Rhyming: Do Tina and Anya rhyme?

Renzokuken

CAGiversary!
My friend and I are having a little debate on this. He says the names "Tina" and "Anya" don't rhyme; I say they do because it's an assonance rhyme.

Any help fellas?

No they do not rhyme. The just end with the same letter. A rhyme would usually have to share a common syllable either literally or sound the same phonetically. Maybe they sound the same if you have a certain accent. ;)

Tina (Tee-na)
Ayna (A-ynah)

I'm no English Scholar, so take this with a grain of salt. :D

I see where you're coming from, but I think that would be like saying that Orange rhymes with Hinge, and as we know from Monkey Island, this is not the case.

You are correct, it is an assonance rhyme.

Tina, Rhonda and Anya rode in a Toyota Corolla.

- example of an assonance rhyme.

You say true. The similar ending vowel sound also qualifies as an approximate or near rhyme.

Is this for poetry or is it to be vocally delivered, such as in the case of a rap person? Because, given the right flow skill, one could make it rhyme.
