I bought a copy of Mass effect for 36 bucks on ebay (shipped) thought it was a pretty goo deal. I paid instantly but because Paypal SUCKS, it automatically defaults to use my bank account instead of my credit card (I forgot to change it...) so it was taken from my bank account.. not the biggest deal...

so, fast forward to now and I still haven't received the game over a week later, so I go to check, and the person I bought it from says "no longer a registered ebay user"

I look at the feedback, and the DAY after I bought the item I see a ton of negative feedback for unsent items.. (just my luck)

I already went through the ebay and paypal disputes.. but I know I won't see a dime out of this.

This person had over 150 positive feedbacks (was like 98% or so for feedback when I bought the item)

my only recourse is to have my bank charge back the transfer... but all Paypal will do is take the money right back (I've been down this road before.. with a much more expensive item)

I love how ebay and paypal tout that they offer free buyer protection and all that jazz.... but when it comes down to it, they don't deliver anything...

Now, since this happened I still don't have a copy of mass effect... so I went on ebay to buy another one, this time I used the buy it now, (it said paypal payment required) which is fine. I bought the item, and go to check out, the only forms of payment are money order and cashiers check.... (what the hell?!)

Needless to say I won't be buying this (unless he decides to take paypal) so I'm STILL in search fo a copy of mass effect.

It seems god doesn't want me to own this game for some reason...

Since you paid through PayPal with your bank account, aren't you totally covered? I've been through that once before, and last I checked you had to pay $10 to get your money back (something about fees, etc.), but since the item was $12 it wasn't worth it.

That totally sucks though. Mass Effect is great. Don't let this get you down, you must acquire it.

yeah, already filed a claim and expedited it through paypal... I really don't expect to see any money back though.

I had a similar problem once. Except it was like 3 weeks and still no game so I filled the claim on paypal. He ended up sending the game then he must have not been to fimilar with paypal. It seemed to scare him into sending the game.

it's not hard for a scammer to get a lot of rep on ebay, all they do is mass buy digital art(basically a wallpaper) for $0.01 and they get feedback like that

Whats funny is they didnt put the funds on hold when he went NARU.

A buyer did that to me once and pay pal held the funds asap and never told me why he was a NARU etc and they eventually gave the money back.

As far as I could tell, the buyer never even replied to the dispute.

thanks for the support, I did request his contact information... although if its a scammer for real, I doubt I'll get a hold of anyone. but its worth a shot.

someone mentioned that paypal has buyer protection form payments made from a bank account? last time I got scammed (for a 600 dollar digital SLR camera) I paid from my bank account and I got NOTHING back.

When I finally got ahold of paypal, they said "we requested the money back from his account, but theres no money in it so we can't give you your money back" I then went to my bank and did a reverse transfer of the funds I paid. when the transfer went through, paypal took the money right back out of my bank account. I called paypal and they said "you reversed the charges so we can take the money out of your account" I asked, "so let me get this straight, you can't take the money out of the guy's account who scammed me, but you CAN take it right out of my account??" they replied simply with a "yes"

god that was a major pain in the ass.. luckly this is only for about 40 bucks

Not to derail the topic, but if my Family Video still has copies of MA for sale (for 29.99) I can pick one up and ship to you for cost (~$35 after tax, shipping and Paypal fees). Alot of people can vouch that I like to help other CAGs in need, even if I don't make a profit all the time.

I have to run up that way later today anyways to ship some stuff. Shoot me a PM and we'll work something out.

this is why ebay is in my top 5 worst website list. its jsut not good... impossible not 2 get scamed on it and old items ar just tom uhc. i have had problms with ebay and i dont like it.

I would have been done with ebay after the $600 incident.

Screw this. I cant wait to be done with them. I have a few more paintball things I am listing and possible an RC car this spring and thats that. Amazon here I come.

Did you file with Ebay for the camera? There is a $25 deductible so it may not get you much for ME, but it would have (I assume you have passed the time limit) made sense for the SLR.

EDIT: I'm not sure Ebay does this anymore. I just tried to look it up and it seems like Ebay defaults to Paypal's process if there is an issue. Which would make sense since they want everyone to use Paypal.

That is one reason I don't buy expensive items on Ebay.

well, with the SLR I actually ended up getting it 2 months later (after I had bought another one).
I located his phone number, address and IM screen name, I then had a chat with him and used google maps to find a local neighboring town, I simply asked him "hey, do you know where (insert town here) is?" he replied "yeah, thats pretty close it me" I then said "well, thats funny, because I have a cousin who lives there.... maybe I should go pay him a visit and drop in on you while I'm out there"

I got the camera a week later.

yeah, ebays "insurance" is 200 bucks, but with a 50 dollar deductible (so it wouldn't apply here)
I filed a claim, but like I said, don't expect my money back. I guess with all the money I've saved on ebay and CAG over the past year or so, I'm still way ahead of the game.

I just hate how there are so many dishonest people in this world

The fuck!? 1 cent items to get feedback up, eh? Little bastards are getting smarter. I've always checked feedback closely, as in what kinda stuff they've sold or bought, but still good to know. Good luck with that bullshit, OP. I got a friend that went through damn similar with Paypal cuz she forgot to switch it from Bank Account to Credit Card... eBay and Paypal a bunch of lying pricks about any sort of buyer protection.

I bought some shipping labels from a sellers, they only sent me 20% of the amount I ordered so and they also became NARU, so I filed a Paypal dispute. Paypal found the case in my favor but couldn't recover any funds so I got nothing back. Great buyer protection right? I now pay with a credit card for every transaction, even if it's under $10

yes they are.. I REALLY hope google comes out with something to rival eBay or paypal.... they wouldn't treat their customers this way.

gBay and gPay, baby! I can see it now!

On another note, when my girlfriend interviewed with Google a year or so ago I suggested that she pitch a dating site called gSpot to them. Apparently it got some chuckles in the interview.

I'd associate that name with a Porn Search Engine.

haha that is great! I'd totally buy gifts on gBay for a girl I met on gSpot.

google would be very smart to get something in the market to rival ebay and paypal. once you set it up, you have to do almost nothing (except raise prices every few months) and let your website users make you money.

Think about it, the sellers put up the ads (and ebay gets paid) the seller sells their item (and ebay gets paid again) the buyer sends payment (and paypal gets paid)

if something goes wrong, ebay and paypal basically say "whoops. nothing we can do" and moves on. they have flat out denied on several occasions that fraud is running rampid on ebay (I remember in 1 interview they said fraud on ebay was less than 1% of all transactions).

I really feel bad for people who get taken for thousands of dollars... in my position its not even the money, just the principle.
