Samsung 40inch HDTV thoughts?

I seen a 42" vizio LCD for only $797 at Wal-Mart. Even if you aren't in the market for a Vizio, $1000 is still a bit over-priced. I think you could find a better deal.

How close are you gonna be to it? Below ~46" it's sort of hard to justify 1080p unless you're gonna be pretty close

That TV looks good though, definitely worth paying $150 more than a Vizio
Yes big difference. 8ms is basically bare minimum so you don't get ghosting. 4 ms is a lot better.
The big question would be if its worth it to pay an additional $300 for the 8ms v 4ms set + a few extras

If your doing a ton of gaming on it then it might be.

The one that's $150 more has, more importantly than improved response, improved contrast... contrast is pretty much the most important spec next to resolution. 40k:1 vs 20k:1 is worth $150, imo. But it all depends on your budget. Either is fine, 20k:1 is perfectly respectable.

I don't think you'll notice too much of a difference between 8ms and 4ms, honestly. 8ms is plenty fast. Then again, I don't watch sports (which is supposedly where fast response shines).

That's a great deal for that model especially since it has 120 hertz. I have the next model down from that one (the 4061F) which I love. So yeah go for it.

To original post's TV is totally worth it. The 4071 would be slightly better if you can find it for close to that price. You'll fucking love a Samsung HDTV as long as you get this model or higher.

Good TV for a Bedroom for sure. For my living room I'd never go back to anything under 50". Have a 50" in their now and wish it was bigger!

As for which of the models to go for, if you will use it a ton (i.e. you live at home/with roommates and thus it would be your main TV), then the $150 for the better contrast and response time is worth it. If it's a secondary TV (just use it when the girlfriend/wife is watching the main set) that won't get a ton of use then I'd go with the cheaper model.

Samsung is the sweet spot between high quality and low price. There are only three or four brands I'd recommend, Samsung is definitely at or near the top of the list.

@ Koggit: Its actually a $350 difference which is the main reason i'm still debating about which TV to get.

@ Demolition Man: Have you experienced any problems with ghosting or lag while gaming on your TV. And what do you think of the 120Hz feature?

I will also like to add that I recently returned a 720 40 inch 3 series Samsung set back to walmart and absolutely loved it but had paid to much for it. I honestly didnt notice any problems with my games and it was an 8ms set. I also do not play games too much. I am currently only playing and loving Left 4 dead and GOW2 but other than that nothing much do to school.

Thanks for all the responses so far guys

don't waste your money on a 1080p that small...you wont be able to see the difference. 720p is more than good enough for a 40 inch tv unless you are sitting a foot away from it.
@ Demolition Man: Have you experienced any problems with ghosting or lag while gaming on your TV. And what do you think of the 120Hz feature?
My 4061 doesn't have the 120Hz feature. Haven't had any lag/ghosting issues with my 4061 either. The 120Hz feature really does help quite a bit with making the motion look a bit more fluid compared to 60Hz. Especially with stuff shot on film such as movies. That's where 120Hz really shines at the most.

Well the price went up a bit on the A630 set, so in true cheap ass fashion I will probably get the 4069fx set instead and get the extended warranty. I did some research on the AVS forums and found out that if my set gets replaced, they will most likely replace it with the A630 since the 4069fx are discontinued and basically the older version of that set.

Cnet and Consumer Reports suggest that you skip the extended warranty. I agree with them. Don't buy a warranty.

oh man, is it just me or does watching a blu ray action movie on a 120hz set make you queasy? I love how computer animated stuff looks but live action movie look weird to me. I have yet to see how games look, any first hand reports? oh and can you switch between 60 and 120 hz on those sets?

Why would you skip the warranty?

It's a beautiful TV. If I had the money I would buy it - plus, Sammy makes a great product!

But, let me suggest you take a look at this:

it'll cost you more than repairs. lcd's and plasmas only have a 3% fail rate, dlp's are more like 16%, according to consumer reports. warranties are just pure profit for stores.

