If anyone cares, I got Disgaea 3 (US version) a bit early... It's not complete, but so far it is ehhh... I'll try to post detailed impressions if I can bear to play through it.

I only played it about 20 or so minutes before I knocked out on Sunday. So yea, I'll definitely try to give it more loving during the weekend.
imo, disgaea 1 and 2 start to pick up in the midgame. but the beginning is sloooooooooow =( especially for d2.
Tis a shame. ToS was not just the best GC RPG but one of the best RPGs last gen period.
Amen, brother! I damn near wore out a LCD screen playing that. My wife kept running around yelling "Angel Feathers" like Collette because I'd let her hang back and spam that from long distance. Kept her out of trouble and acted like some Angelic Artillery. I'll be getting a Wii primarily for the sequel.

If none of that makes sense, I've done my job. I gotta stop drinking while I post.

Heh Iv been hella tempted to grab a Wii for the sequal too but cant bring myself to do it. Can buy another 25 $10 games at that price!
I didn't really need to level until the double-digit episodes.

I really want to unlock the Majin characters though.
majin in disgaea: :D

majin in disgaea 2:

for some reason i'm not digging ToS2. i loved the original. why they gotta continue things for some reason?

it's why i'm looking forward to vesperia though. same team as original ToS.

I really like the idea behind the story in TOS2.

"Well, you saved the world by combining the two warring realms so noone would die.............but you just combined two warring realms into one territory so what the hell do you think is going to happen!"

Didnt know that was what the story was about. Thats freaking awsome, makes me even more excited for it now!

Vesperia is going to be awesome but I'm gonna wait for the price drop. The only thing that would make me pay full price is some sort of online co-op which would be friggin awesome. I'd love for it to be a huge hit but let's face it, the majority of 360 owners are going to be playing NCAA/Madden, Halo, and Call of Duty 4. It'll be $30 or $40 before the holiday.

Even though none have been hits the 360 is turning into a bit of an RPG powerhouse. I mean its no PSX or PS2 but still Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, FFXII, Tales, Eternal Sonata. Its doing pretty damn good. Then you add in the US created RPGs and it looks even better.

Well the PS3 only has Enchanted Arms (bleh) and the Wii only has Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon, Opoona and Baroque.

So yeah, 360 is the only next-gen with a solid JRPG line up.

Aside from the lame Japanese story and girly lead, what was bad about it?

Symphonia and Abyss don't have very exciting stories, they're all about the battles.

Symphonia's story did pick up after a while, I thought...

but what bothers me is that everything about it has that been-there, done-that feeling about it. You have laughable dialog, silly situations with typical RPG archetypes, and the wooded area you explore was soooooooooo boring. Yeah, the battle system was kinda cool, but I found myself actively avoiding battles after the first 3 minutes of the demo. I just don't want to fight squirrels. It didn't help that the game has circus music playing in the background, either.

I'm hoping that a lot of these issues were only glaring because this was the very beginning of the game or something... because I went into the demo excited to see how Vesperia would be and walked away thinking that I'd probably never want to play the full game.

I agree that the games had dull enemies and need more innovation and excitment. However I thought the story of both games were great. B+ or A- easily

i haven't played the demo, but if what chac is saying is correct...

... that's the stuff tales is made of! horribly cliched story, cookie cutter characters. but for some reason i liked symphonia.

and i think it'll be fine for vesperia.

yoyoyoyoyo!!

I beat Tales of Symphonia... jus in time coz I jus got Baroque from gamefly.

seriously tho... what the hell is "mana"???

like I kno there is a Mana Knight,

and like Secret of Mana... I dont think that's like Victoria Secret?!?!

and I think back in biblical times God made bread fall from the sky and it was supposed to be like it was raining mana??

so like... is mana something you eat?? Or is it like dirt or ground or something... like a whole planet is mana??

I dont understand >_

ToV seemed like the other entries.

I enjoyed the graphics, and the battle music. Hard to tell the story from a demo, so no comment there.

Characters seemed a little annoying, but usually in tales games they take awhile to develop.

nobody knows what mana is?!?! what the heck man?!?!?!

lol Baroque sucks! I see where the game is going and it's pretty cool... but it's not fun to play
I had no problem with the Vesperia demo. It was a Tales game. It seemed the same as all the other ones, and that's fine by me.
Same here, I played it for a bit and it felt fine. I'll probably grab the game day one if my wallet allows me.

Mana is supposed to be some mystical energy, like MP.

I don't know where the Ys hate is coming from. It was only bad if you sucked at boss fights. It wasn't amazing, but it didn't kill your kids either. :/

Whatevers, I'm looking forward to Disgaea DS.

Yeah, Vesperia feels like every other Tales game, but it'd be nice if it stood out a little as being particularly good... the demo felt as humdrum as anything I've ever played though.

It's becoming almost as bad as NIS' games, and that's a terrible, terrible fate.

