It seems Staples is wising up and rejectin g this more so YMMV
Thanks to kentallerton at FW.
I just did this. Ran out to Staples and found the last 250 GB HD between three stores. If your Staples is sold out of 200 GB HD's for $60 AR ask if they will perform a substitution. Ask them to check the substitution list or for any recent emails from corporate explaining the substitution of the 250 for the 200 GB Drive
Every Staples is different. Be polite but insistant and sure in the substitution. If they finally say no respect the managers decision. But with luck you'll walk out with a 250 GB drive for $60 and no rebates!!!!
I ended up getting the ATA/133 with an 8MB Cache but some FW's have reported getting one with 16MB of cache.
STAPLES RAWWWWKS!!!!!
Update: I finally caught up with the Fatwallet thread while I was gone. Here's what Htuttle posted.
"The Staples scanner gun (a portable device) has a 'suggested' substitute function built into it. The purpose, intent, and design (of the 'suggested' substitute function, not the gun itself) is to assist a sales rep in making suggestions to a customer “on the floor” when an item is out of stock or when discussing comparable items with the customer. IT IS NOT a corporate sanctioned planned substitute like the kind they EMAIL when a planned substitute is officially put into place.
"Obviously this hasn’t stopped a few Staples numb-skulls from looking at the 'suggested' substitute info that shows up in the gun and treating this info as here you go a 250 Gig drive for $59.99 – have a nice day ! So, it’s actually a YMMV. And depending on how you apply your version of your situational ethics, if you can find a numb-skull and chose to take advantage of them, or you just innocently fall into the deal like our OP, then good for you"
