Well I just recently found out that if you are an RBC client and have a visa card through them, you earn something called "RBC Rewards". These points can be redeemed for a variety of things, most notably Future Shop gift cards. Now I was looking through all the items points can be redeemed for, but most required an insane amount of points (as is typical with these programs).

However to my surprise I found that a $25 gift certificate for Future Shop was only 3000 points. To put that into perspective, I use my visa card as little as possible (for I personally hate credit cards, but they are required to form a line of credit or buy things online) and haven't had the thing very long (less then a year). However somehow I had gained more then enough points for one of these gift cards. Obviously this made me quite happy.

Anyway just thought I'd get the word out for those who didn't know already.

PS - To access the rewards catalogue you have to have online banking setup. You will find a link in the visa section of your online banking account entitled "RBC Rewards".

Wow.
20,564 points and never even realized it.

As for credit cards, I think its okay as long as you pay it off every month. I guess if you're really organized and dedicated, you could pay all your bills every month with the thing and really rack up the points. With my visa classic, its 1 point for every $2 spent. For others its a 1 to 1 ratio.

why would u hate credit cards? if ur gonna spend money u might as well earn something on them.

I hate them because of what the credit card companies do to ensure that people will go into debt. I don't like supporting that kind of thing, but I don't really have much of a choice. I myself am always aware of what I'm spending and always pay it off promptly, I will never spend money I don't have.

I must admit though, this is a rather pleasant surprise.

because they force people to buy things they can't afford?

or in the case of an emergency, u might have some unexpected expense... but what is the alternative...

credit is a wonderful thing. and rewards are bonus.

Oh they don't force people to buy things, and I'm entirely for the whole "its the individuals fault". However CC companies literally force multiple credit cards on people in hopes that they will spend to much. They prey on the fact that some people are careless and irresponsible.

CC companies may not be the sole reason for the problem, but they are the instigators.

Its like the whole smoking issue. While its the individuals fault that they are addicted to smoking, the cigarette companies go out of their way to keep people hooked and attract new victims.

I"m with imcrazy on this one =/ The US, and I think Canadian, population have a negative savings credit. Meaning more money is being spent than earned in general.

i think thats a stretch....big tobacco and visa......out to get the general population. and how hard is it to rip up an credit card application? i personally get a bunch of applications, but they just go in the trash.

but anyways in today's society, credit is a necessity. and how hard is it to pay ur bill every month.

how else are you going to get that mortgage? or that loan?

I was using the cigarette thing as an example, I wasn't saying that the whole credit card thing is on the same level. Clearly the tobacco companies are much worse.

how else are you going to get that mortgage? or that loan?
Hence why I said, "but I don't really have much of a choice".

To be honest I don't quite understand why you are arguing with me.

Just wondering for those who have an RBC rewards visa, are any of you students? and which card do you have?

My visa applications keep getting rejected at Royal Bank On the other hand CIBC has been practically throwing credit cards at me.

I have the student Classic II visa card, and it was quite easy to get it. I just filled out a form online and a week or 2 later I was accepted. I believe rewards are offered with any visa card you get through royal bank.

I think you're right, it seems all visa cards with Royal Bank offer rewards.

I've still got the Visa Classic II (no fee whatsoever), and I've had it since I was in my first year of university. They had a place set up on campus to apply for it, pretty much everyone I knew was accepted to get the card.

And yeah, I should cash in my points too sometime, gift cards are a nice little bonus!

I'm from Europe and I can't tell you there is no such thing as CC.
I was shocked when I heard that you can spend money that you don't have on your account.
I can tell you I don't like this system too many tentation. IMO if you don't have the cash don't buy it that's it.

well i've been meaning to get a credit card so i guess now is as good a time as any, pretty much everything uses one these these, at the very least the gift cards will come in handy :)

We have Visa/Matercard card but we can't use them if we don't have the money on our account. So we don't call them credit card.
I think it's more like an interac card but you can do everything with it online payments international payments.
It's strange cause when I use my visa card in Europe I have a pin but in Canada I have to sign the receipt.

I think only big store can give you cc like yours but you can only use them in those stores.

[quote name='cliffclaven2']I was tempted with the futureshop gift certificates, but ended up going for the gas from esso.
