Alright, since I'm back on CAG regularly I have to bring back my old topic.

ALWAYS CHECK HERE FOR RELEASE AND REGION INFO!

A GOOD REVIEW SITE FOR TRANSFER QUALITY (Usually only covers region 1 releases)

TRUSTED ASIAN BLU SELLERS

http://www.amazon.co.uk/
You can find a lot of the Tartans and other releases that didn't come out in the US here. Way cheaper and they usually will ship to the US. Make sure you check the region!

Region A includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus the Republic of China (Taiwan), Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Korea.

Region B includes most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.

Region C contains the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as the People's Republic of China and Russia.

You need to be careful ordering from Amazon UK because many of them are Region B locked.

You are better off buying the Japanese, Korean, HK or Taiwan version because they are Region A like the USA.

I really don't know why someone recommended Amazon UK as a good place to buy Asian BDs. It is the last place I would order Asian BDs from.

Yes Asia is good.

I buy Korean BDs from K2DVD

There are many places I would buy Asian BDs from before Amazon UK.
ebay, CD Japan, HMV Japan, DDDHouse, Play Asia, etc

And you can't trust the Amazon listings for telling you what region code a disc is. The cases are often labeled wrong as well. You have to look them up at http://www.blu-ray.com/ or other places like http://www.asianblurayguide.com/ or http://bluray.liesinc.net/

I'm assuming you watched it on Blu by you posting it in this thread. How did it look? I ask because the Ong-Bak and Protector Blu Rays have been really cheap a couple times and they aren't supposed to look that hot.

I would double dip on Chocolate though.
Just meh. Not really gonna blow you away. Just check out some reviews online like at hi def digest to see what they'll be like.

Well hell, when you put it like that, I might double dip then.
I am debating Ong Bak and The Protector right now though. I didn't think I wanted them, since the blu's weren't reviewed that well, but now I am remembering that my copies are bootleg DVDs that I bought while in Korea, so I might as well buy them so I can own real copies.
I have the 3 disc LE and they're region A,B,and C so they will play on US players.
The one I was referring to is region locked. I bought it thinking that it would be region free like the limited edition.

Sorry folks, I should have mentioned the subtitles thing when I was in here talking the disc up.

I got "I'm A Cyborg" and its special features are all PAL.

Yeah, I noticed that too. They don't play on my ps3 (they just skip back to menu) but my htpc will play them fine.

M

can someone explain to me about region codes?
what will play and what wont? i know i should buy A since im in the US but that means B and C wont work? and what are the numbers? 15 18 etc. sorry if it already had been explained.

Keep in mind that this is just a gist of the info provided. If you want to learn all you can, you can look into google.

In blu-ray there are 3 region codes (A, B, and C). Some blu's are region free, meaning either they are designated regions A, B, and C or they do not have any region set upon them. If a blu-ray is locked to one region then only that region can play it.

In dvd there are 8 official region codes. Region 0 is not really an official code, it just means that there was no region set to that disc and all players can play it.

There is also a thing called formatting. America and Japan use NTSC formatting which is how our tv monitors are set to view video. PAL is what pretty much the rest of the world uses. If your tv/monitor/player cannot process both then that is another conflict you have to deal with.

hesitated when i seen "Classification 15" so with the unsure feeling, ordered a standard on amazon.com instead of a special edition on amazon.co.uk....

That's the UK's ratings system, like the MPAA here. Classification 15 means it is appropriate for people aged 15 and up. It has nothing to do with player compatability.

Hmmmm, that's weird. When I went to the Philippines two years ago, all of the dvds I took took with me wouldn't work in my wife's families' dvd player. But according to that map, the US and the Philippines (and Korea, because I think some of the dvds were Korean that I took) are all Region A.

That was for Blu-rays. DVDs are different.

For DVD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set.

1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories

2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland

3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau

4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Oceania

5 India, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea

6 People's Republic of China

7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)

8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.

ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

You also have to worry about PAL/NTSC with DVDs and sometimes with the extras on BDs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code#PAL.2FSECAM_vs._NTSC

DVDs are also formatted for use on two conflicting regional television systems: 525/60 (NTSC) or 625/50 (PAL/SECAM). Strictly speaking, NTSC, PAL and SECAM are all analog chroma-encoding formats which have no relevance in the digital domain (as evident in the conflation of PAL and SECAM, which are actually two very different analog color systems). These terms continue to be used (improperly) as a method of identifying refresh rates and vertical resolution.

