better all the way up to the first boss fight (first boss looks pretty neat). And as you get more weapons the game really gets better. Of course since it's from the ratchet and clank people the weapons are really neat =).

I played one online match and it really reminded me of Unreal Tournament 2004. Good fun stuff and runs relatively smoothly.

So what do you guys think of the game so far?
 
I thought it was going to be a generic fps with aliens, but insomniac's proved me wrong (never played R&C games, but wanted to). So far the pacing of the story is pretty decent, the game play requires to you think a bit and not charge all gung ho.

so far so good, haven't tried multi yet.
 
Total letdown. The weapons other than the Bulleye and the other rifle you start with are basically worthless. The story is just one giant flashback with no meat to it. After about halfway into the game, I just got bored with it but I forced myself to finish the thing.

The environments all look the same so that you can't tell if you're in London or Nottingham. Nothing ever truly catches your attention and makes you go 'Holy Sweet Goddamn!'. Nothing at all. Just from watching the videos of GOW, I was more entertained that playing this game from start to finish.

Eh? I found the other rifles fun to use, especially the auger rifle. Most of the weapons had thier proper usage in situations.

As for the environments, the only problem I had was with the underground section, but I found the levels adequately varried. It just had a similar color pallete. I found it no less diverse than Gears of War.

The vehicle action in this game with the jeep was suprisingly fun. Driving through the plains was great sucess ;). I was suprised since I expected it to be halfassed like the vehicles in the Outfit. It certainly doesn't have vehicles flipping over though, but it controls a little like ridge racer which was quite fun.

As I play through the game more it is actually more fun than I initially anticipated.
 
It got slightly better the more I played....... but it's got a long way to go before I consider it worthy of buying a PS3 over.


I'll finish it and see what I think.
 
Well I like it.

One of the points that has been touched in in various reviews is the lack of "need" to use more then a few guns. Nothing wrong with that if you ask me, I used only one or two when I played HL2. I think it is seems to be such a problem here because there are so many uses for the guns here. I too have found myself saying "Cool it does this too.. but I hardly get to use that fuction!"

You'll use the other weapons and alt fires in multiplayer more though. Using the C's rage mode to see enemies though walls and then blasting them through their cover is a lot of fun.
 
Just got off a bit of multiplayer. That Church level is quite fun with 40 players. I didn't find out about rage mode until a second ago haha, I'm not even quite sure how I activated it. What do the humans get to counter that?

The biggest flaw I see right now is that I don't get to use a keyboard and mouse. Lets face it folks, the PS3 controller is not well suited for FPS'. I constantly was wishing to myself I could just plug in my xbox 360 controller ;). Of course the Keyboard and Mouse combo would be the ultimate for me. I found sniping with the ps2 controller quite difficult.

The bullseye is alot of fun to use in multiplayer though.

To balance it out, the rage mode needs to be cut off and cooled down or it will drain your life. To activate it, tap L2.

Humans get to see enemies on the radar (though it can be turned off on the custom game settings for some odd reason), can crouch to avoid fire/hide from radar detection (when playing other humans), and get unlimited run without needing to cool down.
 
I SUCK SO MUCH PLAYING FPS WITH CONTROLLER because I can't aim for crap... Is there any practice tips that I can learn from? Help me pleasee~~

why not hook up a mouse and keyboard?
 
The single player experience makes Gears of War look that much better. It just seems to lack a great deal of the finesse that a solid FPS should have (to be fair, I rarely play shooters, so I haven't played the Call of Duty games to use them as a reference point).

GameFly is sending out CoD3 for PS3 this week, so I'll be able to compare it to something else. Truth be told, I could just be frustrated waiting for my HDMI cables to arrive, since there' a touch of ghosting with my $5 third party PS2 component cables I'm using in the meantime.

Haven't tried online yet, but hope to soon.

I've found the numbers of people playing now to be pretty plentiful. I jumped in a game at 11 pm with 40 people, there were about 4 40 people game running at least with a whole ton of 16 player ones.

