I was wondering what games were good for the system (I mean what stands the test of time, as in something that may have been good now sucks)

I picked up Ecco today at Goodwill for like 2 bucks today and am going tomorrow to another Goodwill trying to find some more stuff.

Things I already plan on getting include:

Snatcher, Eternal Champions, maybe the Lunar's and the system

Eternal Champions...that game frickin' ruled. Why have they not made an update for it?

I had a bunch of crappy Sega CD games. Willy Beamish, one of those FMV games, Make My Video with Kris Kross (a riot in my college dorm room), and some 32X/Sega CD combo game about first person fighting.

Actually the fighting game was kind of fun. I think it was Supreme Warrior. Really cheesy but I enjoyed it.

Good luck on the Lunar games, those bastards used to be expensive. Plus if you've played the PSX versions, you'll think the Sega CD versions are beyond shitty.

yea I just stuck the Lunar's on the list because, if I find them cheap I will pick them up.

Mainly I want one for Snatcher, so I am trying to find some more games to justify a purchase. I totally forgot about Sonic CD until a minute ago.

and I def. have to get Kris Kross

and I always wondered why there was not an update to Eternal Champions as well. I think it would be awesome for them to bring back the bloody 2D fighter with an update

I seem to remember the chick in Supreme Warrior was somewhat hot, in a frightening way.
Keio Flying Squadron.
Bouncers, goofy little basketball game.
Popful Mail.
Sega Classics. Man, my gf and i stayed up all night for weeks playing Columns and Streets of Rage.
i've got about 20 sega cd games up in my closet, but those are the ones [in addition to Lunar/Lunar II] that pop into my head.

Liked Eternal Blue quite a bit more for the Sega CD than the PS version.

Some other games I'd get are: Vay, Snatcher, Dark Wizard, Popful Mail and Shining Force CD.

The Working Designs games were the best for the system, but they weren't even that great. That would be: Lunar 1&2, Popful Mail, and Vay. Shining Force CD was incredible as was Sonic CD. That's really about it. I played Eternal Champions, but really didn't like it. I doubt any of these will come cheap, though - I sold my Lunars for ~$50 each a little while ago.

I forgot all about Vay ... brings back memories (not that it was that good). Dark Wizard was pretty good. Don't ask me why but I remember liking Road Avenger for some reason (it's a Dragonslayer-like "video" game).

EDIT: Don't forget to be on the look-out for that memory cartridge!

Despite what many say Time Gal was actually fun. So were other FMV games like Cobra Command (Helicopter/shooter.) and I want to say Roadside Vengeance??? (It was a anime/Speed Racer game that was great.) but I can't remember the name. The Japanese Sonic CD was FAR superior to the U.S. release the soundtrack was night and day different and better. You should be able to find this one cheap, you'll need an import cartridge though for your genesis.

Many of the basics were already mentioned. Eidos had a semi-decent helicopter game that utilized the scaling and rotation called Thunder Strike that I highly enjoyed. I can only imagine how bad this game must look to gamers today. Other than that I don't have a whole lot to add. I really tried to love the Sega CD but in hindsight don't have that many fond memories of it besides the Japanese Sonic CD. I shudder to think what I'd actually think of Night Trap, Sherlock Holmes and any of the other FMV games on it. I thought they looked horrible at the time, let alone 11 years later.

EDIT: I have to say after that 411 list that I'm surprised I forgot Silpheed. It was THE rail shooter of the 16 bit era, I liked it much more than Star Fox. Another must have. I wasn't that into RPG's at the time so the only one I had was Lunar because there was nothing else worth getting at the time. Wow, I just remembered how hard those games were to come by and how slow the releases are.

I forgot about Vay and Shining Force CD. Never owned either of them.

And if you liked the Sega CD version of Lunar over the PSX version...I simply don't know what to say. Shoddy, compressed graphics vs full screen kick-ass animation. Alrighty then.

nobody mentioned night trap yet????

i was so psyched because i beat that game without missing a single trap!! it sucked because i did't get a different ending...

some of my Sega CD favs...
Snatcher (i took it back to best buy after i beat it, and i have regretted it ever since)
Sonic CD
Rise of the dragon
Mad Dog Mcgree
Night Trap (of course)
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Ground Zero, Texas
and Time Gal. all good classic games and i have no idea where they are right now, in a box somewhere!!

From way back in December 2003, but still something I think would help
thanks for the link. I def. have to get one of these now

also you mentioned Dracula as being a decent game. Should I go back tomorrow and pick up the game from Goodwill?
HELL YES! Dracula Unleashed is an incredible FMV game where you really have to think about what you are doing. it's up there with Shadowgate and Lunacy as great puzzle games. This one just has voice acting and some neat twists to it.

Third World War.

That was a good game. I just wish I remembered where I stored it. Really fun game and addicting. If you find a copy pick it up.

Sonic CD is STILL my favorite Sonic game to date (and I've played ALL of them).

