Screen goes blank with killzone 3 and other demos

I am having a problem with a few demos I just downloaded, killzone 3, bulletstorm, and mass effect 2. I download and install the demo, but the screen goes blank when i try to play the game. I can hear the music, but just can't see anything My HDTV is about 10 years old and is only 1080i. Every other game and bluray movie plays fine. I was going to buy these games, but won't, unless i can find a way to fix this problem. I looked through the settings, but can't find anything i missed.

It works in 480, but not when I change the settings back to 1080i. I emailed ps3 support and they said killzone 3 won't support 1080i, and will only do 720p. Seems strange that such a major title won't go to 1080. I won't pay $60 to play a game in480, so I will wait till it is really cheap...whenever that happens