My biggest gripe is still with the damn ps3 controller heh. I cant snipe anything with that!

Yes yes.... we get it. Gears of War is "Godly".

And "finesse" and FPS RARELY mix. A lot are just- go here shoot, shoot, move here shoot. Nice you can pick maybe one game out of hundreds to say it doesn't do that but again this game isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. It does everything that prior FPS (not counting GoW mind you) did at least the same or better in some cases.

Again I say it isn't fair to compair it to Gears of War because they both are trying to do different things. I think it R:FoM is more along the lines of Fear, Half-Life 2, Prey, or Quake 4. You've got your story, and you've got your action. How much you enjoy the game depends on how much you get into the story and your need to shoot stuff up. Thats a problem for some, but for others it works fine.

I like the story/rewriting of history (though it isn't a new idea). And the slight mystery of why your soilder is so good at what he does, what has happened to him and so on is very interesting to me and will add to the life of the game.

Not to mention multiplayer is fantastic. Only negative I've seen so far is that the spawn points are in some odd places. Like when you think you've got a roomed sealed off on a certain map, the game will spawn an enemy right behind you.

Two FPS games are not, IMO. If you want to discount my opinion because I'm not gushing over Resistance, that's fine by me. Still my opinion.

I'd argue that the "go here, shoot, go here, shoot" mentality is not what makes a good shooter, because you're then taking the strategy and skill out of it - much like the sword-thing in Halo 2. You don't have to be good to take someone out with it...just go here and 'shoot.' I think that's the reason people tend to dislike it: because it rewards people with no skill in the game, save for their suicidal approach to the game.

As I've said, I don't play many FPS games. You may be right, and I have little experience to say "this game is like this, so I disagree with you." I just think that, after two weeks of Gears of War, Resistance just doesn't measure up. Perhaps when I play some more of it (and don't forget that I said I hadn't tried online yet) I'll have a different perspective.

In the meantime, you go enjoy the game, as you clearly do.

No your... I'm... we're on the same page... I think. :)

I'm saying... that GoW takes more strategy and tactical play in certain areas, were as R:FoM and the other games I mentioned you basically get action broken up by story here and there.

In GoW you have to hid behind stuff and avoid fire and think of different ways to attack while in R:FoM I've found myself just running out into the middle of the area and blasting anything that moved which I basically did in Prey and the others. Fear too kind of forced you not to rush into things.

I'm just saying that within the FPS genre you can break up titles even further into groups like "run and gun" and that the two games don't belong together like that.

Well I Just tried to play resistance with a USB Keyboard and mouse and it's a No-Go. I even tried it with a 4 port USB hub to have everything on the 1st USB port but came to no Avail. Damnit.

Can anyone prove me wrong....PLEASE?!?!?! That control is too funky for me.

BUt you can use your keyboard and mouse on your PS3 for internet browsing tho.

If the game doesn't state that using a keyboard/mouse is supported then it won't work.
 
yeah, I wish keyboard and mouse would work. I don't think Console devs will be doing that anytime soon though, because they want to create a level playing field for Online multiplayer. And any hardcore FPS person knows that on average with keyboard and mouse combo your Aim is MUCH better. I just Wish Sony modified the left analog to be switched with the left dpad. Granted I prefer the Sony controller for 2d fighting games, but the Xbox 360 pad is king for console FPS'
 
Well , I've gotten around to playing this game and so far I like it. I'm a sucker for FPS.

Just got off from playing online and had a blast even though I sucked. LOL

Anyone here that wants to play online feel free to add me to your friends list.
 
Man, this game is getting pretty hard on normal in the later levels. Can't run and gun at all heh. Some of these parts could have used more checkpoints too.
 
started playing this game again since I beat rainbow six. Man these checkpoint placements are really pissing me off towards this end. Has anyone found these later levels to be particularly difficult? I'm having to replay stuff way too often.

