Rock music and the "art" of a remix

danjris

CAGiversary!
Recently I have had discussions about music being remixed (mainly rap songs where they add 10 other rappers to the original song (although, don't think I don't like rap because I do) and "dance" music) and one thought came into my mind...What would happen if a rock band would remix one of their songs??

This has led me to think, artists have done many collaborations but to the best of my recollection a rock song has never been remixed in a true rock tradition. And I'm not talking about an acoustic version or a "Friday Night MegaMix". So, I guess my question is this:

If you were to want a rock band to remix one of their songs, what band what it be? What song? Who would be the "guest artist(s)" on the track???

Music like this exists in the mash-up genre - where for instance they could lift the vocals off one song and put them on the backbeat of another.

Only thing is - the remixes I listen to are typically cross-genre so I don't have any good examples of rock to rock remixing. Pretty much any pop song has to be technocized before I'll hear it.

Bloc Party had their entire CD remixed and released the disc with the same track order. However, I won't vouch for the quality of any of the remixes except the Bloc Party one.

Then they would be called Nickelback.

check out the Linkin Park album Reanimation... it's amazing...

Theres also been some great Fall Out Boy remixes.

What was the point in putting the Cure's name in the title? They never did that before when taking someone else's music.

I hate the thought of hip-hop taking others music and crapping all over it with their "talents."

Last time I went to a club I heard they took a Journey song and put a technoish beat to it. Some other older 70's and 80's songs too. My girlfriend and I were shocked that this is what the "new" music being played at clubs. That will probably be the last time we go out to a club.

I'm partial to the early-90's crossover stuff, like Anthrax/PE and the resulting Judgment Night soundtrack (Ice-T + Slayer playing a Medley of songs by The Exploited FTMFW!).

If I had known what that would lead to by the late 90's, I would have never wished it on mankind, though.

I guess my definition of "true rock" isn't the same as others...my goal for this post was to see what song people would like to hear with a guest vocal by someone from another band...(Crawling - Linkin Park w/ Jonathon Davis (Korn)

And now that I think about it, I'm pretty much asking a rock song to be redone with an extra verse done by person(s) outside of the original group:whistle2:?

That's called a cover.

Bands generally don't change the lyrics in covers. Bands can't cover themselves. It's different.

As someone said already, check this out OP:

Sure they can.

Prime example: "Blinded by the Light." The Mannfred Mann and Springsteen versions have different choruses.

I tried to ninja edit it, and failed miserably.

Yeah they do. Plenty of bands change lyrics, even in a small way. Look at Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" with the line "I wear my crown of thorns."

The Judgment Night soundtrack is awesome. Faith No More and...Boo Ya Tribe, I think. Whatever, I checked it out for Faith No More, and was impressed by the whole thing.

That cover is amazing and extremely haunting.

No doubt. The only songs I don't care for are the "chill and get high" collaborations, like Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill.

It has several songs that are close to what you're describing in your post. There's a version of "Crawling" with the guy from Staind on guest vocals, a version of "One Step Closer" featuring Jonathan Davis, and a version of "Pushing Me Away" with the guy from Taproot. Plus a ton of guest rappers on the other songs.

There's also a remix of KoRn's "Here To Stay" that has a smattering of guest vocals from Mindless Self Indulgence, but that's on one of those overpriced import singles. Oh, and kind of a reverse case of what you described in your original post - there's an import single from Eminem that has Marilyn Manson doing guest vocals on "The Way I Am."

But yeah, that's just a couple of things from the top of my head. There's tons of stuff like that out there, even if you aren't counting unauthorized mashups and things like that!

I'm a big fan of Linkin Park (actually saw them last Friday in Columbus, OH...amazing) and I'm a fan of their Reanimation album. I am also a fan of KoRn.

I realize/understand that there has been many covers/collaborations/editions/remakes of songs but I still think my original post may be confusing because I didn't put into words what I was wondering. I was just trying to pick other peoples brains.

I wanted something along these lines, whether it be preexisting or one that you would like to hear. You take a general rap remix "format"

Original rap song/artist + guest artist = remix (DJ Khaled - I'm So Hood or We Takin' Over)

This is the format I was looking for of the rock song to be "remixed" (can a rock song have something called a remix, it sounds to rap/techno-ish?)

I realize I type a lot, that is probably why people don't understand me half the time:D

So more like... taking a song and using the same instrumental part, but adding extra vocalists? Rather than a reworking of both instrumentals and vocals?

Yes, same instrumental parts as original, just adding guest vocalists with a possible extra verse
