Patch Notes / How to Update (Last update 6/10/2014) - http://retron5.in/?src=98f13708210194c475687be6106a3b84

I've included the text from the pre-order era of this OP in spoilers for reference.
UPDATE 5/27/14: It's real this time. Hyperkin's June 6 release date is happening. Many mom and pop stores that have received their units have started selling them already, and many people who have ordered from Amazon (myself included) are reporting getting emails from Amazon notifying them that their orders qualify for release day delivery and are updating estimated delivery status to June 6th, no longer showing the "we need more time" placeholder. It's worth noting that so far only people who have ordered the grey unit from Amazon are receiving order updates (which coincides with Hyperkin reporting on their facebook page that they had shipped Amazon's grey preorder units, but Amazon had yet to place an order for the black units). All consoles that have been shown off online by reviewers, people who have been able to buy them before the street date, or Hyperkin themselves have all been grey consoles to this point. No word on black consoles. Another note: Chris Gallizzi of Hyperkin responded to an inquiry about Newegg orders by saying that he is not aware of any issues with Newegg's preorders, and they should be good to go for the launch.

UPDATE 5/22/14: Just one day after IGN and Polygon reported that Hyperkin would begin shipping units to retailers on May 22 (today as of this writing), Hyperkin essentially confirmed that. They have announced that the launch date for the long overdue RetroN 5 is June 6th, 2014. In a much quieter fashion (just by responding to a random person's comment) they confirmed this would be for North America only and that the console would launch in the UK in September. There is also one more small hitch. The rumor that the first batch of units would be only for mom/pop B&M retailers and that NO units from this batch would go to Amazon or Newegg has been gaining some serious steam. While Hyperkin has been responding to a decent amount of comments on their facebook page from excited fans, they continue to ignore questions about when Amazon orders will ship. So it seems those of us who preordered on Amazon still don't have a solid release date. Fulfillment could happen any time between June 6th through September or beyond.

UPDATE 5/21/14: IGN today reported that the RetroN 5 would begin shipping out on May 22 (tomorrow, as of this writing)! This coincides with Chris Gazzilli, Hyperkin's project manager, posting a picture on his facebook page of a massive shipping container full of RetroN 5 units. Ladies and Gentlemen, it seems hell may have just frozen over.

UPDATE 5/13/14: Hyperkin has listed the RetroN 5, and it's controllers, on their company wholesale store for authorized retailers to buy. The console (both colors) and controllers (both colors) are listed as sold out. I'm not sure if they were in stock and sold out quickly, or if they haven't been made available yet. Regardless, it's good news that the system is listed for the first time ever. Additionally, reviewers such as GameSpot and several youtube reviewers have received their review units, which appear to be retail units. The RetroN 5 seems to finally be around the corner. We'll see, but things look promising right now. One thing to note: the listing for the console on Hyperkin's wholesale page indicates that each wholesale box contains six units. If this is the case, it would seem to debunk the previous report of the console being shipped in quantities of four per retailer.

UPDATE 4/25/14: While this hasn't technically been confirmed by Hyperkin, I take it as fact. It's worth remembering that NOTHING has been officially confirmed by Hyperkin. Hyperkin has remained silent until unofficially confirming almost all known info in random interviews with various youtubers and forum members. Therefor, again, I take this as fact:

I spoke to Hyperkin today.

Here are the "unofficial" details.

The "end of May" release is a "soft" release. Meaning they really are waiting for the next batch due in the summer for the official real release. Amazon is NOT getting any of the units released at the end of May. Each retailer is only getting 4 units. Retail on the unit is $139.99 and $39.99 for the additional controller. The reasons for the price increase are both cosmetic and technical but if it works as it should then it should be a great retro system.

