Was told today that the place she is working at will be closing up for good come JULY 4... After working there for 34 years she is starting to flip out wondering how the hell is she going to have enough money to live.... The main reason the company folded was that GM pulled all of their contracts due to the bankrupt.

Yea a bankrupt GM is good for everyone ..... Funny thing is now when GM does make money the goverment will get the money since they NOW owne 65% of the company.. Yea give the money to the goverment instead of giving to the companies who just got really Ripped up the ass by the bankrupt.
you mom has 34 years of experience... do you REALLY think she'll have trouble finding another job?
As long as her child doesn't reflect her, I would presume now. I must say though, something has gone horribly wrong with his birth, or I never wish to meet his family.

If she works in the auto industry I'm going to say no amount of experience will help you get a job right now.

GM's problems effect more than just auto workers. I saw a story about a factory that made safety goggles possibly going under because their primary client was GM.

Your mom doesn't get a pension or anything? At least she might be able to work for Marvin for a while (an all-too-familiar joke among GM employees).

"Funny thing is now when GM does make money the goverment will get the money since they NOW owne 65% of the company."

Not really. The money the government makes off GM is seen as loan repayment. I guess I just don't find any comfort in the fact "the people" own GM now because our representatives are bigger fuckups than the GM execs.

I'm sure like Ford and Chrysler GM also has people that inspect and rework wiring harnases. Thats what I did for some time only I was a temp and now the place from what I hear reworks only the Ford ones and that isn't often and warehouses the ones for Chrysler. I'm sure the warehouses that did the same for GM are going to be shutting down some time soon if they have not already. It is not a good time to work in the auto industry.

what a stupid thing to say

theres so many people unemployed, MANY of them with alot of work experience....yes some of them are finding jobs but theres only so many jobs to fill, and a lot more unemployed people then there is jobs right now

my uncle got laid off for 90 days a few months ago because his job did something for Chrysler

i don't really like him....but i don't like the idea of someone who needs to feed his family being laid off. so yep. that's life right there.

hopefully she's at retirement age and can just live it up. if not, hopefully she'll find something

Slidecage is so much more than a bunch of unintelligible posts. There's a human side to him as well. Cut him some slack, wish his mom good luck, and pray to god his car breaks down soon or the mailman runs over his pokemon cartridge again so we get at least 3 slidecage threads in one weekend.

Shouldn't be much of a problem if your mother has been saving and investing alright. Of course, I don't know her personal and financial situation so I can't say much.
After 34 years in the auto industry, can't she retire?
yeah but with things how they are do you think shed get all of her benefits? sorry about your mom losing her job. with them closing al these companies everyone who works for gm should get a new car at the very least.

The sad fact is that these jobs....manufacturing....are gone and will not come back.

GM was punished by the market for providing jobs with superb benefits and good pay. Look at who is failing right now....companies are failing in direct proportion to how much of their manufacturing is done in the USA. Fiat, with no US presence, is doing relatively fine whereas, US ONLY Chrysler is finished. GM spends twice as much paying health care for retirees than it does in actual labor.....current labor costs only amount to between 7 & 11% of GM's cars cost.

American manufacturing is crippled by a health care system that costs too much, and no support whatsoever for labor, from government. Look at the difference in stimulus bills between the USA and China.....the US money can be paid out to any company, but China's recent stimulus is limited to domestic companies (IN CHINA).

It's very likely your mom is going to have to find a new career, and that career will be drastically different. Manufacturing jobs will not come back. Statistically, she's going to make less and have far less in the way of benefits. That's harsh, but that's likely....and I can only imagine how that reality hurts when you have 30+ years doing the same thing.

It's also very likely that many people in your mom's situation won't find a job for a very long time. Many (especially those 50+), probably won't work again. There are no more bubbles to base the economy on - real estate is dead and I don't see a tulip bulb or railroad or tech boom pending. The massive deficits that Republican President's have ran up since Reagan are all coming due now.....now in a downturn where we MUST spend to keep the wheels turning.

Since our economy is somewhat planned and we know many won't be working to support free trade and other policies that favor the rich -- society will be forced, as a moral and ethical committment, to provide a safety net. Hopefully your family can take advantage of that, at least until she can find work again.

Long term....Vote Democrat. Read a recent book from Paul Krugman if you want to understand the economy and why it is where it is, and where it needs to go.

Good luck....
And every one of your posts makes me angry at your ignorance.

It's a sad thing slidecage is talking about. Yes his delivery could be better, but hard-working working-class people do not deserve to be run out of jobs due to poor management decisions, out-of-control American executive bonuses, and crises brought on by corrupt collusion of bankers and politicians. They certainly don't need some know-nothing ivory tower college kid kicking them while they're down.
w/e man, this is funny:

You're an idiot. Nuff said.

Hope things work out for her Slidecage. That really sucks man.

think health insurance is bad look at Cobra (no this has nothing to do with G I JOE : )

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1508773/obama_stimulus_package_65_cobra_premium.html

you might be eligible for reduced premiums in which the federal government will reimburse employers 65% of the COBRA premium and charge you only 35% of the COBRA premium. In many cases, this means the difference of you paying $245 - $280 per month instead of $700 - $800 per month for your health insurance coverage while you are unemployed

I'm sure Koggit resents you calling him a collegiate. He doesn't want us to think he's older than he is or we might actually start to set standards for him.

I'm very sorry your mom lost her job. My mom works in manufacturing and thankfully they've only cut down on hours/raises instead of closing up shop altogether. Thankfully mine is 63 so if she lost her job, she'd be fine for the most part. Hope your mom recovers ok.

If he didn't have that snotty know-it-all attitude I'd let it slide, but when someone is a prick and they're wrong, well I can't let that stand.
