Wow...just read something bizarre on Seth Green's official site. Apparently, this is a Butterfinger promotional game. That the muggers stole his vintage Butterfinger and it's up to the public to help him find it. See for yourself:
http://www.sethgreenonline.com/ (front page shows a note from Seth regarding "the contest")
http://www.dudewheresmybar.com/ (shows a horrendously awkward commercial for "the contest")
I don't know if this makes me think the mugging is fake, or convince me even more that it was real, but you guys should check this out because it just feels really weird, out of place, and poorly planned. It makes me wonder if the incident actually was real and this is just a clever PR spin. My reasons for thinking this are:
1. If the purpose of the "mugging" video is to establish some kind of pretext for a candybar wrapper game, why make it so realistic, with no nod to Butterfinger, or even a superimposed yellow object that the "muggers" were taking?
2. What is the purpose of the rant video? What benefit does that give to this contest? As others have mentioned, some people will view Green negatively because of it. Also, although he didn't swear much in the rant, he did tell the security guard to "move your ass to the unemployment line, dude". That's the attitude Butterfinger wants looming over their promotion?
3. Green's acting in the "haha, I fooled you" video, selling the Butterfinger promotion is about 100 times worse than the rant video. It feels ridiculously forced, and I felt awkward the entire time I watched it.
I don't know. I could be completely wrong, but if this was really a planned promotion, it has to be one of the worst executed I've ever seen. I can hardly see any ways that this would benefit Butterfinger, and they're allegedly the ones sponsoring the whole thing? Something just seems off.