Our 4 are already taken with pre-orders. If you know any stores locally that are getting units, and you want one for end of May, then i suggest you contact them and put money down. Keep in mind that each store is getting 4 units only for the soft launch.
UPDATE 4/17/14: Hyperkin has increased the price of the RetroN 5, saying "north of $100, between $129.99 and $149.99". Alll pre-orders from Amazon should be honored via their pre-order price guarantee. I believe Newegg has the same guarantee, I am not sure about Stone Age Gamer or 8 Bit Classics. Think Geek still hasn't opened pre-orders on the unit, instead offering a link to be signed up for email notifications as to when it will be available. Also on the Amazon front, they have sold out or pre-orders. Furthermore, it is more likely you'll learn the ETA from Amazon, Newegg, or whoever you ordered it from. Hyperkin has gone on record of saying they will never again announce a hard release date for anything.

UPDATE 4/12/14: After Hyperkin denied the console was delayed again and vigoruosuly shoved the month of April up everyone's ass for half a year, today they delayed the vaporware console yet again. At the Midwest Gaming Classic, they did their annual presentation. They ignored the planned April 2014 release, but finally somebody in the crowd asked about it. The Hyperkin rep said it was releasing in "30 days, guaranteed". This is not the first time they used the word "guaranteed", last time was about April so this doesn't mean jack shit. So maybe it'll randomly show up at people's houses at the end of may, maybe it wont, and maybe my ass will fly out of my ass.

Retron 5 Delay History:
-Summer 2013 (which they continued to say after summer was over, claiming they meant "Indian Summer" or "California Summer"....i'm not making this up)
-December 10 2013
-Quarter 1 2014
-Quarter 2 2014
-First two weeks of April
-April 2014, guaranteed
-Gauranteed within 30-40 days of April 12, 2014
-June 6 2014

DELAYED. ANY UPDATES FROM HYPERKIN WILL COME ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/HyperkinGames

UPDATE: In a recent interview, Hyperkin confirmed that the initial batch of units WILL NOT BE ENOUGH to meet day ome demand. Also confirmed was the ability for the system to act as a multitap. Example: in a four player SNES game, two players could use snes controlles, one player could use the retron controller, and one player could use a genesis controller. Interview can be found here.

Pre-order at Amazon (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Newegg: Black (SOLD OUT) or Grey (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Stone Age Gamer (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)
Pre-order at 8 Bit Classics (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)

UPDATE: Hyperkin claims that they opened up some packaged retail units and discovered some units had faulty pins. because of this, the Retron 5 has been delayed. No new release date has been announced, although Hyperkin has stated the unit will release in 2014 and that they are aiming for Q1. This is the Retron 5's third delay.

EDIT: Preorders are sold out at Amazon and Newegg.

Retron5 pre-orders have finally (about damn time) opened.

For those of you who have been following this console, you know it's quite highly anticipated and looks to be far better than any clone system released before.

For those unfamiliar, here's a little info:

 • It's one system that plays games for the following systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, Mega Drive, Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.
 • Two controller ports for each console will be built in with the system. It will also come with one wireless universal controller.
 • Outputs in HDMI and upscales for HDTVs. Early impressions and videos of this have been extremley postive. From the website: "The RetroN 5 will up convert the video signal to show clearer and cleaner images, with vibrant colors on an HDTV with a resolution output of up to 720p through the use of shaders. You will also be able to select the aspect ratio in our GUI, from the standard 4:3 to the HD ratio of 16:9."
 • Features a user interface (dashboard. Somewhat similar of the PS3 interface in appearance, in my opinion).
 • Features save states. From the website: "Most games did not allow for you to freely save your games. The RetroN 5 will allow you to save their games at any point during gameplay, and will feature an autosave feature upon shutdown. You will be able to load your saves at anytime during gameplay."
 • Button reassignment supported. From the website: "Users will be able to program the controller to assign buttons to their preference. In turn, the RetroN 5 will save these custom layouts, so that users will not have to constantly reconfigure the button configuration. This feature will also be available to people wanting to remap their buttons on their original controllers."
 • 100% game cartridge compatibility, without lag.
 • Sega Power Base Converter compatible, allowing Sega Master System games to be played.
More information is here. It may be a bit dated since this was from back when they first announced the console, but I figured it was the best site to link since it also featured some screenshots as well. http://hyperkin.com/blog/2013/03/retron-5-details-revealed-from-the-midwest-gaming-classic/ There is also plenty of info on Hyperkin's facebook page.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and i'm extremley excited that pre-orders are finally open. For one console that not only plays all of these console's games, but upscales them and features save states (either to the cartridge (if supported) or the console itself)...this seems like a great deal. And if you've been following the hype for the console, there is a good chance it could end up selling out. Hyperkin isn't a huge company and this thing has a TON of pre-release demand (just check out the comments on the facebook page). I like the look of the black one a bit better, because it seems to be the traditional console color nowadays. But I opted for the grey model because the black console and controller seem like they'd be fingerprint magnets.

