I've got a large file that I need to send to my laptop to my PC. I've tried connecting an ethernet chord between the two and I'm pretty they know each other exists, but I'm having trouble getting them to cooperate. I tried using FTP and creating networks but it hasn't worked so far. Any ideas?

A crossover cable is needed to do that. Are you using Windows boxes? I know how to set up the xfers using two Linux boxes, but not Windows.
Either way once you get (or make) a crossover cable and connect the two machines you should be fine. Should be tuts online to help you through the process.
