Revolution Name Revealed - Nintendo Wii? WTF?

i have a feeling that a lot of people will just end up calling it nintendo.

i mean rather than say hey check out my wii, theyll say hey check out my new nintendo

...or something ...yeah

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo put in a feature that, at the push of a button, the Wii transforms into a humanoid robot and dances the Funky Chicken.

Slang terms come and go - like "Dis!" and "Psyche!" from my childhood.

And even though these conotations for "wii" haven't been used since ... the 70's (?) perhaps it's time that pack their bags and let the new Wii sherrif mosie on into town.

It's fine if a couple people say it, but when you have a 20+ thread with the same joke, it gets a little annoying. But I'm sure that is enough grounds to call me an idiot.

It is almost like the "OMG XBOX IS HUGE" jokes. For a while it was fine, but soon you couldn't go on to a gaming site without reading it. It got a annoying. Now it is less common that you hear a joke about the size (especially now that the 360 is out) and I actually find them funny now.

I just don't think people are going to be as hung up on Wii being the OMG PEE thing that a lot of people are doing now. Why would everyone not accept Wii as equaling "the new Nintendo console." That's what it is, that's what the name will mean. I can't help but assume that the "going Wii" jokes will die out within weeks, among most people. The name will stick...and once it does stick, that's when the benefits of having this name will be clearer (short, simple, different, makes a cool logo, etc).

That'd be gawd-awful hilarious if this all turned out to be some sort of massive prank. Talk about causing brand confusion - but it's certainly created a HUGE amount of press and there's more than enough time to firm everything up by launch.

And with regards to risking the ire of the general public, I doubt the name has gotten out to that point of causing too much heartburn.
 
I want to believe it's fake. I can't say for sure, but the lack of trademark, the lack of domains (nintendowii.com, wii.nintendo.com, etc.) leads me to believe that it just might be fake. Granted, I may be completely wrong, but this is a brilliant...

Oh, Nintendo.com still has a "Revolution" graphic at the top page...
 
If it DOES CHANGE, I dont see it as necessarily going back to Revolution. However, they cant exactly make name announcements at E3, because then we have another massive shock that takes focus away from games. If they're going to change the name again, they better do it, 10 minutes ago.

Ok, I'm throwing my hat in that Wii is fake. I eat humble pie if I'm wrong. I don't think that Revolution will be the final name either, but Wii is NOT going to be on the box when I buy my system this Autumn.
 
The trademark thing is a little weird. However, I'm going to accept Wii until I hear from Nintendo that it isn't going to stand.
 
I'll go ahead and side with it being fake, but only because I love conspiracy theories, I dont actually care if it changes or not.

If the keep it Revolution, then I dont think they can sell it under that name in say, China.

Hell, even wii.nintendo.com is a dead url. revolution.nintendo.com is very much alive.

We could be witnessing some of the best marketting the videogame industry has ever seen.

NintendoWii.com was registered by NoA, yesterday! It seems a little odd to me that they would risk someone else snatching the domain up before them, you would think they would register it weeks before the announcement.

Another interesting thing is that... they only registered the domain name until 2008, where as Nintendo.com is registered until 2014.

first, the damage control and explanations why Wii makes so much sense and how it's "brilliant"

then it's, OMGZ Wii is fake!! most brilliant marketing idea in history.

REALITY:

if wii is real: it's a retarded name

if wii isn't real: nintendo is fucking with people and has to resort to deceitful marketing blitz to get its console attention.

the only thing nintendo seems to be consistently "brilliant" at is brainwashing people.

Ha, now that would be hilarious. I bet the reaction (from us, the random gamers interested in this) would be pretty positive. For those who hated the name, they'd probably let out something of a sigh of relief and love how hilarious of a trick that'd be. For those who like the name, I think we'd all just enjoy the fact that Nintendo managed to absolutely HOOK us. Hopefully the new name would be as cool.

Anyway, that whole theory is a bit too far-fetched for me (the explanation of the name just makes too much since - the whole thing has not been silly enough for me to believe it's just a joke, in fact, it really has not been silly at all), but it'd be cool.

Deceitful marketing... like the ps2 delivering toy story quality graphics? The ps3 creating the (dramatic reverb) 4TH DIMENSION? The xbox 360 having a normal 3-5% consumer electronics failure rate?! Is it sad that I'm not nearly as pumped about the Rev now as before this announcement? The Revolution sounded fast, cutting-edge, and well, revolutionary. Wii sounds like a fictional japanese fisher price toy they would have on South Park as a long-running joke.

actually that would be fucking hiliarious if Nintendo had a press conference demo in which they render Toy Story in real time, and they say, our system is the first to actually render Toy Story in real time.
 
yup image matters. look at the gamecube. when it was launched it was purple, had a handle, was small and had a lot of safe "kiddie" games. Even though it was more powerful then PS2 and was the easiest console to develop for, the cube was left with a third place finish in this console war (by most accounts). Revolution was such a good name, or even N5... Wii??? As good old Stone Cold would say WHAT?!?!

Ok, image matters. Look at the system , look at the logo and look at the controller. All 3 things have gotten people talking.

System - VERY nice design. Looks like a very expensive piece of hardware.
Logo - To the point. "Cute". Destinctive. Animated :)
Controller - Simple. Elegant. Retro yet futuristic.

Try and say "Wii" as a name. We. Dont use a questionable conotation when said, use it the same way you'd say "Yahoo", "iPod" or "Audi"...as a noun.

"I'd like to get a We game please" as long as you arnt talking like a fucking leprachaun, you should be fine.