Preorder either color here at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-RetroN-Gaming-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00DZIX3CQ/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1378958043&sr=8-13&keywords=retron+5 or here at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=retron%205&N=-1&isNodeId=1&RandomID=65244712392254220130925161655

Here are pictures of the two consoles, since the pictures on Amazon aren't that great:

Tested mine out tonight and it runs everything I threw at it just fine. Holy crap is that controller bad. I mean, I wasn't expecting much in the first place but this is some hot garbage. The control pad will stick in any direction I push it in unless I manually move it back to the neutral position and it's way over sensitive. On top of that the face buttons feel bad to me, very tiny clicks. Doesn't feel like any console buttons that I'm used to.
I like the controller a lot. I haven't experienced any of those issues with sticking and the buttons seem fairly clicky to me. Maybe you should contact Hyperkin (it may be a defective controller).

I was expecting the worst with the controller after reading everyone's reactions on here, but I'm actually pleasantly surprised by it so far. Honestly surprised with how solid an experience everything with the console has been so far. Aside from the tight grip in the Genesis slot. That thing is no joke.

Haven't spent a ton of time with it yet, but already feel like this was $99 very well spent. Still can't believe it's actually here. Firmware update and cheat code downloads next on the list...

Blergh, I tried running Metroid Fusion and it corrupted all my original save files on the cart :(  I was able to launch the game, but upon starting up a saved game the game said that my save files were corrupted (A, B, and C).  I verified that the files were indeed corrupted on my GBA SP.  The game was able to reformat the save slots, so I think the cart itself should be okay, but we'll see.

For what it's worth, the RetroN 5 was able to run my copy of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, import the saves, and save just fine.  I verified that my saves in this game worked just fine on the same GBA SP.

I wonder if this is because my grey unit had older versions of the application, software, and hardware (below).  I probably should have updated everything before running a bunch of games (NES, GBA, Genesis/Mega Drive), but I just couldn't wait.  I'm updating my system right now (below is my grey system version info):

 • Retron 4 application: v1.0 (build 1223
 • System Hardware: v0.2.0
 • Hardware revision: v1.0
As you can see, this is fairly old since I have to update to appli v0.2.0 to v0.2.2 before I can update the Hardware revision application to v1.1.  For my version above, the instructions are a bit clunky on their site, but I think I understand how to update everything.

At first glance the system looks sleek and almost audacious in its design.  Upon closer inspection you will, as others have noticed, slightly sloppy manufacturing and plastic that does come off as a little cheap.  You can sort of see the swirled plastic of the grey in my unit, and the hole cutouts in the shell on the rear lack a finish to them.  The cart slots I used this evening are indeed super tight, save for the GBA slot (which seemed a hair looser than actual GBA/GBA SP/DS/DS Lite cart slots).

Regarding the controller, I think it's pretty good for a clone system overall, but that's coming from a guy who has owned a lot of truly crappy console clones and their abhorrent controllers.  I haven't had issues with the d-pad sticking, but I agree that its throw is just a hair too sensitive.  I say that as a person who owns a Neo Geo Pocket and the Neo Geo Pocket Color and who adores that glorious d-pad.  Hopefully the sensitivity can be adjusted in some manner in a future update.  The face buttons are okay, and don't require a lot of force to register.  They are a little flimsy, but again, they are okay for most games.  The shoulder buttons hinge from the inside corners, bumper style.  Their flatness and placement make pressing them a bit awkward for me, but I may get used to it.