I own the LNT4069FX. I love the matte screen for my bright house, a glossy screen would drive me nuts (the 71 model has a glossy screen). It's a beautiful picture, but suffers from occasional stutter and motion blur even with the 120hz/AMP. I think it's worked out of the new models, though. If you're set on only spending $1000, get the LN40A550. you don't get the 120Hz, but i don't think it's as noticeable as hdtv companies want us to believe, you do get 30,000:1/5ms though which is great for $1000 (spent $1600 a year ago on my 4069fx). 1080p is overkill for anything under 50" but it's all the contrast,ms,etc. that comes with a high end 1080p set that's worth it.

My bottom line advice to anyone buying a new HDTV is to buy up. Spend the extra couple hundred bucks for all the bells and whistles for a tv you'll have for at least five years probably. If I were you, I'd buy the LN40A650. It's actually $20 cheaper than the 630! It's more tv too with 50,000:1/4ms! If you're already spending $1000, what's another $268, ya know?

Samsung IS the best LCD on the market right now, no one beats them.

I agree 100%. I just bought a 46 inch Samsung A650 and WOAH! Its a damn good LCD. Read the reviews on it. SUPERB picture and the features are excellent.

Yea samsung tends to be a good name. Also, you might try to look in some of the ones that sony offers though I think they are a little overrated. Hope you find what you are looking for!

I bought the Samsung 40" 1080p LN500 tv for $799 last Sunday at Best Buy, and I'm totally in love with it. Playing my 360 on it looks pretty damn fine. :)

Totally can't go wrong with a Samsung. My brother has the higher grade 46" in his room, and it's gorgeous.

I've been hunting and passed on SHARP and Philips TV's recently. I think I'm about sold on getting a Samsung.

Can anyone help me find the best price? Looking for 40 to 46". 1080P. 120hz preferred but not a dealbreaker.

Please help? Thanks.

I just bought the LN40A550 last night from Circuit city for 999.00 plus tax. I could have got it a little cheaper on Amazon, but I wanted it right then. It is a great TV for the money and consumer reports gave the 550 the top pick in 40" class. I just looked and the price has went up to 1099 at CircuitCity.com so amazon is your best bet.

I had to make this decision a little over a month ago. It was more of a decision between 37 and 40in due to the limitations of my bedroom. If you are looking for a deal, I think cashback is the way to go. I picked up my LN37A550 off of ebay for $750 shipped, and that was before those black friday "deals". Honestly, 120hz is going to cost you a lot more but if you're interested in sports then it's a decent investment. Just realize that if you shell the extra cash now, it's going to be more depressing when they become the standard later-

Well so far haven't pulled the trigger on a tv yet, but I can wait till at least Christmas time. I'm hoping I can come across an LN40A650 for $1200 shipped or an A630 for a little less than that, ive just been too busy with finishing up up some school projects and getting ready for finals. However, when I do get my new set ill make sure to post a blog about it.
Why would you skip the warranty?
Unless its an extension on the manufacturers warranty BY the manufacturer its usually a massive joke. 99% of the time extended warranties run concurently with the manufacturers warranty, which is just wasted money, and then if something does go wrong it gets sent off to some random company outsourced for warranty repairs. Most likely you'd then be contacted telling you they cant help you, the repair "isnt warranty", or to simply take a hike. They also dont tell you about hidden costs that may be added on later such as shipping or parts/labor because something wasnt covered. Suffice it to say, extended third party warranties are a joke.

If you're going to have a problem it most likely will be in the first 30 days which will allow you to do an in store swap anyway.

just keep checking amazon. that's where I got mine. I don't know if you have Fry's, but they're usually same price if not cheaper in-store than amazon too. amazon has free shipping and best prices.

yeah, they'll probably dip a little lower for christmas. Like i mentioned before though, i paid $1600 for mine a year ago, so $1268 for the LNA40650 ,a much better tv, is a steal! Hit up Fry's in-store, I saw my tv for only $20 more than amazon the week after i bought it, they're ridiculously cheap in-store for tv's.

By the way, i see you're in the I.E. i grew up in Lake Elsinore, where you at?

yes you can easily switch between the 60 and 120hz feature. U can even run them side by side with split screen to see the difference.

I live in Highland which is about 45 minutes north of Lake Elsinore and right next to redlands and san bernardino. Thanks for the advice, Ill keep my eyes on amazon and frys for the next couple of weeks.

