SD memory: what does everyone think?
on the 360, the 20 gb HD is not enough.
wish people would refer to what they're talking about when they post...not big enough for what? you're probably using it wrong. you're supposed to delete things when you're not using them and DL them later. I frequently download stuff and the lowest I've been is 4.5 gigs left.

edit: what epobirs said ;)
If I can use a USB Memory Device I will probably never use SD
Why is that? SDs are almost 1/2 the price of USB devices.

Using SD memory is a complete Godsend, IMHO.

Cheap, reliable, quick data access, very large sizes - what more could we ask for, really?

The absolute IDEAL option, IMHO.

I love that they are using a standard flash card vs. a propietary memory card. Very surprised a company would do that as I'd guess the memory cards have a very high profit margin for the GC, Xbox, PS2, 360, etc. But for consumers it's great.

My camera happens to take SD cards so I already have a 1 GB and two 512 MB cards laying around, which makes it even better for me. :)

its a nintendo thing? They used SD for gamecube mem card and for play yan. I don't think they profit at all unless they are gonna release NINTENDO BRAND SD card. 3rd party SD cards may cause explosion
Interesting, but he uses Mb when he means MB. And $40 for a 256MB card??? I just bought a 2GB card for $18 after rebate, where the heck did he get $40 from?
Yeah that's what I was thinking, I paid $50 for a 1gb a year ago.

Yeah I was wondering that also, But I thought it was a good read..

sum1s gonna flame me... but does this mean you can dl a game off the VC put it on an SD card and then copy it to another SD card to give to your friend?

Absolutely.

Although, just in case Nintendo might have thought someone would try this, I wouldn't get my hopes up that the game will actually work on another Wii. But feel free to give your friend an SD card anyway. While you're giving them out, can I have one too?

Going with industry-standard flash memory is a good thing. I'm guessing it was cheaper and more elegant than trying to design in an I/O and extra space for a hard drive. I think this way is more flexible and given the lighter technical requirements of Wii games and lack of DVD or other high-capacity media playback, I'm sure it will be more than enough for most people's purposes. As others have said, Wii being primarily a game system as opposed to a multimedia system will make it less necessary for large-scale storage.

That reminds me, I will need to stock up on SD cards soon. Too bad most of my flash-based storage is compact flash.

Why? The internal 512 is going to be more than sufficent to store your saves and VC games for quite a while I daresay.

Nah, I'd rather keep that as clean as possible and stick what I can on the flash.

The article isn't available online yet but EE Times this week has a piece on Samsung's progress on flash and PRAM technology. SamSung believes their current process will scale to 20nm to produce 256 Gb flash memories.

That's 32 GIGABYTES on a single chip, allowing 128 GB in an SD card.

Within the Wii's lifecycle.

SD will get the job done just fine.

another thing to consider guys is the Wii's OS Capabilities. Meaning how large an SD card will it be able to read. Your talking "in the future we'll have 256 gig flash cards" next question is "Will the Wii be able to read those cards?". Its a more serious issue than you think the PSP has had to update its firmware a few times to add features one of which was to allow reading of larger Memory Duo cards above the 4 gig mark which it couldn't read before (might of been above 2 gig I dont recall). Fact is unless they put some sort of mechanism in place to update the firmware in the machine itself you may be stuck with smaller storage space sizes than you think. Just food for thought is all I'm saying.

*nod* still a small pain for those of us without broadband but at least they have a mechanism in mind to update the firmware.

You might be able to copy it, but you will not be able to play it on another Wii. It will be DRM'ed to only play on the Wii that originally downloaded it.
