Returning EB purchase to BB/CC?

Open question...

My friend bought me a couple new Xbox games from an EBGames near his home. I already have both. There is no EBGames near my home (if you can believe that!)

Will I be able to get credit if I return them at a Best Buy or Circuit City to buy something else?

i would actually like an answer to this to. i assume its "illegal". i know that circuit city has to have the purchase in thier system. when i was a wee lad it used to work at media play, but in recent months has anyone pulled this off?

oooooh....you might not want to ask that here. There's a bunch of CAGs who are opposed to this behavior.

But bypassing the ethical concerns for a later time, you best off taking them to wal-mart for credit, provided that they still sell those games. Wal-mart won't require a receipt.

This is borderline illegal...and odds are that the store will refuse to take it unless you've got a receipt.

You're probably out of luck, unless you actually drive to an EB.

I believe you can return a few things to wall mart without the reciept. I believe the limit is three before they start to become difficult. However, I've never tried.

BB has some new system I think. I went to return a dvd I bought there without my receipt and they were able to do the return based on my name and credit card. I wouldn't try this at BB or CC. They give you crap if you have the receipt. I don't support the idea but I do know we had sealed returns at EB that we would give store credit only at the current price.

Walmart on the other hand. The employees don't care about anything, they just want you out of the store. I have seen them take anything back without a receipt and for stupid reasons, even open crap that they know the person screwed up and blamed them.

Most stores will offer store credit without a reciept. Just use the old Gift excuse like Ikohn4ever
said and they usually agree to credit.

I would only use Walmart or Best Buy for gift returns. Also, Walmart limits you to three game returns in a calendar year I believe. Only take one at a time though, because I've been turned down because the total was over $50.00. At $49.99 it's not a problem. I don't think it's an evil thing as long as you are honest about it. I still get tons of games as gifts even though I tell people not to.

Go to Target. You can return it, but they won't give you cash. You need to buy another game in its place. My friend did this one time, it works.

The only time I know this works without a problem is after X-mas where almost every store takes anything back without a receipt. During the Genesis era I used to find a game somewhere cheap ($20) and then go to TRU and get $40 or more Jeffrey Dollars. It was sweet, but I`ve gotten older and no longer feel is the right thing to do.

anybody know if Kmart is good for doing this in, I was lookin at their store and since they have their price so high it makes it better for the game to be returned their

Best Buy sucks for returns; last christmas I got a PC game that I already had. My aunt bought it at BB and paid with cash and didn't bother saving the receipt (bought it in late november).

And BB REFUSED TO TAKE IT BACK. Even tho it was sealed. The SAME BB she purchased it at. Even tho it was a gift (Xmas time). Even after talking to 3 people about it (including a manager).

It was all in all one of the crappiest customer service experiences I have ever had actually.

YMMV, but in general I steer clear of BB.

I thought that most BB give you about the entire month of January to return things without receipt, along with alot of other stores.

I thought that too LOL... But everyone I talked to said they couldn't prove it was from that store - wouldn't even give me store credit... In fact, the game is still sitting (sealed) on my shelf forever unused :|.

Dude this exact same thing happend to me at BB except I actually got it returned. I was returning Battlefield: Vietnam and so I gave it to the lady and said I recieved it as a gift. It was sealed and everything and she examined it and finally opened it or something and said, "I opened it and found eb shrink wrap, but since I opened it, I have to give you the refund". THEN!, I was trading it in for champions of norrath for ps2. They had it for 49.99 but it should be 29.99. So I wanted to PM it with gamestop and she called the nearest location. They didn't have any but they were 29.99 and she said,"There all out at gamestop and I can only call the nearest location." wtf!? I thought. I asked her how much it was anyways and she said 29.99 but there all out so I can't PM it. MAN! Give me a break! In the end I finally traded it in. Man was she pissed.

i know im going to get flamed for this but, I bought 7 primals from Ebgames.com when they were on sale like 6$ each with free shipping(man I miss free shipping) and trade them three at time to walmart, and they were selling 39.99+tax at walmart a piece, so i spent 42$ and return them to walmart to get 290.50 in creadit, so I bought NBA ballers, another ps2 system, and fight night

not really illegal i dont believe, just out smarting a corporation(illegal is how much they pay their factory workers, now thats illegal)

How does one find "EB shrink wrap" by opening a game? I know sometimes EB gets sneaky and reseals a used game as new, but EB doesn't shrink wrap new games...the publishers/distributors do.

This is in fact illegal, though it isn't the most horrible crime in the world. Any time you return something to a store that you didn't purchase from them it's technically fraud. It could be stolen merchandise, purchased at a lower price and returned for profit, etc. In reality it's pretty much no big deal and they will probably sell it for the same thing but if you did this on any kind of large scale you could be arrested. For one item it would never come to that, nor could they really catch you.

Sorry to hear about some experiences but in NYC and a lot of other locations I know that Bestbuy let you return gifts through the end of January with no reciept. They were the only store who would do it without any way of looking you up in the system. CC needed to find you based on name, address, something. I actually went to a CC to return a gift my company had given me and didn't know who actually purchased it. I was told it would be ok over the phone, but when I got there the dickwad manager not only refused, he said "do you know that SOME people buy an item cheap and then try to return it to a store to make a profit". I was not doing that but even if he thought I might be he was way out of line trying to insinuate that. He also was trying to get me to give up the name of the person who told me over the phone that it would be ok. It was a nice young girl who had obviously just made a mistake so I left without dropping dime on her. The return wasn't important enough to me to get someone in trouble so I just left.

It is, but it's not something you're going to go to hell for or anything. Just because they're not smart enough to update their prices and charge a ton for old-ass games....it's stealing from them.

Yep, I'm pretty sure this is illegal (what ChrisXE posted). Your chances of anything happening to you are pretty slim unless you do this all the time at multiple stores.

As for the original poster, just tell them it was a gift and don't volunteer any information as to if it was bought at that store or not. If they ask, you either have to decide to be truthful and say you don't think it was bought there, or tell a little white lie and say you think it was purchased at another Best Buy or whatever.

The exact same thing happend to me. Now I have learned to always get the name of the person you talked to.

Yea thats what I said. wtf :?:

In the past I have found it easiest to return things to TRU if you don't have a reciept. You don't get cash though, but at least you could get some new games.

I am not sure if EB is still selling used games as new like they were, I heard something of a Lawsuit against them about doing that. I know if I bought a new game and found out it was used, I would be pissed!!
