Scary Story

Do something outside of the realm of stereotypical horror. ;o

Basically you need to start with the setup, some small amount of background information must be given about this evil entity shortly before or shortly after its initial appearance in the story. Then some people need to disappear, their bodies need to be discovered and the main character needs to have a confrontation with this evil entity. Oh and the evil creature must have some weakness that's been mentioned before for the main character to exploit.

There you go, good luck selling your idea to Hollywood.

Mix 2-6 parts horny teens/college kids + 1 part unfamiliar/isolated location + 1 part mysterious monster/villian + 1-6 parts violent deaths + 1 part twist ending = a scary story.

Or if you want to take the easy way out, search for folk tales and urban legends on the internet, take the premise, alter it a bit, and write from that.

Or here are a few premises:
People on vacation in forest cabin, evil spirit takes control of local animal population/a certain type of animals.

Take a standard horror creature convention: Vampires, werewolf, zombies, ghosts, alien, etc. and write a story featuring that. Ghost terrorizes inhabitants of a new house, Vampire hooker in disguise gets picked up by men then kills them to feed, try to raise a loved one from the dead and it goes horribly wrong.

Baby is spawn of satan; kills family.

Friend is spawn of satan; kills family.

President is spawn of satan; kills family.

And make sure it ends with a guy and a girl (Or two guys if you wanna show how individual you are) making out as a celebration to defeating the evil thing.

Ambiant activity is often scarier than the main action. Work on that. Honestly, there's very little that can be done in the realm of horror that hasn't been done before. If you want some good ideas, check out something by Lovecraft(The Dunwich Horror) or short stories by Poe (Mask of the Red Death, Cask of amontillado etc).

I would write a story about an evil cemetery that used to be an Indian reservation...oh wait nah go ahead and do it. I predict A+++ :D

I have a short 4 page gothic horror story I had to write for English, I should still have it around, if you want you can plagairaize me.

I used to work at a movie theater that was "haunted".

Years ago someone died in there, and his "ghost" was still there. He would turn on the soda fountains and let them run, shake the exit doors, turn on the movie projectors in the middle of the day, etc.

Oddly, most of us weren't afraid of him. It was just "George" looking for attention.

Once, while standing in the back of the theater to check to see if anyone was talking, I started walking backwards to go back to the lobby and I bumped into something hard. I turned around to say "excuse me" to the person I just backed into, but there was no one there. I assume it was George standing behind me watching.

Feel free to steal any of it for your story, LOL, but it's all true.

You can never get those games you want from the EB morning update. So you kill off all the CAGers one by one. But, to your horror, the EB site is never updated again, because the EB update guy was........

Then you say, "No, it's not fair....it's not fair.....I have time ...." etc.

Write a story about a small boy who gets picked on as a kid, describe him looking and acting like yourself and have him grow up to be a serial rapist and murderer. Be very detailed and explicit about his acts. Bet you'll get an A because the teacher will be scared! :D

Writing a horror story that has a totally original premise is nearly impossible now, just about everything imaginable has been done. My advice is to take a basic premise you've seen someplace else and expand on it, and mold it into your own work. Obviously don't plagerize someone else's work, but take something simple and basic like a vampire hunter or zombie story and just have fun with it. Use your imagination to it's fullest to make it fresh, the most succesful horror stories have come from creators that weren't afraid to use their imaginations and put whatever they were thinking into their stories.

There is some theory that all horror falls into 4 categories:

1. Frankenstein (the most popular)
2. Vampires
3. Ghosts/unexplained supernatural

I don't remember the rest...

Clowns/Klowns....people are afraid of clowns. I am not. I first learned this in college. I do not get it. Guys in makeup are offputting, maybe. But scary? Pfff.

And yes, I've seen and read "It".

Wait - you're saying clowns is the fourth group. That doesn't sound right... (I mean why not put spiders or heights there - ppl are scared of them too)

A story about a woman who has an evil Ghoulie head where her crotch should be.

this is a ghoulie:

For a twist on a tried and true formula:

An Indian Casino built on an old Spanish Cemetary.

Actually, some of the scariest stories I've read deal with the narrator being unable to distinguish reality from imagination...