Yeah, I died a ton of times towards the end of the game as well, I really wish they would have placed more checkpoints.

doesn't help that my controller is desyncing more often now due to the introduction of my logitech speakers with wireless rear sats. gahhhh

In terms of graphics, GoW seems way too monochromatic -- almost like it's in black & white with only flashes of real color. And I suppose the familiarity of Resistance's control scheme makes it seem more comfortable.

It is true that they are VERY different games. Strictly speaking, they aren't even the same genre, since Resistance is mostly a traditional first-person shooter, while GoW is a third-person shooter. Resistance is a run-and-gun shooter, where you can often get away with jumping right into a firefight with guns blazing. GoW is a stop-and-pop shooter, where cover is much more important and you only come out of cover for a second or two to shoot.

my fustration lies in the checkpoints. Gears and Halo 1 & 2 had very well placed checkpoints. Resistance seems to be missing a few in many areas and having some where they shouldn't belong.

I experienced this in Rainbow Six Vegas as well, but with resistance it's much more fustrating.
 
I like it so far.
Its exactly what i expected.
The multiplayer has been way better then i expected.
I havent had ANY lag at all so far. Which is amazing.

Hey everyone, we've been hard at work here at Insomniac on improving the game, we've decided to let you in on some of the upcoming improvements! They're coming in two forms: a server-side update for ranked games, and a downloadable client-side update. Here's some of the things we'll be changing:
Server-side (ranked game) update:
* Map size determined by the number of players in the game
* All maps available for ranked games
* Score limits for team deathmatch adjusted based on the number of players in a match
* Time limits added for all game types that were missing them

Client-side (downloadable) update:
* Added a game option to allow "map voting", which will allow players in a custom game to vote on a new map from the results screen
* Expanded tactical element of squads. In objective based team games (CTF, Meltdown, Breach), players will be able to select to spawn near their squad as well as all the previously available spawn points. Additionally, squad members will be displayed different on the map/radar so that you will be able to find them easier
* We've been busy refining the balance between the Chimera and the Humans in order to make both races more fun to play, and to give players improved tactical options (you'll have to wait on the specifics)
* We've improved the spawning algorithm to prioritize spawn points that are away from enemies and near teammates and squadmates
* Wins/Losses are now displayed on the character sheet
* We have replaced the Skeleton skin with a new skin, the Mechanic. We've determined that the Skeleton is much smaller and more difficult to see on many levels than any of the other skins. The skins were never meant to give a gameplay advantage, but to offer you the chance to customize your character as you see fit, and we don't want people to be at a disadvantage because they didn't pick any one particular skin. Never fear, the skeleton may make a return at some later date, in some form or other.
 
Not sure if I'm near the end of the game (I'm fighting on the rooftops in London), but the game is starting to get really hard. The part I just finished took me five or six tries to beat--there were just so many Chimera, big and small, closing in from all sides. It was really intense and fun, though.

I think I prefer this game, in single player, to Gears. I just really dislike this style of game in multiplayer though. I'd much rather play the tighter, more tense, 4-on-4 matchups in Gears.

I was required to take more cover in Resitance than I was in Gears of War. Were you playing on easy?

The game is hard. And it is really well made. I enjoy the games single player alot more then Gears of War. Resistance's single-player felt more full and polished, Gears seemed to short and didnt have as much variety.

I think thats partly due to the fact the variets of vehicles and weapons you'll be using in Resistance.

I was really amazed how good Resistance was. I was EXTREMELY frusturated at the end, but it was so satisfying to beat it. And the twist at the end of the game was really exciting.

The game also had the most "AHH! WTF!" moments. I got scared more times in this game then I have ever had in any other game. Mostly due to those head crab, crazy creature things jumping out all the time.

The game is very solid and very addicting once you get half way through. I to had the problem of not being able to get into it, but once I got through alot of it, I was hooked.

