I want to finally make a decision on Samurai Shodown V, but I'm really not sure if it's any good after reading some reviews. I know that Gamespot and IGN typically write for the mainstream which would explain the review scores, but how did people who know fighting games feel about Samsho V?

If you love 2D fighters or the SS series, it's entertaining enough. That being said, it's still one of the worst in the series. The Xbox version is a straight port of the year-and-a-half old PS2 port (only released in Japan), and the PS2 port wasn't that great to begin with (cut animation, sloppy feel). And the original game is one of the worst SS games - SSIII and SSV are the lowlights of the series. The game uses recylced sprites AND backgrounds from SSIV, a game made in the mid-90s. Game system feels like a step backwards from SSIV, and some features like the rage explosion are simply badly implemented.

An aside - SNK actually didn't develop SSV/Zero themselves, instead letting development house Yuki do the game. While they made some new characters that aren't terrible, the gameplay simply isn't as good as the previous game. SNK saw some potential in the game though (and the chance for more money), and tweaked SSV when they made SSV Special, a much more polished game.

Xbox specific info:
- the only significant new feature for the Xbox version (over the PS2 port) is that it does have online play, but I imagine the online scene has largely dried up by now (and most people who played when the game was new resorted to cheesy boss tactics anyway).

- the sound/language options are odd to say the least. If your Xbox system is set to English language, the win quote text is in English and you get a HORRIBLE redone English announcer. It's atrocious. If your system is in Japanese you get the very good Japanese announcer (just like the Neo version). However, you also get Japanese text for win quotes. There is NOT an option to have Japanese voice and English text, and you have to change system settings to even get Japanese instead of the much more logical game option.

- oh, the box/manual lied. There are NOT additional secret boss characters. The original plan was to include the bosses that SNK added to the Neo/arcade SSV Special - which was a BIG improvement over original SSV, by the way. That got nixed for the home port.

Essentially, if you think even a bad SS game is better than most games (like me), you'll get your money's worth. It's a little ugly even as Neo Geo ports go, it's got some flaws, but it plays pretty well. Bosses can be cheesy as anything (Sankuro and Gaoh are the main culprits) but when you learn their tricks they are beatable.

One final note - the Japan only PS2 port of SS Tenkaichi (the NEW Atomiswave-based SS game) is absolutely freakin' fantastic. By far my favorite game released this year. Every SS character ever, tons of "grooves" (to use Capcom vs. SNK terminology), control is more responsive than ever for a SS game. It's a truly great fighter. If you enjoy 2D fighters and have access to a PS2 that can play imports, you NEED this game. Honestly, even on Xbox I'd recommend KOF Neowave over SSV. Supposed to come out this week. It's cheaper AND a better game. Though if you prefer the SS mood, it's understandable. Neowave also is essentialy a tweaked KOF 2002, so if you've already played 2002 to death you might think it's too much of the same thing.

Hope that helps ya. If you can't tell, I'm quite interested in the SS series and glad to share what I know. I've played every version of SSV extensively - Neo, PS2, Xbox, and SSV Special and I'm pretty confident I know them well.

Jeese... those 2 paragraphs completely talked me out of the game. As for Neowave, yep, already got that earlier today... I'm on an SNK high right now I suppose, but I don't know where to get my next fix if SSV kinda sucks... is Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi or KOF 94 Rebout any good then? I'm trying to find my next fix, but I have no idea where to go next.

Those first 2 paragraphs completely talked me out of Samsho 5. But yeah, Tenka sounds awesome. I'll probably end up getting that soon. Eh, as long as I'm asking about SNK games, how was KOF 94 Rebout? I've got Neowave and KOF 2002/2003 but I haven't played any others in the series so I'm not sure if 94 is too archaic now or what...

Understandable. SSV is certainly not the best fighter around. It's a shame we didn't get Tenka here instead.

As for Re-bout.... yeah, it is pretty archaic. I like it, but a lot of that is certainly nostalgia. I scrounged up money to get the Neo cart back in the day, so I have a certain place in my heart for it. The new backgrounds are surprisingly pretty good, but the gameplay feels very mid-90s SNK. Read: stiff controls, simplistic combo system, high damge, and "90s SNK A.I.". It's a very authentic port with a new layer of shine to it. The novelty of the new backgrounds faded for me, and I actually enjoy it more in the "original" mode with the new higher resolution 2D graphics. An arcade perfect port of the Neo version is also in there, nice touch. You can team edit, something that wasn't in the original. And you get playable Rugal and Saisyu. Nice little bonuses, but nothing that will convert people who weren't already fans.

Re-bout... if you find it cheap, it's a nice little 10th anniversary present to long-time KOF fans. I know Play-Asia was selling it really cheap for a while, but that was several months back. Most people would probably think $40+ is too much, but if you score it for under $20 it's a nice look back at the beginning of KOF. If you're gonna import an "old" PS2 KOF, you'd probably get more for your money with the Orochi collection that contains '95, '96, and '97. That's when the series really started hitting its stride IMHO.

You might also want to keep an eye out for any deals on the US PS2 2000/2001 pack. I see it pretty cheap sometimes, and 2000 is one of the better entries in the series. Of course, if you don't mind importing the Japanese collection of '99-'01 is going to be out in June.

Actually, I was planning on getting the KOF NEST Collection when it comes out on June 22 alongside KOF XI. It's got 99-2002 which seems like a good thing to have (even though some people hated the Strikers.)

I enjoy Samurai Shodown V but I though IV was better. I still think it is the best SS game released on NA consoles (not named Neo Geo). Yumeji and Sankuro seem WAY to powerful IMO.

I agree with firenze...

I don't think it is bad, but I do think it could have been better. I still enjoy it though. It beats the hell out of SS III on the PS One.
If you don't mind the graphics, it's pretty enjoybable. You definately don't need an HDTV for this game.
I like the "vintage" look.

I want that PS2 import SS game sooo bad. But since its $65, I'll probably wind up with the SSV on my Xbox for $15-20 when I find it used.

Oh, I agree. A few of my friends won't play it because they're nothing but dirty graphics whores. I think the game the really shines when it's in motion.

Those filthy graphics whores!

You might be waiting a long time. There aren't that many copies in circulation. I don't think Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, or any other chain got a hold of it except for GS/EB.

how ironic .. after owning this game for so long, i actually played it for the first time today.

yeah, after hearing reviews and opinions on the game, i was a little saddened of my purchase.. but after playing it for myself, i am very glad i picked it up a couple months ago. i like it quite a bit, but i only played a couple of rounds. if i actually buy an xbox at some point, i'd take the time to learn several characters and get good at it. ^_^

If you have a virgin megastore in your area, they should have a good supply. I saw about 6 at mine, and since it's downtown I don't think anyone would really want it. I'm waiting for it to drop.
ah, ive been wondering about this game, i guess im going to wait for a big drop before i pick it up then.
I've never seen so much shit in one persons sig before. j/k.

I almost pick up SSV yesterday at Gamestop for like 23 bucks. I was so close to picking it up but that lumming OVERDRAFT FEE came to mind. Maybe this friday.
