SEATTLE - A school bus driver fired after she reportedly made an obscene gesture at President Bush has filed a union grievance in an attempt to get her job back.
The 43-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was driving middle school children back to school after a zoo visit on June 16 when the president and Republican Rep. Dave Reichert drove slowly by in a motorcade.
From the bus, the children waved; with the windows down in their car, Bush and Reichert waved back.
That’s when the driver gave the president the finger, according to Reichert and Issaquah superintendent Janet Barry.

“The congressman hadn’t seen it, but the president turned to him and said, ‘That one’s not a fan,”’ said Reichert spokeswoman Kimberly Cadena.
Reichert later called Barry to tell her about the incident, but the bus driver had already been fired. District officials learned about the incident after the driver boasted to colleagues about it, Cadena said.
District spokeswoman Sara Niegowski said the driver has filed a wrongful termination grievance through the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The union did not return calls seeking comment.

Niegowski said the firing was not politically motivated.
“The bus driver was not terminated for making an obscene gesture at the president. The bus driver was terminated for making an obscene gesture in view of the students,” Niegowski said. “That’s not the role modeling we need for our students.”

Yeah...the people that fired him are gonna pay dearly...

If all the kids gave him the finger at the same time as the driver... that bus would of been pulled over and a mass execution would of taken place. Stoopid kids.

Seriously though....all jokes aside....He was on the job with a bus filled with children. The people who fired him have a case. I think the right thing to do is that he should apologize to the employer and they should hire him back.

As much as I like the idea of flipping off George Bush, you are on the job and you have to behave accordingly.

Yeah right. Insert _____ as being flipped off by the school bus driver with kids on the bus and they would be fired every time.

she; her; she; her.

I'm sure that the publicity of the matter (moreso than the person it was directed at) helped motivate the firing. I genuinely wouldn't expect to see a bus driver fired for giving the finger, but surely reprimanded. In order to quell throngs of angry parents (the most frightening thing ever, except for absent-minded parents), they fired her quickly, I'm sure.

 I was begining to think I was the only one that noticed it was a woman.

don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

if a bus driver or teacher said fuck in front of my kindergarten girl, i'd want them fired as well....same difference imo

But you gotta ask yourself. Is our children learning?

Thank you. It's hard to be politically motivated when you get fired before the person offended calls to complain.

Why are people looking at the person as the modifier and not the act? Giving the finger is defined as road rage in a few states now. I'd be just as easy to fire her for that reason.

yes, but which obscenities the child learns should always be the parents choice

This is how I see it. If she had flipped off another random driver for cutting her off it probably wouldn't have even gone further than the bus. But with the publicity attached, the school district was put in a lose/lose situation, where if she was fired people would be upset (and they are) and if she wasn't people would be upset. I guess the easier thing to do was fire her.

That's a fair and balanced opinion.

lol.... well you need to have some teacher friends or be a teacher yourself, because the shit i witness my "boss/mentor teacher" did to the kids infront of me is a shit load worse then saying fuck. Was she fired? Nope, she quit to work for ANOTHER school county. I have so much shit on tape of the shit she said I could fuck her over by sending it over to that county, but then she will know it was me who turned it over since I was in the room in most of the situations.
