What's Diakatana?
John Romero was one of the guys behind Doom and Quake when he worked at id. He then left to make his own company called Ion Storm, with his flagship FPS game being called Daikatana. It centered around a character time travelling to different stages. It was started in the early 90s and was thought to be the first ground-breaking FPS to appear after Quake, said to include things like advanced lighting, shadows, shaders, and all the other pop technology buzzwords of the time. Essentially, the biggest game in the world.
But it got delayed forever. And then forever some more. Much like Duke Nukem Forever and Prey, it was thought to have become vaporware (although, of course, DNF is supposed to still come out, and Prey was just released).
Romero had a huge history of being a rock star game designer, preaching about developer freedom with his Fabio-esque locks of hair and whatnot. I think he might even have spent time arguing online with gamers.
There is a famous print ad that ran that I quoted - "John Romero is going to make you his bitch."
Long story short, after being in limbo for a while, it got released, and was less than mediocre. Washed out palettes, shitty graphics, nowhere near as comparable to contemporary games like Half-Life, and essentially as bare bones as you could get.
It sucked. It still sucks. But it was hyped to be the biggest game ever for a long time, when it just sucked.
