Do you get huffy when people call Pan's Labyrinth a movie instead of "una pelicula"? Anime are cartoons, graphic novels and manga are comics. And I'd give better odds to Bugs in a fight.

To answer the other part of the other guy's question---DMC was boring trash, and you shouldn't waste your time. Stick with S7. Also, Samurai Champloo was quite enjoyable if you haven't had the chance.
Anime = Japanese Animation..
Cartoons are American.

Samurai 7 was insanely good. I wish they had season 6. I've got 1-5 already. Damn it.

In Japan, all animation is called "anime." They're still cartoons, like it or not.

Eh. I know, but I consider anime to be the anime that we know and love and cartoons to be Tom and Jerry,Bugs, Duck Tales, etc.
That review is insane... I have seen a friends copy and it is a definite upgrade over the DVDs.

This review is far more accurate: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Samurai-Champloo-The-Complete-Series-Blu-ray-Review/6686/
I have to agree with this. I bought the Champloo set last week and have watched over half of it. Looks great to me. I've seen better anime on Blu-ray, but it still looks great.

Unfortunately, I picked up the Samurai 7 set from amazon.com the day before this was posted :/

Some really nice prices in there. Too bad I already own most of the good stuff on that list.

thanks to everyone who commented on DMC. saved me some dough. i tried to pick up Champloo but they were out at the store and doesnt come up on the website anymore either.

Buy the one here, and return the other one to Amazon.

It amazes me how the Champloo Blu Ray set has been on sale at Amazon for $45 and now here for $25 while the non-BR set's lowest price hasn't dropped below $40. Also, anyone who doesn't have Gungrave and/or Black Lagoon should definitely take advantage of these prices. This is almost as good as BB's Media Blasters sale.

ok... so I have only watched limited Anime things...

I loved Cowboy Bebop... thought Death Note started great and fell flat on it's face by the end, and enjoyed Witchblade but would like more substance than that. I like the grittier movies... Tekken Kinkreet, Akira. Would I like any of this stuff that's on sale?

Are these new to the thread?

Gunslinger Girl season 2 set for 21.99, One Piece Season 2 for 19.99.

Also there's apparently a lot of UMDs that dropped to 2.99. If anyone cares.

Gungrave, Samurai Champloo, and Black Lagoon are the on the list of shows that usually get recommended to newbies.

Gungrave is one half mob story and one half monster of the week. However it manages both pretty well, and if you don't like one the finale more than makes for the weak parts. If you liked the episodes about Spike's involvement with the mafia then you'd probably like Gungrave

Black Lagoon is sort of a homage to all action movies. It has huge explosions, excessive cursing, plenty of guns, and awesome characters. Pretty much everyone with a name that appears for more than one episode is likeable at worst. It is about the Lagoon Company taking jobs from various clients in the city of Roanapur; most are mob bosses, weirdos, or in one case, complete psychopaths. It also has some good character development, at least compared to others in the genre. Unlike Bebop, most of Black Lagoon's episodes are divided into 2-3 episode arcs(the last one is about 5 IIRC). However, only season 2 is on sale (episodes 13-24). You'll miss a lot of interactions between the two characters "Rock" and "Revy." and you'll also be wondering why so much time is spent talking about them. I recommnend getting the season anyway since it's so cheap and watching the first 6 episodes. If you like it try to get the first season before watching the episodes before they go to Japan.

Samurai Champloo is by the same guy who made Bebop. Pretty much you replace the sci-fi elements with feudal japan and the jazz music with hip hop. While there is one main goal throughout the show, there is more emphasis on one shot stories(think Toys in the Attic, Pierrout Le Fou). Very good as well.

Another Gamestop screw-up, that Gunslinger Girls 2 pic is for the OVA, not the Il Teatrino series set.

you guys sure that the champloo is blu? Looking for some confirmation before I make the drive to the closest GS with it in stock. I called and the guy said its DVD, even though he did not look for the actual copy and just cheked on his computer, and as well all know the website says DVD, but in teh description it says blu and shows a pic of blu.

Thanks

I'll let you know tomorrow when my copy arrives.

Sorry for flooding the boards, but, I figured I might as well post this for those interested in learning if this is champloo blu or champloo dvd.

At my gamestop its the DVD copy. Still a great deal as aforementioned. The guy said there is the possibility of GS's stocking blu ray, but this one is the dvd version.

If it is indeed the DVD version for Samurai Champloo, do you think it's worth keeping at 24.99? I mean, that's still cheaper than anywhere else.

IMO is very worth it, I have never seen Samurai Chaploo series for that price.

Heck yes. The Blu is just an upscaled, DNR'd mess, anyways.

Apparently GS found out about the Blu-ray case in the Samurai Chaploo page so now its just plain DVD case.

Well if my copy (which is getting delivered today) comes as the DVD version of Champloo, if someone wants to buy it for $32 shipped ($27 [price I paid] + $3~4 [shipping + tracking] + $1~2 [time + gas]), PM me.

Otherwise, it's getting returned.

Gamestop changing the description on Samurai Champloo too. 1st i got Samurai 7 on DVD set yesterday and i my buddy got BLU RAY version (really Pissed) and now if i get Samurai Champloo on DVD set again this week i will be really really PISSED OFF. It's time to call GS customer service for complain ......possible free $10 off voucher ;)

I don't understand why you guys wouldn't want to keep the DVD version of Samurai Champloo, given that it's still a killer price, and that the Blu-ray version sucks.

I went to the store and I bought DMC and went to BB to price match Samurai 7. I bought Samurai Champloo from Amazon like a week ago. I think its pretty good. Here is a review of Samurai Champloo from Blu-ray.com if anyone wants to see what a review is of it. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Samurai-Champloo-The-Complete-Series-Blu-ray/6686/
I also bought some other blu ray movies: Freedom (Anime-Bestbuy $100), Hurt Locker $25 BB, and Wanted $20.

Note: I dont own the DVD version I can care less if they looked the same I just wanted the series.

I remember reading something that stated the original Geneon release was superior to the Funimation re-releases. Something got flubbed up in transition.

From what I remember hearing, FUNimation DVNR-d the Blu-Ray release to death.

One would think they would have learned their lesson after the fiasco that was "remastered" DragonBall Z, but here we are.

so since I cant get Sam 7...

in its place should I get Shigurui, Gungrave or Witchblade.

I guess I will bite on Champloo, assuming its still in stock when i go

I'd go with Gungrave, but Witchblade is also entertaining. Steer clear of Shigurui unless you enjoy gore porn.

I am absolutely pissed. So not only did I wait to long for Samurai 7. I went there and the inventory said there was one samurai champloo. The guy somehow couldn't find it. There is no way it went missing. They were like hmmm, weird, I just pulled it out today. It was so obvious they were holding it for their friend/co-worker.

I am heated. Oh well. So I ended up getting Gungrave and Afro Blu. Weaksauce.

If anyone is interested in dmc, big lots sells vol 2 and vol 3 for 3 bucks a piece. These are for the dvd version. I haven't found vol 1 yet but I don't need since it's included in my dmc 4 collectors edition.

All these upset people on here is the reason why I didn't order from them online and had BB price match it for me. Got DMC Blu-Ray, and I'm going to try to get Samurai 7 next week if it's still on sale.

My S7 arrived as BLU RAY earlier his week! YAY. missed delivery of my SC so not sure what it is yet, but I want blu ray, since I got the original box set (red one) for like $25 from walmart years ago! still one of the best price mistakes I ever got :)
