Selling off a collection?

Alright. I don't really play my previous gen games or systems that much, and while I might get a case of nostalgia in the future, I'd much rather sell them for a decent sum of change; the problem is, where? Now before you all say eBay, I have to remind you that I've never sold anything on there before, and I'm not so sure I'd like to deal with them taking part of my profits, no would I like to deal with deadbeat bidders.

I would really like to sell off my whole collection in one fell swoop, and while I understand that might not bring the potential profit of selling it all off piece by piece, it would get it all out of the way and hopefully net me with something I'd be happy with.

I have roughly 650+ games spanning all the way from the original Nintendo all the way up to PS2, Xbox and GC. Most of my older systems (excluding Gameboy) like the Genesis, Saturn, Nintendo, SNES, Virtual Boy, those all have 20 or less games. The bulk of my collection is in PS2, followed by Xbox and then GC. I also have a lot of PC games I'd like to get off my hands as well.

I'm curious as to what you guys think I should do with them.
If all those are used, not much of a collectors item in the first place.
Uh... there's no standard for what can and cannot be called a collection. 650 games is a pretty damn good collection.

OP, if eBay isn't an option than you'll have to settle for Craigslist or forums (*cough*CheapAssGamer*cough*). I wouldn't bother trading any of it in to pawn shops or mom & pop stores as you probably won't get anything for them. Just list what you have (though listing 650 items can get pretty tiring) and take offers on individual items and then maybe list whatever doesn't sell in a large lot.

You probably won't get as much as you would have selling on eBay but you also don't have to pay any fees.

Thanks Vinny. I was thinking about putting some stuff up on CAG; I'm going to start the long process of listing everything I have later this week.

I'll give you $2.

Seriously though, I wouldn't recommend Craigslist unless you have the patience of a saint. I've lost track of the number of people who've said they're going to drop by, only to no-show. You might also try Goozex for some of your newer stuff, if you're just looking to trade in for current gen games.

I mean ebay isn't hard to use but I understand if you are hesitant to use it especially if you've never sold on it before. You could try Amazon or ebay's little cousin Half.com. If you need help or advice selling your stuff online shoot me a pm or ask in this thread and I'm sure myself and some of the other ebay savy CAGS could give you some advice.

You could also try to list some stuff here, I'm sure there are many CAGs who would be interested in parts. If you decide to go sell on craigslist I would list the stuff at 20%-30% higher then the price you want cause people will usually offer you less. Hope that helps.

Step 1: Determine if you have ANYTHING 'rare' or hard to find. If so, SELL IT ON EBAY!! DO NOT CRAIGSLIST IT!! Once you have your list made up, cut and paste the names into the search function on Ebay, look for completed listings, and list from high to low and look for the listings which DID sell.

Step 1(part 2): If that doesn't work too well, check this site: http://www.digitpress.com/ Click on the Online Rarity Guide to the left, input your game's name into the search function(it may take a few tries)and if it's anything like a 5 or above, SELL IT ON EBAY!!

Step 2: You need to familiarize yourself with some rare or sought after games, since they are worth more than trade fodder.

Here's some examples(if you have these, EXCLUDE them from your list for on here or Craigslist):

Digital Devil Saga Nocturne
Silent Hill(original Playstation game)
Intelligent Qube(original Playstation game)
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2(PS2 or Xbox)

There are ALSO a bunch of harder to find PC games which are worth a decent buck if I remember correctly. Basically, what I'm trying to say in this response(short version) is: DON'T SELL ANYTHING UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT!!!

Why, you might ask? Because wouldn't YOU rather make the money on your stuff than someone else who might buy it off you for a pittance and resell it?

^^^ Actually a quicker way to find out if you have anything valuable is to just list every you have. Anything rare or valuable you have listed will get a high number of (really bad) offers.;)

Research before you dive into it. I was a younger fool and sold off the bulk of all of my old games from my collection (roughly 100 games from the NES to the N64) to a GameStop back like 8 years ago or something, not realizing I had quite a bit of worthwhile collector's games. I got a few hundred bucks in credit, but damn I wish I had all my old stuff back, just to have.

I'd sell in lots if you're 100 percent sure. Like a lot of 50 games or so to eBay or anybody on the internet or close-knit communities like CAG. Don't forget about putting out a local ad in the paper, as old fashioned as it sounds, it's still a legit place to get good cash from offers.

Thanks for your help guys, and keep the suggestions coming.

I'm not a complete noob or anything, but I don't know all the current games that are rare. I do have MvC2 for PS2, Ikaruga for GC, Disney DDR for the PSX, some stuff like that.

I will certainly look into the rarity factor of my collection; I'm sure some of my Virtual boy games could fetch me at least $15 alone.

Edit: dg7md,

I remember times like that as well. I remember when DC first came out, I traded in my Genesis, Saturn, and all their games towards a Dreamcast and was still about $100+ short. I still think it was worth it though; God I love the DC.