One thing few people really touch on in reviews is the ability to not only exit to the main menu then return to the game right where you left off, but also the ability to create save states for a game and save it on the system (multiple save slots, too).  I have always been terrible at the Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog game but being able to create a save point before an area I know I'll die in was amazing.  I loaded up the save point over and over again to repeat a section of the game I kept falling.  This will mean that I can likely beat old NES favorites after decades of trying (Blaster Master and Super Turrican, I'm looking at you!) with the save function on my side.  No more writing down River City Ransom codes (oh, those insanely long codes)!

Overall I'm still happy I bought the system.  It's great fun to revisit all these old games I've purchased since I was a kid.  Hopefully Hyperkin updates the system frequently to address problems in a timely manner.

Oh, and another minor thing to mention.  Open the box on the left side, not the right (box front facing you).  I wondered why the cardboard tray was hard to pull out until I realized the right side is narrower at the top due to the box design.  I didn't damage the box, but perfectionists might like to know this anyway.

My first impressions feel pretty much on par with others-- some ways I am pleasantly surprised (emulation generally seems good), some ways I am a bit disappointed (I don't hate the controller, but it definitely takes some getting used to)... it feels like... well, a well-made clone system. I basically only have Genesis and GB/GBA games to test with it, but yeah, the Genesis slot was insanely tight. Made me think I was going to break it...

The initial firmware update was sort of clunky, and I don't get the "write firmware request" thing at all. So having to go back and forth to get 2 firmware updates seemed weird.

The menus look decent and are well organized, but I feel like the in-game menu needs more options (and needs keypress commands)-- I hated not being able to switch aspect ratio/etc on the fly, unless I am missing something. And it took too many presses to change the filtering. Does it save your video settings per game? Mine didn't seem to and I vaguely thought I read something that it did.

Overall, it about hit my expectations. It's rough around the edges, and hopefully some firmware updates will solve some of the obvious issues. I'm not THRILLED by it but not disappointed-- a bit "meh". I don't think I'd want to pay over $100 for it, though, unless I didn't have any working systems and needed a unit to play my huge collection of retro games on.

Started off okay. It read all but one of the 20 games I tried. I thought several games were stuck forever in those vice grip connectors. But now the only game it will recognize is Nigel Mansell World Championship for SNES. It doesn't even try on anything else. Just says no cart inserted (but will error if two carts are inserted). And the NES connector is all warped up. Not good.

This should be a good starter set for anyone looking to build a retro collection:http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=958029Actually, for the world's biggest video game collection, it's a bigger disappointment. No Super Metroid, Super Mario 2 or 3, or Link to the Past? But, hey, 3 Lizzie McGuire GBA games. FAIL.
I like that he writes the reserve is realistic/modest and then you can look and see this:
Reserve Not Met
Current Bid:$90,251.00 by darasue
Not to mention--not to judge... well, that's a lie but anyway--he's selling it supposedly because he has "family matters to attend to" and then states that he's sold off his collection many times before; so he's probably manic OCD and spends all of his worldly time collecting videogames (when he's not running game shops or writing books, apparently) and he promised his wife/husband/parents he'd spend time being there for them... but may go back to collecting in the future. Egads, this guy. /snapjudgement

I just think of the controller less as a game controller, and more of just a system remote for navigating the RteroN menus. I never plan on using it to play any games with.

So far I like it, haven't used the controller and couldn't get a Game Boy Color game to work but I've played (NES) Super Mario 3, Jaws, Cobra Triangle, TMNT. (SNES) Star Fox, Super Mario Kart, (GBA) Zelda 2AOL, Metroid Fusion and Super Mario Advance all worked great. Have the same issue with games being hard to pull out but over all I think it was worth the $99 considering I don't own any working consoles it plays.

