Serious Xbox 360 Help Needed!! 360 Reading Certain Games and Others Not. GOW issue

hiccupleftovers

CAGiversary!
Basically I just signed in tonight and had to do the 360 update. Ok fine. Everything was working and I got to play CoD3, but then I go to play Gears of War and this is pretty much a brand new copy and the game won't start. I try another game, this time Dead Rising and it won't work either. I blow on it and then I put it back into the Xbox and it loads up fine this time. I try and GRAW and Marvel Ultimate Alliance and both work fine. I try CoD3 again and everything is a go. I put it in Gears of War and it won't read the damn thing. Anyone can help? The disc looks pretty much flawles..

Edit:

I've found a video on Youtube that details what has been occurring to me. In this video the author manages to get into the game, but mine keeps getting stuck at the first part of the video saying reading and then it just says open tray.

Sounds like it's dying. Happened to mine.. it kept saying "Reading" whenever I put a Game or DVD in, then it would change to "Open tray". It did that before Thanksgiving and it was out of warranty.. didn't have the $ to repair it.. they changed it to free on Christmas.. I called and shipped it off and am getting it back Tuesday.. hope it works. I'd go ahead and call in a repair order, it's about one step away from the drive completely dying on you like mine did.

Seriously, you think so? Ahh shit:bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb: This was a brand new system around August or so and never had a problem until now. Was playing CoD3 for most of the night too and that game works fine. It's only on Gears of War like I said that it doesn't want to read. I actually hadn't played Gears of War for quite sometime actually since I've been so enamored with CoD3. So is this basically coffin support and to call that 1-800-4my-xbox number to have them send me a box and shipping?

How ironic.. mine was from August 8th and I never had a problem prior to that either. I bought mine in August, rather, the born on date was late May/early June.

Call it, tell them your drive is dead (spare the details, just tell them it won't read games or DVD's). They'll ask for the serial number, your name, address, etc. You'll get a box. Instructions will be inside, there's also a label inside that you put over the top of the original shipping label. MS takes care of all fees, including shipping, the only thing you have to do is call the UPS guy to schedule a pickup.

Gears did it for me.. sorta.. I'd be playing and the drive would make a loud ass grinding sound.. the game continued to play, no scratches on the game, so I thought nothing of it.. went to put in Tony Hawk's Project 8, no dice. Fear, nothing. Gears, nada. Smackdown, zilch.. but it played audio CD's just fine.

The only silver lining, if there is any, is that since your system isn't completely dead, you can still play demos and arcade games. Your wait is a week or less.. mine was a month (since it was out of warranty and the year thing didn't kick in until Dec. 24th or 25th). I survived on demos, you can too.

I purchased my 360 in August and it is now on its way back to MS. Manufacture date was in late June. I figured they would have had their problems worked out by then, but I guess not.

Mine started freezing while loading, and very soon thereafter we got the 3 red lights - hardware failure.

I just tested it up and I noticed that if my 360 starts up with Gears of War already in the disc tray than it works fine. Otherwise if I play one game and switch to it, it just won't play. It won't play if I turn on my Xbox and then place it in the tray.

This is the only game that I have issues with :bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb: I've tested all my other games and I don't get this problem. Is this the disc drive/my Xbox failing me? I've never encountered such a weird problem where only one game will not play when i put it in the drive. I get that weird reading error that was shown in the video. Should I just send it in to Microsoft? What's the procedure since that stupid 1800-4my-xbox gave me just a voice system?

My personal opinion is that this sounds like an issue with the drive because it sounds similar to the infamous PS2 DRE. Has anybody found a solution to fix this game from not reading? Doing a search of Gears of War disc read error on Google brings up plenty of pages with similar stories to mine. Since it's just this game could it be that the laser is not aligning properly or something of that ilk? Maybe the laser is not clean? If it's either of those two than it should be a simple operation to just pop the system open and clean the laser/push it a couple of notches for it to align similar to how to fix the PS2. Any ideas?

Even if it is something simple, it's under warranty. Let Microsoft fix it, if for no other reason than maybe they'll get serious about fixing the hardware if they see how many issues they're getting.

Ordinarily there's nothing you can fix in an optical drive, and if you open it, your warranty is void.

Yaeh I'm just going to do that. Actually, I just spoke to a guy on the phone and they're sending me a box in 4-5 days and then when all is said and done it should be repaired and back in my hands in 2-3 weeks. Thank god I don't have to pay shipping. This will probably kill my status in CoD3 but oh well. I'll lose a month of Live, but it could be worse and hey, they're paying for it. The guy on the phone wanted me to troubleshoot with him, but I had already tried that many times. The only thing I hadn't done was bring some games to test out at a friend's house. Still, Gears of War not working, my friend's Xbox Live Arcade Disc (kind of stupid) that he lent me wouldn't read, and my Dead Rising was giving on and off problems.

With my PS2 my console was practically a launch console (6-8 months after launch actually) and the thing was already out of warranty and outside of the DRE extended warranty. It was really easy to work with and open up and it was also nice that there was a plenty of FAQs on how to do it online.

Your drive isn't reading games, so your conclusion is that it's an issue with the drive.

Good job, Sherlock.
I blow on it
That only works on the NES, chief.

If I sent my 360 into repair can I keep my hard drive, and what happens to my live sub?

My has been saying open tray on some games.

You send in the console. Nothing else.

I have a feeling it's the recent Dashboard Update and / or Gears of War patch.

I had the problem right after the patch, but it went away.

what kind of drive was it? a samsung or hitachi? hitachi has weird holes in it, while samsung looks normal. my samsung 360 was getting disc read errors a and freezing up. i managed to exchange it back to TRU before the 30 days and now i have a hitachi drive 360, which currently works fine.

i was just wondering whether their may be a connect to the type of drive you have. o and the manufacturer's date of the broken one was august '06 and my new one is october '06.

There is this funky sound that it makes now when I put in games when it tries to load them, but I haven't noticed an increase in scratches, etc. on the discs.

Let me say that again, I blow on the disc to get the dust off of it. I leave Dead Rising out because I come back to it time to time and I'm just too lazy to go and get the box, etc. out of storage.

I hope they actually test it extensively, or just swap it with a new drive or whatever. Now I'm scared they're going to just throw in a single game, have it read, and go "IT'S FIXED!" :whistle2:/

I don't understand why MS is having DVD drive issues. It seems like the original Xbox was working great after they switched to different DVD drives.

Oh well..I just mailed in my warranty card today. 3 years of warranty should cover me until a new system will only cost about $150.

Good question. Wish they would just switch to better/quieter suppliers. I'm sure the cost adds up over the millions of consoles they make, but then having to ship tons of them both ways adds up too (and generates ill will, and hurts game sales, etc.)

Agreed. So for anyone who has had drive issues with their 360, upon return what differences did you notice from your 360? Did they totally replace the disc drive or was it something more subtle and less noticeable (ala under the hood)?
