Rush Was Punked: “Obama Thesis” Hoax

It must have seemed so perfect. An obscure blogger unearths some pages of President Obama's college thesis. The report supposedly comes from big-time journalist Joe Klein of Time magazine. And the thesis has some real gems: like Obama's disdain for the Constitution.
The whole thing was nothing more than a satirical post on a humor blog. But Rush Limbaugh, who quoted from the supposed thesis on his radio show, sure wasn't laughing. Here's how it went down.
An unknown blogger picked up on a made-up post meant as a joke, which claimed that Joe Klein had gotten his hands on 10 pages of student Obama's college thesis. Rush Limbaugh jumped on it, which immediately sparked Web searches on "obama thesis."
Supposedly titled "Aristocracy Revisited," the excerpt revealed the president had "doubts" about the "so-called founders." Juicy. Except not true. Limbaugh discovered halfway through his show that he'd been had, but defended himself by saying basically the thesis felt true. Listen in to Rush's mea sorta culpa.
Joe Klein finally jumped in, and called the report "nonsense" on his Swampland blog, and the blogger who thought the hoax was real also apologized.
Let's hope someone kept their sense of humor in all this. Still, for a humble post to go from humor blog to major media outlet sure seems impressive. Someone ought to write their thesis on it. For real.

All this, after he whined on WSJ about all the people who attributed fake quotes to him during the Detroit Lions fiasco...what goes around comes around eh?

lol even after he was mentioned like, 3 times in the article?

it's alright, I get messed up sometimes too when I haven't slept in a while.

I think it's funny that his defense wasn't really a defense. He didn't apologize for fact-checking it by saying he believed that's what Obama really believes.

In that case, nobody should apologize for attributing fake racist quotes to Rush, since its reasonable to think Rush probably does believe James Earl Ray is a hero.

For someone who supported shredding the Constitution as frequently as he has over the last __ years it's hysterical to see him howling about someone else doing the same thing. Allegedly or not.

I have a weird Twilight Zone moment whenever O'Reilly, Beck or Hannity say the same kind of stuff.
It's been a strange day. I somehow skimmed the second paragraph. Including the bit where is name is highlighted in orange.
Pfft. Don't make excuses for your Canadacentric bias. "Ooh, Geddy Lee this; Michael J. Fox that. And let me tell you a little something about Sir Sanford Fleming, Canadian inventor of Standard Times Zones ..." I'm sick of it. When will you back-bacon eaters remember that America isn't just your more dangerous, dirtier, less healthy satellite to the south? We have a culture too, and the only acceptable thought when somebody hears "Rush" is obviously a fat, uneducated, drug-addled, racist broadcaster, not some high-pitched, nerdy prog-rock, end of story. I await your apology (payable only in Canadian dollars -- ours are a little anemic at the moment -- or nekkid pictures of Canadian sexpot Elisha Cuthbert).
...

It took me way longer than it should have to realize that you weren't talking about the band.
Same thing I was thinking.

Which turned out to be legitimate whines. Where was your thread about that, btw? Not fair and balanced?

You'll get your reparations on November 3, 2009 and no sooner.

You're lucky -- I had a ticket to Edmonton and a "40 XP and a mule" protest sign ready to go.

Wow, I don't recall ever calling myself fair and balanced. This is my opinion of what happened, and Rush is a hypocrite for what he did.

Just because a network calls themselves fair and balanced, doesn't mean they are. Take a look at Fox's coverage of the tea parties + 9/12 (which they practically sponsored) versus the gay march on washington on 10/11 is evidence enough.

I'm assuming you got the phrase 'fair and balanced' from Fox btw. Lemme know if you got it elsewhere.

Congratulations, you've just won the award for "Most obscure reference that no Canadian would ever understand without Wikipedia's help".

Unfortunately, you've also won the award for "Most obscure reference that no Canadian would ever understand without Wikipedia's help. Also, Edmonton is not in Saskatchewan, so that wouldn't effect me."

But, see, Bioware's in Edmondton, and ... crap. It sounded better in my head.

Most of the quotes were real. The bloods and crips one was real. The Donovan McNabb getting special attention and accolades just because he was black was real. Those were the only ones that ESPN and the other large outlets reported about. There are actual clips of him saying those things. I remember the uproar about the McNabb quote.

Rush put his foot in his mouth again but I'm sure he'll turn it into free publicity and more advertising and book money.

Rush hasn't written a book since "See I Told You So". Exposing his target audience to something other than the Bible might convince to read even more and we know never improved anybody.
Hell, we all know most of them haven't even read the Bible. Otherwise, they wouldn't be so hateful all the time.
True. Most have been read selected verses to reinforce loyalty.

However, they may be tempted to read other books if they start buying them.

I'm actually planning on buying Sarah Palin's book. Hopefully it'll sell a lot of copies and she'll get the idea that she should run for president as soon as possible. Sarah Palin running in 2012 = President Obama for another 4 years. Show me why I'm wrong.

Why don't you show me why you're right?

No no no, this is the Glenn Beck style of accusing someone of something and then the burden is on them to disprove it. See his Obama has a hatred for white culture comment. By the way, google 'glenn beck 1990' for more.

Also, Rush Limbaugh eats black babies.

Rush, I have my cell phone next to me and I've sent you my cell phone number. Give me a call when I say something that isn't factually correct, ok? Thanks. Back in a second.

Let's talk about all the socialist/communist propaganda in the NBC building that was designed nearly a century ago, and then tie that into the Obama administration, shall we?

Aw, someone's been drinking the Fox News kool-aid! Cute.

Despite claiming that 'the spin stops here', O'Reilly sure loves having king of spin Karl 'turd blossom' Rove on his show.

I love how those crafty 'liberals' have been baiting the right with these false snippets. The fake Kenyan birth cert comes to mind too.

Only the right can claim actual Rush quotes are liberal attempts to bring him down. All the quotes I heard were actual quotes that have been talked ad nauseam on sports talk shows, ESPN, and other talk shows.

Right. The claim is, by many, that Rush is racist. None of the quotes that can be found and actually presented prove that claim. That's the point.

The two I often heard bandied about in the actual news media (i.e., not blogs) a few weeks back when Limbaugh was part of the group bidding for the Rams were backed up with audio clips.

1) His infamous racebaiting quote on Donovan McNabb

2) Likening NFL games to watching "Bloods versus the Crips."

If you believe those are not indicative of racist sentiment, I implore you to explain to me how they are not. I believe the first to be racially divisive just like you claim Jeremiah Wright's selected quotes are, and I find the second to involve the use of racially loaded language (naming specific black gangs) in the process of criticizing a sport where the majority of athletes are blacks. So if you can explain to me how I'm wrong, and incorrectly thinking Rush has armed himself which racist rhetoric and used the racial rhetoric, that would be great.

Since I'm not talking about things Rush did not say, and instead referring to quotes that he most certainly did say.

rush limbagh works for the same people Obama dose

he is just there to keep this false left right paradigm The elusion of choice that we supposedly have in this country

Use your elusion!

EDIT: Okay, that was low, even for me.

EDIT2: Thanks a lot, mods. Now this post has no context. I'd delete it, but... Tony Wonder.

I'm guessing many posts got deleted but the two main quotes illustrate the very least a racial animosity by Rush.

Then the Obama thesis gets swept under the rug by him saying that it "sure sounded like Obama".