Im very pleased with my gray one.  Just gotta go out and get some stuff to clean the NES carts I got, since most of them are old used dirty ones I got from various stores and amazon.  But everything I've put in so far that wasn't dirty works great, and I got all the original controllers to use too.

Tried to update the software today to see if it fixed any of my issues.

System update went well.

Retron says I need the application update.  Ok.  Write request to SD card.  Do all the file nonsense on the computer.  Reinsert SD card to Retron.  "Application update required.  Write firmware update to SD card."

I already did that.  What's the deal?  Try again, maybe something went wrong.

NO SD CARD INSERTED.

YES IT IS!  BLEEPING POS RETRON!  Let's try another card.  Nope.  Denied.

So now my SD port doesn't work.  Yay.

I think you may have only done the first half of the instructions:

http://retron5.in/node/2

In addition to the file you get with the request to update, you also need this system update file:

http://retron5.dpdev.com/retron-system-update.img

Put that on the root of your SD card.

For everybody who has failing genesis (or any) slots: did they fail before or after the firmware? I'm not updating mine if it'd gonna kill a slot.

Not sure it's possible (or at least, it is nigh improbable) for a firmware update to permanently kill a cartridge slot.

My SNES slot is starting to read carts intermittently. This seems like an issue of wear due to the "death grip" the Retron has on carts and not software/firmware related.

Seems safe to update.

With all these problems I keep reading, I am glad I do have the original systems to play on if I ever need to. I just wanted the Retron 5 so I could play the classics with hdmi input and only have the one system out instead of 5 or 6. I guess I will see how it goes if I ever get my black one.

Was excited about my friend finding a couple and sending one to me, but now you guys have me worried.  :(

On a good note, this has made me bring my old games out of storage, and found a few obscure ones that go for a little bit on Amazon. Guess I can try to sell them and get games I really want.  :)

Never knew Godzilla 2 and North and South for NES would be worth much.

Finally got to test mine after getting home from comic con tonight. All slots work (haven't tried the famicom one since I have no famicom carts). I tested a NES, GBA, and SNES repro and all worked (though the Retron did not recognize the SNES and GBA carts and gave me the 'this may not work' warning).

I would like to confirm that you can use the SNES controller for any other platform (I haven't tested the other way around because frankly why would you want to?). I've seen conflicting posts about this and wanted to be sure the correct information is out there.

I'm gravely concerned about the saving issue. My Earthbound Zero did not show my save file. Naturally terrified I put it back into my NES and the save file was still there. I did not try to play it on the Retron for fear of wiping my old save with a new one that the Retron may not even recognize the next time I went to boot it.

I've only had really one other issue so far (the two step update is really annoying but it's out of the way for now so I'm not counting that) is that I did not order the G.I. Joe edition with kung-fu grip. I was initially scared to put in my carts as they required far more force than they should have. I felt like I was going to break the carts. Same goes for yanking them out. I've read that the system needs to be broken in so I'm probably going to just put carts in and out over and over again tomorrow afternoon when I return from con.

That all aside, I really like the aesthetics of the system. Very stylish and the place at the back to put carts is really convenient. The controller definitely feels cheap, but it gets the job done. The thumb stick is weird and just a little hard to control effectively.

Games simply look amazing on this thing. Star Fox is incredible, it looks every bit as good as IGN showed in their video. Even the Game Boy games are crisp. I'm more inclined than ever to pick up Gargoyle's Quest if I could ever find it in the wild.

Has anyone tried startropics yet?  I started a game on my cart, and it will play fine for a few minutes, then have lagging slowdown for a couple seconds, then fast forward to where it should be.  Not sure if this is a cart issue, or the retron not reading it right.

Glad to see this thread has been looking better since this came out.

I'm still trying to find one in the wild. My 2nd and Charles must of been made aware that they will be getting some in as all of the previous Retrons were put on display and bunched together. My friend who works there claims to have heard nothing but I'm waiting for the fb pic of him with it (and not tell me) because he would totally do that, lol.