That's what I was trying to say, without being mean and just coming out and saying it. If the OP wants any idea of who might do just that though, I'd recommend they go visit the 'Craigslist deals' thread and look around.

Everyone has given some good advice. As far as systems, try to sell the older ones wirh games but be open to offers for just some of the games.

I was the same way with EBAY, but I finally gave in this week and put my first item up. It really is the best way to get the most money possible for your stuff. I wouldn't put it as one big lot though. Selling individually would get you the most money but would also present the most hassle. The best way to do it is if you have anything that is really, really valuable (i.e. rare games or systems) put those up individually. The rest of the stuff you can break up into smaller lots.

Why don't you just put up one thing for sale like I did and let the whole transaction work it's way through so you can get used to how Ebay works. After that it should be a piece of cake.

Another Option with the Xbox, PS2, and GC games is to sign on to Goozex and trade them there. With all the points you get back you should be able to really build your current gen collection.

I second the Goozex selection. Some of the PS2, XBOX, GC games would give you a better return with points rather than if you had just sold it.

Hey now! I resent that remark! I don't lowball too badly on craigslist (if I do, it's only because the seller undervalues an item already - that woman who sold me the giant CD album full of PS1 and PS2 RPGs and rarities didn't care about them and was happy with the $100), and definitely not here on CAG. Plus, you could say the same about the yard sale thread...take a look at those insane lowball scores of a lifetime (some of which I've had the pleasure of making).

Sell all the common stuff in big bulk lots. But skim off the choice rare, or in demand titles and sell them seperately.

If your gonna use Ebay, which is the best way, try to get a friend with a good feeback number to host your auction, since you said you have no experience selling on ebay.

Most people are very wary of buying from sellers with zero, or a single digit feedback number. You'll lose money because experienced ebayers will stay away from your auction.

I've tried the CIF thing a couple of times, but even this most recent time(last weekend), it backfired on me. Either I get a stubborn person who won't budge on the price(Genesis arcade stick for $4, I tried to CIF $2-3)or someone like I did this past weekend with wireless internet access to be able to check something's value online while I'm trying to offer less than they want.

Mind you, I DID get Firefighter FD 18 for $14 or so, but I wanted it for $10.

I sold 1/2 of my collection last year - atari, genesis, nes, SNES, and saturn systems with about 350 games between them all and made $1000. Fees, and what I lost in shipping and handling were almost $120. I'm in the middle of selling the other 1/2 of my collection (5 systems, 250 games) right now and I've already taken in about $800.

One SNES collection of 80 games sold for $200, the second with 20 top tier games sold for another $200. My NES collection of 25 top games sold for $160. My Genesis III collection of 35 boxed games and accessories went for almost $130.

Do your research by looking up completed auctions and separate your collections into meaningful packages and offer them for a buy-it-now price just slightly higher than you expect to get. Then after a day or 2 you can lower the price to get a bite if it's too high. This works much better, IMO, than dealing with reserve prices or having to wait a full week for a listing to end. Your main problem, however, is that you probably have no feedback yet. Buyers are always cautious of new sellers and their items don't seem to attract full market value.

I'd also advise you to buy a postal scale. They can be found on ebay for cheap and they'll save you from losses on guessing weights or driving to the Post to weigh packages before listing them. I got a 50lb. scale for $18 and it was well worth the price.

Remember to advertise your auctions in the forums here at CAG for greater exposure - and maybe even give a shipping break for a CAG. Good Luck!
How does that Goozex thing work? Does it cost money?
It does if you're wanting a game off the site. But if you're putting the games up, it's only the shipping costs that you have to cover. It's great if you're wanting current-gen games. But if you want money, it's better to look elsewhere.

Sell them to me!

meh, what i'd do is check Amazon/Ebay for the price of each game, and bundle the lesser selling games together by system (Like the ones $1-15 each). The ones $15 and up sell seperate..

Goozex is great too

This is gonna be a long post (although not as long as it took me to compile the list, haha). This is basically everything I'd probably be wanting to sell minus some PC games that aren't boxed I didn't bother to add to the list as of yet, a few Game.Com games and any stragglers I didn't get down.

NOTE: This list DOES NOT include any controllers, accessories (such as Gameboy cases or PSOne's screens), or strategy guides (Xenogears, anyone :D)

I didn't go and look at all of my systems, but I will just list them off the top of my head right now before I throw the games list on here:

I know the list is long, but to those who read through it, much thanks, and much thanks to those who already gave me tips on what to do. I will use many of them when I excute my plan to sell all these bad boys.

Hey, if you decide to sell here, I'll be sure to buy something! You got a lot of good stuff on there!

Last edited by a moderator:
I've bolded(and marked in RED) the ones that I know off the top of my head may be worth something. Anything Mario, Metal Gear or Final Fantasy(if complete) should net a good amount, the same goes with the rest of the games. If you have any very old strategy guides(as you hint at with Xenogears), I'd list those for sale as well. The Virtual Boy by itself should sell for a decent buck or two.