Lots of fun.

i'm around there too, it's getting pretty damn hard indeed, even fustratingly so which sucks. To make matters worse the checkpoints are too few in between and the ones that are close to each other are horribly placed. It's kind of left a bad taste in my mouth and i've decided to put the game on hold for a bit. I mean I even went ahead and beat Genji before this game o_O...................

My biggest beef by far with this game is the Co-Op. For some reason the Co-op game is not nearly as visceral or enjoyable as the singleplayer. The Graphics and presentation are noticeably toned down and the game felt incredibly stale. I wish they actually did a horizontal split screen like gears which might have helped a bit.
 
Cover becomes more important the further you get into R:FoM. I was a run and gunner too but once you get to certain levels, there is no way you can play that way.

I never said Resistance didn't require taking cover, just that it's not as central to the game play as with GoW. The way GoW handles your health, combined with the difficulty of hitting anything while moving, make it quite different from Resistance, where you can (depending on the situation) jump into the midst of several enemies and actually expect to survive.

So far the thing I like best about Resistance is the number of enemies you get onscreen at times. It really feels like you're in an intense firefight.

I kind of get what you're talking about. I think Resistance would've benefited greatly from a cover system like they used in Rainbow Six Vegas. at times i'd even be kneeling behind cover and it didn't work too well. Also the control scheme shouldve been more designed to be like Halo.
 
Yea, but if you want every FPS to be like Rainbow Six's cover system, we are going to see the death of traditional FPS'. Every game's focus will be how well you use cover, and if you can blind fire the enemy well enough.

ALTHOUGH that is fun. I dont believe that all games should be like that.

AND with Resistances crazy-ass weapons, cover system would take away from them. And blind firing with the sticky bomb gun would just look idiotic.
 
well it's been awhile since I gave up on resistance so I decided to give it another go. I'm in the part with the underground subway station after you return to london and MAN it's frickin hard on normal. That's not the part that annoys me though, it's really the checkpoint at the beginning of that part is WAY too far off, I hate having to replay through the same parts over and over just to die later. I'm really just considering starting over on easy, or is there any way to continue the game on easy midway?

The main thing that pisses me off besides the checkpoints is the whole cover system. I crouch behind something and I still get shot, but if you charge in you die pretty much instantly.
 
Rumor has it more content is on the way, maybe sometime in March. Can't want to see what it might be.

I'd suggest playing through easy then, it'll unlock new weapons for your next try that might help.
 
I absolutely love Resistance. It's definitely the best FPS I ever played (console and PC). I've enjoyed playing online, which is a first, especially for an FPS. I'm glad the game isn't too difficult, since I'm not too experienced at FPS.

I think it's around an 8.5 in my book, I've played better. One thing I hated was after I updated the console for the millionth time, my save became corrupted and lost.
 
I love this game... I love the weapons, they're well designed, and each has their use is certain situations. In the later levels, the carbine.. is almost useless. The graphics are beautiful.. the story is pretty good as well. The enemy A.I., is the best that I've seen.

I think the one issue there is, comes from how Insomniac decided to tell the story. The narrative approach works, but you don't get to know the main character, and form a bond with him, like you do in other games. I think that maybe the first couple of levels should have been Narrated, then you catch u to him in the present, and then you get to hear him speak, talk, and thus for a bond. but I'm sure they know that this is just part 1 of at least 2... so the Narrative story, is fine for now... but in part 2, we difinitely need to get more dialog from the main character...

I actually enjoyed the story by the end. Have they made any announcements about a sequel? Because the ending definitely sets us up for one.

Now I'm debating whether I want to trade it in and get as much as I can for it, or play through it again with the new weapons...
 
Played through about the first hour and I'm very impressed.

I definitely wrote it off when I first heard about it, but it delivers. the A.I. is awesome.

Does your keyboard charge you by the letter or something?
 
I don't know, I think the relationship with the character is a lot like the character in Half-Life and it works well enough.
