Are there any RPGs on the horizon for Wii?

The new Dragon Warrior sounds awful from reviews and does not seem like a full game, but rather a super simplified short side game...so that doesn't count.

I still have a couple of games to play on the PS2 to hold me over, but as a primary RPG player none of the systems are looking nice right now. 360 has the upcoming Blue Dragon, which also has pitiful japanese reviews. FF13 will come eventually, but for PS3 only or 360 as well who knows. Not one single game out right now for any of the new systems seems to be a worthwhile RPG.

I really want to know if the Wii will ever get serious RPGs or if I'm going to have to eventually buy a PS3 or 360 (PS3 more likely since RPGs are a main-fare Japanese and Japanese are not buying the 360).

There's FFCC and... Camelot is supposed to be making a Wii RPG. That's all that pops up at the moment.

Nintendo also owns Monolith Soft (Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos) now so expect good stuff from them in the future.

DQ:S, while agreeably not a true RPG in the sense of what you're looking for, has received very favorable impressions.

Fire Emblem is out 11/5. Tales will be out next year, hopefully other stuff will start popping up. We'll have a better idea once stuff beyond Disgaea 3 gets announced by Atlus or NIS, see where they plan on putting their resources.

You could also look for the good cube rpgs. I don't know if you were a big cuber, but it has Skies of Arcadia Legends, Baten Kaitos 1 and 2, Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario Thousand year door.

Hell even chibi-robo, Animal Crossing or Wind Waker may fit your RPG craving.

I forgot about the Fire Emblem series, that's one I have not tried yet. It is a strategy game rather than a rpg right?

I wish they'd make a new Shining Force, SF2 was one of the best games ever done...unfortunately SF3 was not good and the subsequent spin off series have been awful.

On the gamecube...I played Baten Kaitos about halfway through before it got so repetitive and the characters never went anywhere. FFCC was...well, I won't get into that. The Tales game was decent, but every Tales game is the same and being a completionist, I got sick of them after two games for all of the extra nonsense you have to collect and I can't stop myself! Skies of Arcadia was a laughable game, the only reason I think it got so high reviews was because it was on consoles that had nothing to compare it to. I did play it all the way through and it had unique elements, but overall... And after Mario RPG, the Paper Marios have not done a thing for me. Urgh!

So I guess have I have to hope that the next FFCC is extremely different and actually thought out this time. Fire Emblem is a good possibility. I have not seen anything than a few screenshots of Opoona.

Wouldn't it be great to for the Wii to get some of the real classic/great series, like a real Shining Force, or a decent Seiken Densetsu game, Ogre Battle, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger (not Cross), Lunar, Lufia, or heck even a full fledged Pokemon game that finally takes that series in a different modern direction.

FF:CC seems to be single-player driven, so hopefully that will turn out well.

Yeah, Fire Emblem is an SRPG, along the lines of the original Shining Force games.

I feel like I plug this game s a lot, but....have you played Gladius? It's a fantastic western style RPG that keep the best feel of early RPGs like the D&D gold box games.

I never tried Gladius, that's one where I judged the book by the cover and decided it looked like a third-rate game. I considered getting it once after I saw the reviews were generally positive, but the graphics turned me off each time I looked.

Its a shame that ever since the snes, Nintendo consoles are a desert when it comes to RPG's. Hopefully now that Ninty owns Monolith that will change.

I think what happened is that RPG companies follow which console rules in Japan. The SNES ruled, then the PS1 console sold better than N64 due to numerous reasons, the PS2 continued that.

Nintendo's late arrival with the N64 and its use of cartridge and poor sales was a big reason why it lost RPGs. Now that the Wii is dominating the market in both the US and Japan, hopefully it will gain RPGs this time.

Unlike other genres of games, RPGs don't necessary have to have high end graphics...although Squaresoft loves pushing graphics further and further so I doubt we'll see a full fledged main Final Fantasy title on the Wii.

I loved Gladius. It's in a similar vein to Fire Emblem, so more strategy than RPG. If you're looking for a strong story-driven game, it may not be for you. Most of your characters will end up being random mercenaries you pick up with no discernable back-story. It's still a great game, but may not be what you're looking for.

I don't remember the graphics being bad, but it's been a while since I've played.

I'm sure we'll see more RPGs on the Wii than we did on the GC but I don't expect it to pick up for a bit the way it's selling.
