Sega to shut down Chromehounds (EDIT: its over)

I logged over 200 hours of playtime with this gem when it first came out. I stopped playing when SEGA refused to patch the damn servers and lag mad it nearly impossible to enjoy. I'll be sad to see my old friend finally be laid to rest, but sadly enough i expected it much sooner than this. I'll probably try a few matches here in a bit and see if it's playable.
On a side note this is why we need a Gamers Bill of Rights. Because what is stopping a developer from releasing a game, then in a year or 2 shutting it down.
Why nothing at all. EA did this all of the time with their PS2 Online games.
Its not like Shadowrun, there is a single player but it sucks. The game was meant to be played online. If you're worried about achievements, there are 170 possible offline achievement points.

I'll probably have to go back to Mechassault 2. What else is there? Armored Core blows, and the new Mechwarrior is years away.
I didn't even realize that people still play MechAssualt 2. I tried to boot up a game a few months ago and no one was playing online. I did enjoy it quite a bit a few years ago though, and was hoping that Microsoft would release a third one on the 360 (why haven't they?).

Its not that many people, I'm just not good enough at many other games to play them competitively at a reasonably high level.

MS doesn't own Mechwarrior anymore, the creator bought it back. He wants to release a new Mechwarrior for 360, he's got a trailer out but no publisher yet.

wow Sal Kar is been occupied right after I switched to it days ago...nao I cant buy any parts from shop
Judging from your list of games played, I doubt you know what its like to play a squad based game competitively over a long period of time, and how dedicated the players become.
Squad based games are the best, because you depend on other players to help you win the fight. There isn't just an Uber warrior who doesn't need his mates, because when he starts to get owned he looks to his team for help. I look at squad based games where you play and fight with honor, knowing that either side can win, and can have fun with it and complement foes for excellent shots and good ambushing, rather than bitch and moan over the fairness some people use to fight.

On top of that, you're not playing with randoms. You run with the same group of people and you play against a group of people, not random players. Teamwork, tactics, and strategy all have to be done at the highest levels if you want to compete. You don't get that in most games.
Sega is shutting down the servers for Chromehounds on January 6, 2010. Unlike Steel Battalion where the campaign was shut down but online free play was still possible, there will be no online play for Chromehounds at all.

Thanks Sega. You stood behind Chromehounds just like you did with the Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I've been buying Sega products all the way back to the Master System days and never have I been as pissed at them.

CHROMEHOUNDS is the thing that sets you off?! CHROMEHOUNDS?!!

They still put out a lot of quality games even through the Xbox 1 days. I am a little pissed at them for not making Shenmue 3, and of course for ruining Sonic, Shining Force, and generally becoming just another mediocre developer. But that was a drawn out process.

This is fucking retarded. Why doesn't Sega just OUT the info so someone can set up a server for all of us?

You know why Sega is for shit now dafoomie. Blame Sammy, they basically castrated them. Oh sure, they SAID they'd leave Sega alone and it would be just a "Get Out Of Bankruptcy" free card. What a load of horseshit.

edit: I don't have this game but I just hate the idea of online being shut down on product in general, especially when it's not on PC so they can make it harder for people to create a server for this. Sega knows this is bs.

Well this weekend I will be on. I want to play this online and have only logged in once online. For me I have a large backlog but will put this at the front as the online wll be down in a little over a month.

Just got on and saw they will shut down 11/24/09 to update some things. Are they still planing on shuting down after the first of the year? Also I tride to get a player and rank game going and now one was on. I would also like to get some mass effect time in this weekend so if you see I am on I will stop and play Hounds just send me a message.

Well that is good to know. Is their times that are better to connect to play others? Evertime I go to ranked and player it says no one is on.

Nobody ever played ranked freebattles. Just do regular freebattles or play the war.

Its hard to get matches in the war right now, understandably a lot of people have lost their enthusiasm for the game. But theres always some freebattles going. They'll probably ask you to talk or say hello in the lobby if they don't know you.

Bump for last day. Tomorrow they shut down. Hopefully I'll have time tonight for a couple last matches and maybe one more achievement.
what kind of game is this? never even heard of it.
Its kind of like Steel Battalion without the huge controller. Sort of.

Its squad based mech combat with fully customizable mechs, to the point that there is no such thing as a default mech. Its more of a sim and slower paced than a game like Mechassault, and unlike that game there is no "lock on", you aim your weapons yourself.

It has a fully persistent online war mode with 3 factions where territories are won and lost, each territory features 3 to 4 unique maps and there are 22 territories. It also has a free battle mode. Its because of the expense of running the war that they're shutting the game down, and the game wasn't designed to support the free battle without the other stuff so once the servers are gone, you can't play the game online in any mode ever again.

Its very much about teamwork, tactics, strategy, and your builds. Great multiplayer game. Its from the makers of Armored Core but it doesn't play like those games. Its 3rd person but you can switch to a 1st person gun sight view with a reticule to aim.

Chromehounds ceased to exist at about 2:30am EST on January 7th.

My final record in the war:

Missions: 4305
Victories: 3005
Defeats: 1260
Shots Fired: 3024
Enemies Defeated: 1213
COMBASs Secured: 6608
HQs Destroyed: 118

"Shots Fired" means kills, "Enemies Defeated" means deaths. They never did fix the translation errors in the game. At least I got to go out on a 5 game win streak, played some good ones today. Going to miss this game.
