What could cause it? Food poisoning? Maybe you'll listen to me NOW when I say that there is a possibility of Melamine in candy and foods imported from China. Even if it wasn't imported it could have ingredients from china! and yes, I realize they don't say the exact cause in this article.

Edit: Linkies to more articles possibly related to this, And no, I don't "hate" China, I'm not racist I'm just concerned.

I'm guessing it's more likely just a result of massive amounts of sodium in a kid's diet, combined with not enough water.

I'm not a medical doctor.

Does sodium actually cause kidney stones? I eat a shit ton of sodium, at least 10x as much as I'm supposed to.

I thought sodium is only bad for people with blood pressures sensitive to it...

Slate, why do you hate China?

My father used to get them every few years, but it's been a while since his last one. I think it has more to do with your own body than any specific cause. My father's doctor told him not to drink so much milk.

Yea, my understanding was that it was related to organ (as opposed to muscle) based protein, excessive calcium and low levels of citric acids (drink more juice and less milk then lay off the hot dogs and bologna is the advice my friends have gotten).

Actually, a lot of new evidence points to a lack of calcium being the culprit. Calcium oxalate is the most common kidney stone cause, and research is finding that a lack of calcium causes oxalate to build up in the kidneys before binding with minute amounts of calcium(causing a stone) rather than doing it in the intestines where the calcium and majority of oxalate are absorbed.

I believe this because I see very few kids drink milk or take multivitamins. It's always soda, juice, energy drinks blah blah. On the contrary, I consume massive amounts of dairy products (old school BBing diet) and little if any juice and I've never had any kidney issues.

Interesting about calcium intake-
I knew Dr's used to jump on kidney stone patients for all meat consumption for the uric acid based ones, but now mostly focus on the reduction of organ meats. No more rework and slurry processsed meat products for you, yyyech.
only thing i can think of is ...Melamine....
That must be the cause! Forget what medical science says!
Kidney stones suck. I get them every few years. My last one was a killer.
You're not kidding. I used to work in a lab and when we got in particularly big/nasty kidney stones whoever was receiving it would look at the REQ and holler out 'pass or fail?' and we'd all make guesses.

One time we got in a stone about the size of two lentils put together and the motherfucker passed it. He must have pissed fire for six months.

Oh my god. Ouch.

I had one years ago. I thought I was going to die. I'd rather do prison time than pass another stone.

I get kidney stones all the goddamn time, its pretty much a chronic thing, every couple months or so. I've stopped drinking soda, pretty much drink nothing other than water and beer. Take multi-vitamins, watch my diet and to no avail i still get them. My doctor has run out of ideas as to what the culprit is and told me it's just something i have to live with.