While I do have two local game stores, none of them stock Hyperkin consoles & accessories yet.

I cancelled my black one on Newegg as I have one day shipping on Amazon now for the same one. I didn't want to risk getting two of these, even though I know the resale value for this is high now. I guess the only positive is that I can let Hyperkin and the Gray Retron owners find/iron out all of the issues.  :D/

I found several of the grays at a local shop. I just couldn't bring myself to buy one for $140 when my black is $76. I'm just going to wait till they come.
Isn't that the slot for the controller?
It might be. I kept the controller with me when I was playing. I just tossed it to the side when it finished testing it last night.

New update is out

How to update http://retron5.in/node/2

Changes in this release include:

 • Greatly improved manipulation of Gameboy/Gameboy Color cartridge saves
 • Added support for SNES S-DD1 carts (Star Ocean)
 • Added support for Sega Genesis cartridge mappers (fixes Super Street Fighter II)
 • Fixed SNES "Super 4 in 1 Multicart" soft reset problem
 • Tweaked the overscan operation
 • Compatibility fixes (Super Metroid, Phantasy Star IV, Beyond Oasis)

As someone who still has a preorder out on one of these things, I am worried this it will be utter crap based on feedback and reviews, and I don't want to be wasting my money because it seems more likely to break than work. So, while it won't be the same, does anyone have experience with composite to HDMI converters? I know it's not going to work miracles, but I already own the systems the Retron can play, and I simply would be happy with the ghosting I see while playing SNES (and blurryness on N64) go away. Feedback and suggestions on what to get (if anyone has experience using these) would be appreciated.

The last bullet point. Good I was about to try all those soon too.

FInally opened my gray Retron 5 only to find that it's missing the controller.  Fantastic!

Managed to get this console for $76 from Amazon but now I'm not sure if I want to bother contacting Hyperkin about this or to just initiate a refund from Amazon.

Super. I just went through the hassle of updating last night. Might as well do it again. I guess I'd rather have lots of updates than none at all though.

I literally just bought Beyond Oasis about an hour ago so it's good to know that it 'should' work after the update.

There will be many more updates coming guys. A couple of guys over at the nintendoage forums are directly working with one of hyperkins tech guys to iron out several bugs on some games. They have gotten sf alpha 2 to work now through this and have also found a bug in playing yoshi's island that the tech is working on fixing. The tech guy is also actively working on trying to fix the global save cart bug right now.

Apparently a store close by has a few in. Welp, been meaning to use my Amazon card so here we go, lol.

I've been peeking in this thread so I'm wondering on the whole save thing. Will this wipe my saves on my cart? Because I was planning on doing a Pokemon Red (then Gold) run through on the Retron and then resume it at work via my SP.

according to reviews yes saves on carts will be wiped clean according to people

The saves are only wiped if you actually take the time to import them to the unit, correct?

Just trying to confirm (as the games I have with saves I don't want to jeopardize!) putting in a game to try it out won't make it clear the saves.

Well, I got it and everything was fine and dandy until I decided to update it. I got in a classic Android style update loop and I can't get out of it. Tried the pinhole button twice in the back but it's not doing a system reset. Of course Hyperkin mentions this button but doesn't mention on how to actually use it unless you contact support.

Gotta love secrets on how factory reset your console. =S I'll e-mail them about that.

EDIT: So I forgot follow through the rest of this stupid update process, ugh. Guess i'll fiddle with that tomorrow. (Step 1 upload this file, then you'll download this file, then you put that file back in the retron... etc -- seriously why is it that hard?)

Tried the pinhole button twice in the back but it's not doing a system reset. Of course Hyperkin mentions this button but doesn't mention on how to actually use it unless you contact support.

Gotta love secrets on how factory reset your console. =S I'll e-mail them about that.
They do say "hey don't touch that button before you talk to us!!!" ...more or less

Mine came in early Friday afternoon, I was out the whole weekend so I haven't played yet. I'm also super broke after this, this weekend, & getting my Passport sometime this week. Soon I'll play you, soon.
