"Serenity" - "Firefly" Series info + film discussion (*SPOILERS START ON POST #31*!)

well i know they were not thinking that this film would have a big weekend, but do ok due to word of mouth...and that there numbers will be decent in the end....they need to cover cost and then some to even think about doing a sequal...I will be going with my wife, but gotta watch the rest of season 1 first

they were promoting this movie like crazy with the "people drove miles just to watch the early release" commercials. it was enjoyable, the characters were original, and might I add that the female mechanic is my cup of tea (ever since flash forward). definitely see a sequel in the future, maybe even a new season if the fanbase is there.

Does this number include DVD sales, or just box office gate

I don't know about everywhere else - but here, in the biggest theatre in town it was on *1* screen, with a whopping total of 5 showings on Friday. If it was like that everywhere else, then I'd say 10 mil is damn good.

In my area, most of the theatres that had it, had it only on 1 screen with 4 - 6 showing a day. There were 2 theatres, about 20 min or so from me, that had it on 2 screens and playing a lot.

It could have done better, but it was a respectable weekend. Next weekend really is going to tell the future of the series. Serenity was at 2,188 theaters and did $10,086,680. Flightplan was on 3,424 and did $14,805,739. So Serenity had a higher average take per theater, but Flightplan was in the second week. If Serenity can hold the number next weekend there is a chance for the future development of the series....

Ouch, I hope the love it abroad

Serenity rocks. Easily the best movie I've seen all year. I plan on seeing it one or two more times while it's in theaters.

This is what Nikki Rocco (Universal's head of distrubution) said about Serenity making $10 Million dollars this weekend:
"We are satisfied," Rocco said. "The opening is where we thought it would be. The fan base turned out. We're hoping more will turn out in the future. I think over $10 million is a lot of business for a niche appeal picture, and I think the ancillary [DVD, etc.] will be spectacular. I'd say over 40 percent [of moviegoers] were the fans. And there was probably another 30 percent that had not watched the show but had heard of it." Rocco highlighted San Francisco and Seattle among the cities that had strong turn outs, although she would not speculate on whether Serenity was successful enough to merit a sequel.

That's good to hear that they're at least positive about it. I was thinking about it like this, sure $10 million is underwhelming box office but put it into perspective. In the day of $200 million big budget movies, this little thing cost a measely $40 million, and made back 1/4 of its cost on opening weekend. I'm thinking that its far from box office blockbuster but on the other hand it isn't a flop on "The Island" proportions.

Well one thing that helped was a lack of real competition. Whoever had the idea for the release dat did a decent job. The only real competitor was Into the Blue which everyone could tell from the trailers it was going to suck and nobody went to see it. A history of Violence and Greatest Game Ever Played both debuted on less than 1400 screens. History of Violence was actually the average per theater winner, so if they put it on even more screens that may hurt Serenity's box office draw but probably not too much.

Last weekend and this weekend and maybe even the weekend of the 14th will be the time for Serenity to seize success, hopefully they'll put it on more screens in that time. It's got essetinally 3 good weeks of no direct competition and no really big films, after that with more and more "blockbuster" type films will be hitting screens, so it'll be difficult to gain too much more in box office sales.

Though someone pointed out on another board the real competition to all the films isn't what's in the theatres, its what's on the small screen. I don't follow it, but aren't there several major sports seasons underway like baseball and the like? Supposedly "The Island" actually did fairly well overseas, that is pretty encouraging.

I think that could be right to a degree. There's only two major sports now and none of them really take over a friday night (and there's not too much on TVs fridays either), but something like football could hinder a sunday performence. Also, I don't know that alot of sports fans where the same kind of movie goer that would attend somehting like Sereinty (Typically those interested in sci-fi are not absolutely crazy sports fans that would chuck other plans to watch a game). Though it did have a largely male target audience, so that assumption could be wrong.

But I think the world of DVDs on the small screen draws away business too, box office sales in general have been on a slide for well over a year (even more with the exception of a couple films) and I think even some people in the film industry will tell you that DVDs have become the # 1 competitor to box office numbers. It certainly helps though that there aren't any other sci-fi/action films or big blockbuster films coming along so early in Serenity's life cycle though.

