RPG Thread #4 - Just in Time for Final Fantasy IV DS

I feel like calling it Suikoden Tier Crisis. But from what I've read the story starts off with the destruction of the 108 stars. Only 4 survive and it's your duty to get them all back. It's set in the Kingdom of Salsaville (located next to the Nachos Republic.) I don't remember ever hearing of a place called Salsaville in the previous Suikodens. I'm not sure if it's a side story like Suikoden Tactics or Gaiden. I'm waiting to hear when this takes place in the Suikoden world.

Good news: it's an RPG not a strategy game. Lord knows the DS has too many of them already.
Bad news: Only 4 people in the party at a time, like in SIV.

Looks like Suikoden is using a typical MP system now as opposed to the usual 1/2/3/4 magic set up. Honestly I never liked it, so I'm glad to see this change. Also Unite attacks have been confirmed.

Hmm.... well I'm sick of strategy games, and MP just makes more sense than the typical Suikoden nonsense, so I'm happy to hear about that.

I really want to play a game in the series that strikes me as being great... so these minor things already have me more optimistic than I was about Suikoden Tiramisu.
Disgaea 2 was okay. I only liked it because Rozelle was a hottie. The post-game wasn't that fun =(
Rozelle

I actually like a numbering system for casting spells. I was kinda irked when they took it out in the FF1+2 GBA remake. And they made it super easy. -_-;

EDIT: ROZELLE holla~

She doesn't have the thunder-thighs like Priere though.

I liked Disgaea 1 and 2. So I'm stoked about 3.

After I finish Persona 3 FES in a few weeks, what should I play; Rogue Galaxy or Tales of the Abyss?

I say Abyss if you can deal with load times... it's an awesome game hampered by stupid hardware limitations.

If you want less load times but a less delicious game, go for RG.

Tales of the Abyss, I never really got into Rogue Galaxy's battle system. I hated how little control you had your your teammates AI. Really is it necessary to have my teammates have to ask me if they can do anything?

Here's another question: Tales of Vesperia or Infinite Undiscovery? I want to get one since I finished FFVI & I'm almost done with Lost Odyssey.

Apparently Vesperia is helping 360 sales in Japan, however I expect another Blue Dragon. The stores will be flooded with used 360s in a month or so. It's kinda odd but the 360 is the console for JRPGs.

Kind of hard to say with IU not being out yet. I'm getting both, so I'll compare when I do.

After Symphonia, I was soooo disappointed with Abyss. Symphonia's puzzley dungeons were awesome. I was expecting similar quality since the games were from the same team, but while Symphonia's dungeons were my favorite part, they completely disappeared in Abyss, replaced by regular old "walk from one end to the other" dungeons. Once I started having to jet around the world to have long story conversations, they kind of lost me.

Abyss isn't as good as Symphonia. Also, I know I'll get raked over the coals for this, but I liked Legendia better than Abyss as well. Abyss is still an awesome game though.

The Abyss I played had the same kind of "zap stuff and move crates" puzzles as Symphonia.

Abyss has much better color coordination than Symphonia and I like the free run ability in Abyss as well. Overall I would say the games are even.
Thought her name was Rozalin.
you're right.

it shows how much i liked the game. hahha =)

vesperia for me. not even thinking about IU.

Ummmm wow. Tales of Vesperia got DLC in Japan thats quite different then the typical costumes, weapons or characters. Instead of something cool like that you can download level ups and in game cash for those who dont want to grind for cash or levels. Crazy....but I bet people will use it!

Buying levels would be great for people that are short on time but it kind of goes against what RPGs are all about. They're called experience points for a reason.

wow, vesperia IS coming out soon.

i'm still behind on my backlog. omg a backlog, what.

i still have FES, then Blue Dragon, then Mass Effect. maybe when i'm done with them, ToV will only be $40...
Anyone know the numbers on Vesperia Premium? Should I snag a copy for collecting's sake?
We really have no way of knowing. Is it going to be Halo 3 rare or Bioshock rare?

ToV better be good, it'll be the first game I buy at launch since The World Ends With You. I've been disapointed in the Tales series for the last few years. The gameplay is fun but the the plot's always your cliche' JRPG. I'm sure ToV will be the same but I'm ready to suffer through it. I'm hungrey for RPGs right now, I just hope ToV doesn't ruin my appetite.

Blue Dragon was fun but I see what Rei is saying about the characters. Besides Zola I didn't really like any of them.

Eternal Sonata should be about 20-25 hours to complete. Add a few more hours if you want to complete the bonus dugeon.
Can anyone name some 360/PS3/PS2/DS RPGs that are relatively short in length? (ie less than 20 hours to complete)
Isn't Rhapsody for the DS supposed to be like 10 hours? But that game plays for the other team, not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's really unbelievable how well the 360 is faring on the RPG front. Microsoft would really deal a deathblow if they could get a port of Disgaea 3.

MY concern about Infinite Undiscovery is that Tri Ace's PS2 games are not as good as their PSOne games. Star Ocean 3 is no where as good as SO2. Valkyrie Profile 2 isnt as good as the original. Radiata Stories is average at best.

Hardly a deathblow at all, but it would be nice nonetheless.

Fun fact: Disgaea 3 will be published by Square Enix in Europe. I guess the game wont be too hard to find.

People have been saying that for years though. Fans of the SNES RPGs didn't like the PS1 RPGs. PS1 fans didn't like the PS2 games. Happens every console generation. People always look back with fondness and nostalgia. It's natural.

Oh, and I probably shouldn't have said deathblow if Disgaea goes to the 360. It's just that it would be another huge exclusive that went multi platform.

I agree. I don't understand why people keep bashing on how bad Valkyrie Profile 2? The gameplay and mechanics are still in tact. Is it because of harder difficulty? I thought it was pretty easy. Star Ocean Ocean 3 is different story. The AI is complete shit.
