Sad news this morning: Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie fishing boat featured on Deadliest Catch, has died in Alaska. He was 53.

Harris suffered a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the Cornelia Marie was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The boat captain was flown to Anchorage for surgery.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end," sons Josh and Jake Harris said in a statement on the Cornelia Marie site. "For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down."

In a statement the network said, "Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew."

RIP Captain Phil  you'll be missed by many.

That really sucks.. I enjoyed watching that show from time to time and think about these people and other fishermen who work so hard in a dangerous job just to bring us seafood. Something to think about next time you go to Red Lobster.

Yeah RIP Phil. I love the show and he was one of my favorite people on it. I really hope they keep following the Cornelia Marie in the coming seasons, hopefully with Jake or Josh at the helm. I wonder how Discovery will handle his death seeing as how it happened right in the middle of them filming a season of the show.

Horrible news. I feel especially bad for Josh Harris. He was always Phil's "mother hen", so so speak. Always up in the wheelhouse telling him he should try to live healthier.

Dude lived a hard life that would make the average person shit their pants. It sucks that he died. Maybe he'll be reincarnated as an Orcish warchief in another universe, that'd probably suit him.

when i first read it i assumed he died from something directly work-related, and i'm glad that wasn't the case. still sad, but i'm glad he didn't go like that guy who fell off the pots.

Aw man, from the Cornelia Marie site, Greenhorn Jake Anderson (from Northwestern)'s dad went missing. They found his truck and after a week just called off the search. A bad fucking year for both the Northwestern and the Cornelia Marie.

Oh that's terrible didn't Jake's sister pass away in the middle of the season last year as well?

Same here, Phil on the Cornelia Marie then a tie between Johnathan & Andy on the Time Bandit and Sig & Edgar on the Northwestern. I'm not a huge fan on the Wizard captain but I respect him putting his life on the line ever day they fish.

I bet the whole fleet is just devastated cause it seemed like they all liked each other.

After the catch just won't be the same without Phil.

One of my favorite moments was when the Time Bandit sabotaged one of Phil's pots with the rusty old pickup truck! I believe it was retaliation for a welded pot with some garbage and dirty laundry.

The "crab fart" theory was pretty funny as well. So many great moments he had on that show.

I would say Josh would be the most likely or the guy who filled in for Phil during the blood clot (granted he didn't do too well but it wasn't exactly fair since he found out he was captain at the last moment).

According to the Discovery site, they plan on focusing on Phil and the crew. They will probably do a tribute of some type as well.

That really fucking sucks... I gotta say though, that line of work must be hard on the body. There were a few captains that weren't lookin too good and that was a while ago. Still... it just sucks. RIP.

The problem is that everyone on Deadliest Catch smokes like a freight train. I love the captains and the crew on the show, but all that smoking is going to give them health problems and kill them just like Captain Harris.

I'd imagine it's not just smoking but... stress, alcohol (not at work), eating bad food (maybe?), not a lot of sleep, no exercise. It's unfortunately a job that's hard on the body whether you're a driver or a fisherman on the boat.

I can't say I contributed to his death since I don't eat seafood at all.