To be honest nothing about ToS really stood out until much later in the game. So I'm willing to give ToV a chance.

It's weird... there was just something about the pacing and settings of Symphonia that made it work, even though the story was meh. I dunno.

Who could have imagined that? I guess it is all part of Microsoft's attempt at gaining japanese market share.

Oh, I get it. Nice. You nearly had me going for a second there.
Japanese people are focused on the DS.
If by DS, you mean PSP, then yes.

I can understand that if you don't like the Tales games, but I'm a fan of more of the same. If something works, keep doing it.

Well, that's obviously not working. Not that I care, there will be plenty of RPG's to keep me busy for years.

Collected all the parts I need to play RPGs on my 360 now (elite from gamedealdaily.com, VGA and 120GB HD from GS this week). Now I just got to wait until ToV comes out. Then I'll work through the 360 RPG list until ToS 2 comes out later this year.

Are there any good 360 RPGs to recommend? All I have in mind is Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Lost Odyssey. (Mass Effect I'm playing it on PC.)

And also, FFTA2 is still as addicting. Switching off between MLB The Show 07 gives it a good mix.
It will take around 30 years of 8,000 more PSPs sold per week to catch up...
One week of sales != every week of sales.

Come now. This is a world that lives in the present. And presently, the PSP is more popular in Japan than the DS. That can change, but it seems you're grasping at straws to try and find a reason why you're right. (ur not)

I've been following the numbers for a while now (as opposed to, you know, guessing) and the PSP is doing super kawaii mega-awesome in Japan ATM. You can thank Monster Hunter for that.

This kinda thing has been exciting the editors over at Kotaku ever since it started happening, because the DS is basically one giant hotcake. But the PSP is gaining market share, and when that happens the gods of logic and clear thinking decree that it is, in fact, popular at the moment. And when it's selling more than its competitor it can be seen as more popular than said competitor.

Man. That there Valkyrie Chronicles is sure looking mighty fine. I can't wait to get my RPG on with it.

Here's some that might be worth a try, but I've never played them before:
Spectral Force 3
Operation Darkness
Enchanted Arms
Coming Soon:
Infinite Undiscovery
The Last Remnant
If these suck, remember I'm just listing them =P.

It's funny because that first paragraph can actually be used to refute your point.

Be sensible... you're absolutely correct that in time the PSP could beat out the DS in Japan. But do you really think it has that much momentum? Right now the fact is that 14 million more DS's have been sold in Japan. You were the one who used one week to prove your point.

My actual point was just that handhelds are bigger in Japan than consoles, so Japanese software companies market toward western gamers.
/resists urge to continue argument

Fair enough. Would've been nice if you had said that in the first place.
Williard is right though. The PSP may be doing really well right now but first off its not like the DS isnt doing extreamly well too. Besides that fact though is that the PSP up till these last few months really wasnt doing that well. Its like arguing you won a race because you did 5 miles in the last 10 seconds......even though your appointment may have only done 4 miles but before that 10 seconds did 20 miles!

The DS still has dominated the PSP and it is still easily the RPG machine. We will see if things change though, I think both Nintendo and Sony are reluctant to put out a new handheld so there is still time in this generation for Sony to turn things around. Kingdom Hearts should help too since the PSP version looks like a real release where the DS one is another meh title. Though the PSP even if it sells well is not selling software whcih doesnt help.

Go check the sales figures when the Dragon Quest drops on the DS. It might outsell every other console/handheld combined.

Willard was right to say that you can't use one week to predict future sales. The videogame business is way too complicated to do that.

Oh, and Operation Darkness' demo was decent. The only problem I had is that you can't let your three characters die during the mission. That was great until I got over 30 minutes into the mission and I was horribly out of position. I almost got through but one of my main guys died by a couple points. Ooops, game over. Try again. No thanks. I'll see you in the bargain bin next year.
I've been playing the hell out of some Crisis Core. Great game. I can't believe how many great RPGs are on the PSP now.
Crisis Core wasn't bad.....ended up a little dissapointed after early on being pleasently suprised. Overall a Solid B to B+ game. Im super excited for the Star Ocean 1 and 2 remakes. Id love it if Square released them together on 1 disk and made it a collectors edition only game

So I was playing Izuna 1, and I finished the Maze of Gods, and I was thinking, "fuck yeah, I beat the game"

and then I have to go through the 40-floor singularity. fucking A.

I feel like CC ran out of gas about halfway through. I had to push myself to finish it. Just a bit too repetitive, even for a portable.

I'm really digging Crisis Core right now, I'm at the part
right after Zack and Cissnei are on the beach hanging out, and then Tseng comes and sends you to go do some shit.

Yeah, I'll grant you the DS has more overall - but the PSP has less ports of old RPGs than the DS. It's easy to say there's a surplus when more than half of them have already been released on another system.

My favourite part about Crisis Core

I would take Cissnei over Aerith or Tifa any day.