Jack Bros is worth a lot of money, at least according to the Angry Video Game Nerd, since that was the only VB game he couldn't get ahold of to review

Thanks a lot Cheapest, you've been a big help.

Daft, I was pretty sure that was the rarest Virtual Boy game I had, thanks for the confirmation.

I know it's hard to gauge, but what do you you guys think would be a fair price for the lot?

I'd like to have like 2,000 when all is said and done...

$2K is more than fair, I would think. You have several valuable games, a large amount of consoles and so forth. I would def try to work out a deal for Ikaruga if you started piecing it out.

Try Gamegavel.com there are no listing fees but your items may take longer to sell than they would on Ebay.
everything for $10.
Enjoyed your freepost then?

Thanks Sinnbox, I'll look into it.

I'm a gamecube specialist! So I really have no idea about the other systems, but you do have a nice gamecube selection where most games would be enjoyable to any nintendo fan. The highlights are:

Gamecube

Baten Katos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
Battalion Wars
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
Def Jam Vendetta
Die Hard Vendetta
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Fzero GX
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
Ikaruga
Legend of Zelda: Orcania of Time + Master Quest
Mario Power Tennis

Medabots Infinity
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Metroid Prime
NBA Street
NBA Street V3
NBA Street Vol. 2
NFL Blitz 20-02
NHL Hitz 20-02
NHL Hitz Pro
Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 (Player’s Choice)
P.N.03
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 3: Nemisis (Small hole on back)
Resident Evil 4 Gamestop Collector’s Edition
Resident Evil Zero
Rocket Power: Beach Bandits
SSX Tricky
Soul Calibur II
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Tales Symphonia
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
Trigger Man
Viewtiful Joe

Also by highlights I mean their the games that will put the bigger bills in your wallet. Some games that have a sequel have a niche like the Soul Calibur, Final Fantasy, etc so they do have value while sports games tend to suck at reselling (exception is F-Zero, SSX Tricky).

You'll get a lot more than $2000 for this lot me thinks, if you stick in on eBay.

Are you interested in selling off some individual items? I'd be interested in a few things.

Selling it one by one will probably earn you more, though it takes a crapload of time shipping everything out and setting them up.

I personally say, throw the entire lot on ebay and just put a reserve of what your looking for. If it does not reach that amount, you simply don't have to sell it. If it reaches the amount and goes over, you do have to, but at that point you pretty much got what you wanted.

I updated the list to include almost all the accessories, and the PC games that were missing.

Alright, I've become conflicted. I have a guy on Craigslist willing to meet up and give me $2,000 for everything, but after talking to my father and seeing how shocked he was and him saying that he didn't want me to get shafted, I'm not sure if I should sell the lot to the CL buyer anymore. My father was a bit unrealistic (he said something about how he thought I should get 8 or 9 grand), he got me thinking.

Should I list the lot on ebay with a reserve and just see what happens? I was content with the $2,000 until my father got me thinking. It would be a close, quick meet up, and I would get the cash right away, so that's a plus. If you guys think I could get way more (and I mean WAY more, like at least $3,000) on eBay or something for the lot I'll probably give it a go. The only problem I see would be shipping it all out. Opinions?

I re-read the thread and I think IAmTheCheapestGamer had a good idea with leaving the rares out of the lot, should I do that if I choose to throw it up on the 'bay?

Just take the offer. With eBay, you have to set up the auction, wait for payment, then ship out the item...with the hope the buyer does not shaft you. Do not forget the eBay and PayPal fees.
If you go that route and do not make the 8/9 grand....tell your dad to cover the rest. :)

Why leave out the rares? Your bundle without the rares will not sell well (obvious, I know...but isn't your intention to sell off the collection as quickly/highest as possible?)
Good luck though.

Meet up with your guy near a bank. Get them to check the cash for you. 2 grand is a lot all at once, I'd hate to see you get hit with a bunch of counterfeit money.

Aside from that though, I'd take the deal- the time and effort of piecemealing out everything, buying shipping supplies, postage- even if you could get 3 grand splitting it up, you'd lose a hunk of that in S&H cost anyway.

(If you don't do it though, let me know how much you want for FF Dawn of Souls. ;))

That's a great idea; thanks. Suddenly I'm not feeling so bad about the CL deal... :bouncy:

that is one awesome collection of games!

if you decide to list on ebay, you'd have to do some search. for example, some games are worth more in bundles (.hack i believe is one of them). While others are better to go solo.

$2000 is more than fair.

If you decide to trade some here, I'd be interested as well. Keep us posted~ :D

4x Wavebird Controller (2 Gray 2 Silver)
Universal Component Cable (360, PS3, Wii)

Thanks, any suggestions are appreciated. I'm looking to sell as a set (through Craigslist most likely) although I know a few of them are probably going to be sold individually).