Also, good luck finding it, but Data East put out a game called "PANIC!" back in the day and its one of the funniest games ever made. You basically play as a kid that gets sucked into his TV and you have to push random buttons in hopes of escape. Push the wrong button and something hilarious happens. As I said tho, its SUPER RARE so good luck finding it.

PANIC!! Yeah I remember that game. I consider it the spiritual godfather of Wario Ware. In Japan it was called Switch, and they actually did a remake of the game for PS2...

I was actually playing Sonic CD before I read this post.

The Japanese Sonic CD was FAR superior to the U.S. release the soundtrack was night and day different and better

Yeah, if you like Japanese rap... I thought it was a little corny. The US sound track is still very very good and probably one of the best around to this day. Silpheed IS excellent though and can be found very cheaply.

And I liked the SegaCD versions of Lunar more than the psx, don't ask me why.

Most of the great ones have been mentioned, Popful Mail, Vay, Lunar 1+2, Shining Force CD, Keio Flying Squadron, etc, just don't forget about Samurai Showdown and Fatal Fury Special.

Personally I like NHL 94, still the best hockey game around for any system.

Lik-sang.com has an unreleased SegaCD game called Citizen X for sale, has anyone tried it?
Ground Zero, Texas
THAT'S the FMV game that I had. Pretty lame, and by today's standards....*shudder*.

Was Cadillacs and Dinosaurs anything like the arcade game?
Eternal Champions...that game frickin' ruled. Why have they not made an update for it?
They had an update planned for the Sega Saturn. On the side of the box in which the Saturn came, they had a list of games coming out for it, with a screenshot for each. There was a screenshot for a new Eternal Champions game. I remember the screenshot was 3D, though I think it may have been FMV rather than in-game. In any case, the game was later cancelled, but I never heard why.

Final Fight CD. It's by far the best home version ever made and the soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time.

Lords of Thunder is great too, but the Duo version is better.

Bari-Arm also has a flawless soundtrack though it plays a bit too slow for my shooter tastes.

Anyone else with me that early CD-ROM games had THE best soundtracks of all time? It's like they actually cared back then.

(I don't mean to threadjack, but it had to asked!)

I remember really liking the theme song to Road Avenger. I couldn't tell you how it goes anymore. Maybe it's time to dig in the closet.

Ah yes, Ground Zero Texas. Aliens and cowboys.
Shining Force CD was good, but it was *too much* battle. It got redundant after a while. You merely went from battle to battle, IIRC.
Battle..something? Some first person mech game? Anyone remember that one? Best part about it was the deep *thunk* it had when you fired a certain type of weapon.
Snatcher, as well. I sold mine after beating it....on Usenet, before I found ebay : (
I remember my wife got really into Mansion of Hidden Souls....this does not mean it was good, however, I didn't like it that much.

Mickey Mania--platformer going through Mickey Mouse's history of films.

What was Time Gal like? I kept seeing that one, but never picked it up.
I think I had as many Sega CD games as Sega Gen games--not too long after I bought it, the local rental store decided to dump a lot of their games, and I got probably 15-20 games [Gen and CD] for 5 bucks each.

DTcarson: Battlecorps. Really impressive stuff for the time.

Time Gal was just like Road Avenger and the others. The animation/frame rate always seemed really choppy to me for some reason though. I'm surprised how many people like it. I remember a letter in EGM from a kid just begging them to release it here. Obviously, they did.

I've been debating for about a year now buying a SegaCD simply for Sonic CD. Me need more 2D Sonic.

I know you said snatcher, but that game is worth getting the sega cd just to play it. Damn Konami for not releasing an english version of the saturn version.

What got this all started was talking about Policenauts. I would rather see that released over here before a port of Snatcher.

You would think someone at Konami would want to cash in by releasing an MSX collection with a bunch of games that never came out here in America. I know that I would buy it if it came out

Especially with the surge of interest in 'classic' gaming, and multi-game anthologies. The average game is old enough now to think back and say 'Man, these games were fun' or 'I wish I had a chance to play these games' and has the disposable income to buy them. Not to mention, with the prevalance of the internet today, a game manufacturer could release a game/s that might not be all that profitable selling it via the 'normal markets' [shipping stock to big box stores and trying to buy shelf space], and just sell it on a website for very low overhead.

Man, there was a game I believe it was called Heart of the Alien, or something like that. It was a sequel to a Genisis game called Out of this World. Loved the Genesis game...very fluid character motions at the time. Never owned a Sega CD but I did rent one once and tried to get through the game, which I couldn’t do. Anyone know what game I’m talking about or if it was ever released on another platform?

Out of this World 2: Heart of the Alien is what you're thinking of. If you liked those two, you might enjoy Flashback: Quest for Identity. I played that on the SNES and it's very similar in design.

Then the Flashback sequel, Fade To Black, appeared on the PSX.

I think releasing remakes of Snatcher and Policenauts in a package deal would kick ass. It wouldn't take much work either... Just release it when the hype for Metal Gear Solid 3 hits a fever pitch and call it "Konami Presents: Kojima Masterworks" or something fancy like that.