I saw this movie opening night, I can't wait to see it again. I have been waiting for this movie for a year and a half now. I was not disappointed at all!

From the moment the camera swept across the Serenity at the first part of the movie, I was hooked in and was never let go. This is easily one of my top 3 movies of the year and I will definitly be seeing this again. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

[quote name='iufoltzie']Love the film, I would love it if the second week somehow moved the film into the number one spot.

Universal is hoping to draw the hardcore fans back for a second time this weekend. Anyone who sends in a box office ticket dated oct7-9 will have a chance to win a signed copy of the movie poster by the whole cast plus a prize pack.

It's a nice idea, but only as a supplement, hardcore fans couldn't save it at the office the first week. The only way to get the numbers up is to touch people who have a neutral opinion of the film, those who have no idea what Firefly is and only know that there is a Sci-fi film called Serenity. A few advertisements detailing all the positive reviews and pushing the dramatic angle of the film would probably help with that.

ah man...ya mean there already getting rid of the poster after the first weekend...

Slight difference though, this one is the "bus shelter" poster, oversized and all. They have fewer slots for these, and normally take them out when a movie arrives so they can put in new ones.

So dissapointing to see it only hit 10 mil. I was hoping for atleast nearing 20 mil. I hope that the few people who saw it who where not fans, will tell friends and family about it and make this upcoming weekend a strong one.

Side questions:
-When do they add the profits from during the week to the total?
-When do they total the weekends profits? I saw by sunday afternoon they already had that 10 million marked down. But I knew alot of people who went sunday night. So is that not counted?

They have sophisticated models which can pretty much closely predict what the Sunday take will be, then they usually release the actual numbers monday or Tuesday. The link below till tell you actual box office totals so far for Serenity. the summary page. Then you can click the various tabs for daily totals and overseas totals.

Thanks Mr owl. I always looked for a site like that. I always wonder what the movie costs etc, and most sites dont give that out. Great site, thanks man.

Yeah Boxofficemojo.com is the best for numbers. Weekdays numbers are usualy posted about 4pm the next day. So friday around 4 they should have thurs. number posted + the take for the first week...

Does anyone know how big of a release this movie is getting? I'm in a small town but we usually get the big movies opening weekend. I just checked and Serenity is still listed as Coming Soon. I thought they were having a bigger push for it. I had to go out of town last weekend to see it. I was hoping to catch it again locally this weekend but I guess not.

Theare count for the upcoming weekend

Serenity is getting a net gain of 1 extra theatre this weekend.

Its sad to see how many great reviews this movie is getting from the critics and its down 56% for the 2nd friday. Universal did a great job getting the fanbase roaring, but it doesn't seem like they marketed the movie at all to the everyday crowd. I haven't seen a single Serenity movie ad on TV or anything. Well I am going to see it a second time tomorrow, still hoping for a sequel...

it is to bad that they didn't do that well this past weekend. I have seen a lot of TV ads for this movie on both major broadcast channels, and the other cable channels.

Really its up to the international crowd after this past weekends results. At least it was number 1 in the UK where it was just released.

Finally saw the last few episodes (thanks Netflix) so now I've just got to get to the theater before it disappears (the movie...not the theater).

Finally saw the movie and it was excellent. The numbers from the theater probably won't be enough, but the DVD sales may bring enough in to warrant a sequel...

Went to viewing Number 2 this afternoon, it was still really enjoyable and I was able to spend more time looking around at the various touches.

I also finished reading the novelization of the book this week after having other browncoats recommend it to me, and it actually is quite good. It goes into a lot more detail and better clarifies things as well as includes scenes which were in the shooting script but cut from the final film. For instance, did you know the original concept of the Operative had him wearing wire-frame glasses?

I finished my third viewing today, and I'm still finding new bits here and there. Might try to catch it one last time. It's only in 887 theaters nationwide as of Friday, so if any of you have been wanting to see it, but haven't, this is the time.

Should be getting my Firefly box set this week some time, so I'm looking forward to that as well. I need more grounding in the 'verse.
