Scurge: Hive (Choose GBA or DS -- $9.99 each) at GameStop.com (Ships Free)

Yeah, I bought this at $15 and just never could get into it. Some people have really enjoyed it though. I'd say there's a lot better DS games out there.. but $10 isn't bad.

Thanks for the info, I was waiting for this game to drop to $10 or less. I might just see if I can find a used copy to save a little more, but according to GS.com a used copy of the DS version is still $12.99. I'd assume that it will drop to $7.99 or so soon.

What's the difference between GBA and DS version? Because on Gamerankings the GBA version has 76% while the DS version only has 70%

Thanks for the info! Just picked up a copy at my local gamestop. Good deal for a game I was interested in trying out!

Was wondering the same thing.

Hello just saying hi to another Milwaukee CAG....

As I recall, the GBA reviews were better because the two versions were almost identical, but the GBA version debuted at a lower price. The DS version didn't justify the extra cost.

P.S. both versions are $7.99 used

Exactly. The game was originally developed for the GBA, and the DS version didn't add much, if anything. When the game first came out, the DS version was $30 and the GBA $20, so most reviewers recommended just getting the cheaper GBA version.

I ordered the GBA version since I can play it in either my DS or my Micro.

Same here. I love the premise of the game, but the execution I just couldn't get into; not to say the gameplay was bad or broken, it just didn't appeal to me.

damnit...another price drop!? I paid $30 for my DS version two weeks after it came out (for some reason it was hard to find for like the first two weeks or so after release...but after that all stores have it and are now clearing them out).

$10 new for the game is pretty worth it.

My 2 Cents re:GBA Vs. DS

EDIT: GBA version has supposedly better graphics (mist effects and whatnot), but the DS version has the map screen showing on the bottom screen at all times. I'm a map guy.

Ordered one, always wanted to try it. Glad I'm waited a few weeks since I almost got it when it was $15.

The developers have said, many times, that there are no extra effects in the GBA version. Both are exactly the same, except for a slightly increased viewing area in the DS version and that super-convenient map on the lower screen.

I played this on the DS, and that map was hella useful. I really recommend this game to Metroid fans. It's a big, fun game.

How do you get free shipping? I used the code, and it said it's active for my next purchase, but on the next screen it just shows the standard list of shipping options.

Am I supposed to choose the cheapest "value" shipping, and then that's free? Or is it any shipping?

I've been hesitant on this at full price because of the mixed opinions, but hey, for $10 I'll try an original Metroid style game. Although I suspect I won't like the perspective. Give me 2D side scrolling any day.

Great game. I just started playing the DS version last week and got hooked immediately. Nicely blend of action/exploration/puzzle. Well worth the price.

I got all the way to the boss of the game and gave up on it. It was a three part battle and the final one kept cheap shotting me. Strange because up until then the game had zero difficulty whatsoever.

This is a game that would have greatly benefited from either a lock on, strafe, or "plant your ass and rotate and shoot" button. As it is, I couldn't get a feel for running around, only being able to shoot forward, while the enemies fly around your character.

I would have given it a 6/10 for good concept, good atmosphere, flawed execution.

For what it's worth, here is the closing of the IGN review of the GBA game:

Scurge: Hive is a fantastic game, there's no question about it. But which one should gamers buy? Both games are great, but the GBA version really stands out. The graphics are stronger, and the price is cheaper. If players really want that map on the bottom screen, then by all means, go for the DS version. Even with the less polished graphics, Scurge: Hive is an excellent buy.

As someone mentioned, the developer has repeatedly said that's bogus, and other reviews haven't said anything about that (nor does it makes much sense when they'd be running mostly identical code).

That review was NOT by Craig Harris by the way.

I paid full price as soon as it came out and I'm glad that I did. I would love to see a sequel, but since no one bought this game that will never happen.

I have both versions of the game (still unopened), so I'll have to play them both and see if I notice anything. If there are any differences I'm sure they are very minor.

I've played both versions, and there does seem to be a slight graphical difference. In the DS version, there is a fog effect in some rooms that is somewhat more pixellated than it is in the GBA version, which does look a bit worse although not significantly so. Unless you're specifically looking for it, or are comparing the two side by side, you probably won't even notice.

That said, at the same price, the DS version is a better buy unless you really like your Micro or something. It uses the entire screen (showing more of the current area), the always-on map is quite nice, you can reconfigure the controls to use the X and Y buttons if you like (which is actually very handy), and of course on a DS Lite you don't have the GBA cart sticking out. But at $10 either version is definitely worth it.

That "cheap shot," in which the boss grabs you, can be avoided by killing the multi-colored hmm-hmm that are running around. You can start killing them as soon as they appear; the boss will only do his attack if you let them get up to three at once.

...but that's not how I did it. That grabby move will take you down to one HP, but it won't kill you. And the hmm-hmm will only attack immediately after that grab. I shot the boss until he grabbed me, and then jumped away and repeated until it died.

I thought the game was really bad, to be honest. Lousy control scheme. Imbalanced combat. Just wasn't fun gameplay-wise.