That's the AMP you can turn on and off, the tv's constantly running at 120Hz. The AMP can just be heightened. It does look better high for movies, but for sports it has to be turned off to avoid TBE, sucks. Still love the tv though, everyone that comes over drools over it once i pop in Transformers in HD. :D

idk what model ur referring to but the samsung that I have ( idk model number) allows for the feature to be turned off because I turn it on only for Saturday and Sunday footbal maybe im
Mistaken tho

OP, use this chart to find the correct size screen that you'll want for your room. You said you'd be 6-8 feet away from the screen, so it looks like (for the best benefit) you'd want to set your sights in something between 42" - 56". Fry's had a 46" Samsung yesterday (expired now), so you can get bigger/better while staying within that $1,000 mark.

I have a LNT4069FX. Mine can be turned up or off, or put in demo mode too, but even though it says 120hz on/off, what it's really displaying is the AMP feature. The tv will always refresh at 120Hz, it's the Auto Motion Plus that adds the effect we've come to love/hate. I turn mine off for the sunday game because the ball gets really bad TBE, i crank it up for movies though because it adds depth and looks amazing.

Ok guys I am in a pretty tough predicament and need advice on what to do. So the other day I pulled the trigger on the $950 LNT4069FX set, thinking I can cancel the order If I changed my mind. However, I paid with my amazon credit card which only has a $900 credit limit. So I contacted Amazon and told them about this and told them that I wanted to cancel the transaction to avoid any problems. They just said that the card should get declined and that I will get an email allowing me to either pay with another card or cancel the transaction.

Here's the problem, today I get an email saying that the TV has been shipped from Nevada. So next I check out my credit card online statement and see that I have a balance of 0. So how the hell did they ship the tv out without me being charged for it yet? I'm guessing Ill be charged for it later but I only had a $900 credit limit, so how does that work out?

chances are they verified the card and issued a pending charge. Its not uncommon for the item to ship before it shows up on your statement.

And im sorry to say this but you'll most likely get hit with a small fee [probably between $15-$35] for exceeding your limit as well as additional interest charges on the balance. Hope you can pay it off sooner rather than later. Most CC companies do not decline charges that exceed the limit precisely so they can ding you with additional charges and get more money out of you.

You can always RTS the package and get a refund but you'll probably be left with that fee, in which case you can make a phone call and ask them to remove it. Most will as a one time thing.

On the otherhand if you really wanted it, well then you got it.

Has anyone tried Ebay cashback with a Samsung TV?

I was thinking of getting maybe the LN37A550. I've been looking around for a while, and I think 37" is the sweet spot for me, but I have a hard time justifying spending $900+ for one.

If you do the gold box trick on amazon you can get it for $850 shipped. Check out the first page of this thread for any further info. http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=780869

GOLD BOX TRICK

************************************************** ************************************************** ***************************************
To get a TV in your gold box, you can try this which works well

• Sign up for a new Amazon account with a new email address. Use your real name.
• Search for the TV you want (Example - Samsung LN32A450)
• Scroll down until you see "What do customers ultimately buy after viewing this item?"
• Click on the Samsung DVD-1080P8 1080p Up-Converting DVD Player.
• On the Samsung DVD players page scroll down until you see "Rate This Item to Improve Your Recommendations" Check the "I own it box" AND Give it a 5 star rating.
• Go to your Gold Box/Today's Deals.
• If you are interested in other Samsung models, leave this Amazon account untouched and check your Gold Box daily. Amazon switches up your Gold Box daily.
(REPS GO TO ZNUTZ FOR THE ABOVE SUGGESTION)

OR

You can log into your account, go to improve recommendation and make sure that nothing you have bought is used for recommendations. Search for the tv you want (Example Samsung LN32a450) and down the page you'll usually find a couple of Samsung warranties you can click on them and down the page you can rate them or just click that you own them. This should work to get some tv's in your Gold Box/ Todays deals page.

There are many variations on how to get certain things in your gold box, this is just a couple of ideas. (IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD YOUR IDEAS OR MORE EXAMPLES THAT WOULD BE GOOD - CWMICH)

Just got done earlier calibrating my Samsung LN40A540. Ton's of work to get it just right and now the picture is even more amazing. :D
