Santorum Echo Syndrome: First Gay Marriage, Now First Cousins

PittsburghAfterDark

CAGiversary!
Remember how much flack Rick Santorum (R, PA) got when he said if we allow gay marriage that soon other groups would come forward seeking rights? You know, like bigamists, first cousins? Well who came first? First cousins! I was actually shocked that nearly half the states in this country allow you to marry your first cousin. Not the point though, we need to end the stigma against people that fell in love with and married their first cousins. It's just not fair that society is bigoted this way. Bigamists are next, heard it here, grounds of religious freedom and equal rights. Beastiality to come within 5 years.

Oh you conservatives, you just want everyone to be miserable.

Cousins' marriage highlights relationship controversy

Tuesday, April 5, 2005 Posted: 10:37 AM EDT (1437 GMT)

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- It began as the kind of childhood crush that often becomes family lore shared at reunions years later.

Eventually, first cousins Donald W. Andrews Sr. and Eleanore Amrhein realized they had a deeper love and wanted to wed. It couldn't happen in their home state of Pennsylvania, though, or 23 other states that prohibit first cousins from marrying each other.

Instead, they tied the knot in Maryland last month.

"This is a decision me and my husband have made on our own. We never thought of it being publicized," said Eleanor Andrews, 37. "We didn't want the publicity. We wanted the rights like anybody had the rights."

Their nuptials highlight a relationship that often draws scorn, yet advocates say is equally misunderstood. Such marriages are common in the Middle East, Asia and Africa and are legal in Europe and Canada.

In the United States, 26 states and the District of Columbia allow first cousins to wed, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Of those, five have requirements aimed at preventing reproduction and one state requires genetic counseling.

Robin Bennett, associate director of the medical genetics clinic at the University of Washington, said that laws prohibiting cousins from marrying are "a form of genetic discrimination."

Bennett led a 2002 study on risks of genetic problems in children born in such marriages. The study found that children born to couples who are first or second cousins have a lower risk for birth defects than commonly perceived.

On average, an unrelated couple has an approximately 3 percent to 4 percent risk of having a child with a birth defect, significant mental retardation or serious genetic disease.

Close cousins face an additional risk of 1.7 percent to 2.8 percent, according to the study, funded by the National Society of Genetic Counselors, and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

Christie Smith, 40, founded Cousins United to Defeat Discriminating Laws through Education, in 2002 to overturn laws banning such marriages. So far, the group hasn't found much success.

"People don't like what they don't understand," said Smith, who fell in love with her husband after seeing him at a family reunion.

I always thought the ratio for birth defects was higher, I learned something new. More power to em i guess.

SLIPPERY SLOPE! First we allow abortions, then we'll be KILLING BABIES WHILE THEY LAY IN BASSONETTES! What's to stop the doctors!? There's nothing we can do! SLIPPERY SLOPE!

I see. Slippery slope= using laws that are currently in place. Didn't know that.

Heh, not much success, must ignore this part, conflicts with my opinion.

to quote you:
you be dumb as dirt.

This just proves Santorum wrong. Gay marriage still isn't allowed in the US and yet first cousins still want to marry. Maybe the two issues have nothing to do with each other and Santorum is still an asshat.

The only way he can be proven right is if we allow gay marriage and then allow all the incest/bestiality marriages he assured us would come next. Not gonna happen.

Ya, people seem to be equating volutnary marriages which are illegal with involuntary marriages/sexual practices which are illegal (bestiality and pedohphilia).

Its all the fault of those damn activist judges :p
It's a shame what the liberals are doing to this country...
Haven't the conservatives been in power for the last 5 years?
Eventually they're going to start passing some crazy laws...
So, basically, you haven't gotten beyond the realm of "slippery slope" by presenting actual evidence. Seriously, when they start legalizing rape (bestiality, pedophelia etc.) call me.

How can I give you evidence for an opinion of what I think is going to happen in the future?

Eventually IMO, Gay marriage, incest, beastiality, and more then one partner marriage will become legalized.

Doesn't mean the liberals don't have a voice.

Doesn't matter through, we all come from Adam and Eve so aren't we all fucked up anyways?

I don't care who people marry. If they are adults and it doesn't worry me, then i don't care.

Animal rights gaining ground and beastiality (raping an animal) will be legalized? Gay marriage should be legalized (luckily, it's legal in every place I live, I even have pictures from the day it was first legalized in MA, coincidentally I was also in toronto on vacation when canada first legalized it). Incest is illegal, due to psychological reasons (parents taking advantage of kids) and birth defects. Multiple partners usually is adulterous, with one partner having no idea that others are married to that person, which is what would keep it illegal. Now joint weddings where everyone clearly knows and accepts the others I'm fine with, but that is rarely the case.

Seriously though, you were complaining about what's being done in this country as a result of gay marriage, nothing in that slippery slope argument is being done or close to being done. Therefore, my statement is correct.

There are animals that will have sex with people willingly... so therefor I think it will be legalized. I think the conservatives can grab ahold of gay marriage for a few more year before the push is made by liberals to legalize it. And lastly, I think one day incest will be legal because "[incest] couples will take the risk" of the child being born with birth defects.

You don't believe that we come from Adam and Eve though...

You can put the argument of incest into willing terms, but it is impossible to argue bestiality would not legalize rape. Sweden (I believe that's the country) has long legalized it, and vets have consistently campaigned against it, due to the ridiculous amount of injured animals they recieve as a result.

We would be if that were true.

That's the point, 95% of the people against gay marriage believe that bullshit.

You know, PAD, the same logic was used to say that is black people and white people could marry, then laws would be made to allow people to marry animals.

I find the acronym for her organization (C.U.D.D.L.E) highly amusing. :applause::lol:

I'm almost absolutely sure that the danger of deleterious genes are much higher than stated in the original article.

A girl who went to my high school had parents that were first cousins. I believe they got married in Alabama (not quite sure though). Anyway, she was pretty hot and she was a great athlete. I'm pretty sure she got a scholarship to Wake Forest.

Thats not really fair. Its easy to beat the other girls in bball when you have an extra arm.

Yeargh! That's not right! You're supposed to be mildly bored during family reunions, not horny. Eww.
"What's really not fair is why first cousins always have to be so HOT.
If your cousin ever reads that she's going to start sitting at a different table from you on the holidays.

I don't see why people even care. If some dude out in Kentucky wants to marry his best pig, who gives a shit? A law governing marriage still isn't going to stop him from fucking it.

Until the pig decides she can do better and sues him for half the trailer. Not to mention the ugly custody fight for the kidlets...