NTSC is the analog color TV format historically associated with Canada, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Taiwan, United States, and other countries. PAL is the analog color TV format historically associated with most of Europe, most of Africa, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, North Korea, and other countries (and Brazil, but using the refresh rate and resolution commonly associated with NTSC). Some DVD players only play discs identified as NTSC or PAL, while others can play both standards.

In general, it is easier for consumers in PAL countries to view NTSC DVDs than vice versa. Almost all DVD players sold in PAL countries play both kinds of discs, and most modern PAL TVs can handle the converted signal. However, most NTSC players cannot play PAL discs, and most NTSC TVs do not work with PAL video. Those in NTSC countries, such as in North America, generally require both a multi-standard player and television to view PAL discs, or a converter box. There are also differences in pixel aspect ratio (720x480 vs. 720x576), display frame rate (29.97 vs. 25), and surround audio options (Dolby Digital vs. MPEG audio). Again, NTSC discs (with Dolby Digital audio) play on over 95% of DVD systems worldwide, while PAL discs play on very few players outside of PAL countries.

Most DVD PC software and hardware can play both NTSC and PAL video and both audio standards

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I must've gotten really lucky then when I ordered my Harry Potter Blu-ray Box Set from them. It's the only thing I've bought from them, and it totally plays. I just checked the box and cases, and there wasn't any Region code on any of them, but when I checked the discs themselves, I saw that they all had EU-JPN/Z1 printed near the bottom of the disc. So apparently I managed to get a European Zone 1 version or something. Is that what it means? :whistle2:?

Almost all Warner Bros. releases are Region Free.

The region coding info on some BD cases look like this.

abc_logo.gif

That would be region free because it lists A, B, and C. However, these are often wrong so you are best off looking them up online to confirm what regions it will play in.

Wow, I did not know that there were that many different regions for DVD's. I thought the amount for DVD's and Blu's were comparable but I guess not. Well, I learned something new ITT.

I had a quick question. I saw Ip Man at Walmart on DVD for $10.
I know, I know. There is no excuse to have not seen the movie yet, but I haven't.
For everyone that has seen it, would you recommend grabbing it now or waiting on a cheap price for the Blu? I don't mind watching non-HD movies really and from what the reviews say, the video is kind of spotty on the Blu.

Get it now on DVD or wait for a Blu?

Depends on your preference my man. I would say look on Amazon,Half, or Ebay for a cheap blu.

Good, Bad & the Weird showed up in my Amazon quick picks making it $10.92 shipped. I know its 1080i but for that price I think I'll survive. I hope more Asian films show up in my quick picks.
Damn, I'm gonna order Thirst as well. Maybe A Tale of Two Sisters also.
Didn't even know that A Tale of Two Sisters got a release after Tartan went out of business. Where will you be ordering it from?

It is exclusive to HMV UK and will cost about $20 to get it. It is region B-locked.

Not sure it is worth ordering. It got bad reviews. There is actually a Korean DVD that is better than the BD.

Hmmm, seeing that made me look it up and I guess I can get it for $12. I'm buying it. Been meaning to see it for a while now. Seems to get a lot of praise.

Man I wish I had my a Frys somewhere near me. Hell, even on the same coast as me would be good.
Nice find for those near a store though. Hope some people jump on it.

No kidding. I visited my sister in L.A. and I finally had a chance to go to one. Pretty good sales, and they seemed to match online competitors (as long as the product was in stock and ready to ship).

I've missed out on many a deal by not having a Frys nearby, but I do have a Microcenter a mile away so I can't complain too much. :p

I guess it is cheaper at Fry's, like Handsome posted, but Amazon has the Ip Man collector's Blu for $15, as does Best Buy. May not be the best price it has ever been but I'm grabbing it.

The Man From Nowhere is $16 at Amazon too. I know Walmart had it for cheap, but I missed out on it and I've heard it is really good. So I'll probably get it too.

Those aren't bad prices for two very good films. I just rewatched IP Man before I watched part two and always have fun watching it.

What asian films are you guys watching this weekend? I'm on a Tadanoubou Asano kick so I watched Ichi the Killer, Last Life in the Universe, and Vital. About to finally watch Invisible Waves.

I didn't even know there was a third one until looking at Wikipedia.
I got my two copies while I was in Korea back in 07, but they are bootlegs, so one of these days I will pick them up on DVD.
The third one is supposed to be bad but the first two are good.
The second one is a lot more humorous than the first, for better or worse. But they are both great.
