Samurai Warriors 4-II (PS4) $30 or $24 with GU

I'm not sure I understand the naming conventions in these games.  Could someone explain what the relationship between Samurai Warriors 4, Samurai Warriors 4-2, and Samurai Warriors 4 Empires is?  Is this one like a GOTY edition that makes the original version obsolete?

Samurai Warriors 4 is the first iteration of the game. 4-2 is just a revision of that first iteration. The scenarios in 4 and 4-2 are different and 4-2 added a new character. You probably don't want to buy or even play both unless you're a diehard fan of the series. Empires is something totally different. It still has the Warriors series styled battles, but there's a strategy game layered on top. Basically, you could pick one of Samurai Warriors 4 or 4-2 as they're pretty similar. Empires is a totally different type of game though.

For some reason a few months ago I found a copy of this at Best Buy for around $25 or so so came up to around $20 with GCU. I do agree...unless you're crazy about these games you only need one version (4 or 4-2...unless you really love that gameplay and story!).

I'd call amazon steep, BB $35 is decent. But yeah it stops me from buying games in sale for $20 all the time.
You're not wrong, but then anyone can subscribe to Prime. Meeting BB's yearly spending requirement for free shipping is nuts.

So 4-2 is like a Re release of 4? I'd like to try but I haven't played any in the series.

Good price, although I much prefer Empires. Has great game play and the tactical options are very good if you don't care as much about the story.

4-II is worse than 4 since they made some dumb changes in this one. 4-II is only an expansion for fans, if you plan on plan on playing one then get 4

Worse story and less playable characters than vanilla's story (every character had their moments in vanilla, only 13 characters have a story in II)
Cant transfer weapons between characters in II
Rare weapons drop RANDOMLY at lower percentages in infinite castle mode in II
Weapon Customization is worse in the series

It's not a rerelease, 4 focused on factions story, 4-2 only has character based campaigns focusing on the new characters added in 4, plus the 2 characters who won the popularity voting.
4-2 has improved weapon and combat system, as well as challenge mode. However 4-2 lacks some of the most significant stages in sengoku era (since all the new characters are younglings)
