Setting up an Ipod in my car

I'm looking for recommendations on FM transmitters, or any relatively cheap alternatives to set my Nano up in my car. I know it's not the best sound quality possible, but my CD head doesn't have an auxillary plug. I'm willing to spend about $100, so if anyone out there has had good/bad experience with specific brands or models I'd love to hear it.

i've use the iRiver Fm transmitter for the past 6 months or so. I have no complaints so far. Works well once you find an open channel. I'd recommend it and under $40, its well under your $100 limit. Look into it.

use the dlo transdock or transpod or whatever its called. u can find it in the apple store or bestbuy, or any other major electronic stores. the thing is huge, and is most identifiable by its extension arm. it's about 95 bucks, i think its worth it. but whatever you do, DONT get the iTrip, it gets too much static.

If you must go FM transmitter (and I don't recommend it) I say do the Monster one.

I recommend for $100 to get a new stereo with a aux plug to hook your ipod right into your stereo.

Word. I was going to buy an extra tape deck for my Samsung (which is now fucked up, thanks Microsoft.. assholes) and the tape cassette-based headphone adapter, but it turns out that Best Buy has decent stereos with the AUX jack for like $100-$120. The cable is like $3 if you don't have one. Just get a new stereo, it's the best route. :D No install fee, either, at least in my car.

Don't mess with the FM transmitters, guys... hardwire it into your head unit's aux port; well worth the effort. Also, you may want to consider a ground loop isolator if you're doing this.

I couldn't agree with this more. I know you basically said it's not what you're looking for, and it's probably more money and effort than you thought you wanted to spend, but goddamn is it worth it. I did it in my car a few months ago, and it's the closet thing I've had to a life-changing experience-forget any important life lessons or anything, having your MP3 player properly set up in your car is one of the few things to make you a better person.

Seriously though, it's easily the best option, and if you don't want to do it, at least go with a cassete adapter. It might not sound great, but it's leagues above FM transmiters, which from my experience cause way too much hassle and most are pieces of junk.

Thanks for the info about the FM Transmitters. Are they really THAT bad? I don't have an AUX jack in my car, but my brother does and his iPod sounds great. I'm thinking that might be the best option, but I haven't decided if I want to shell out all that money.

I can't speak for all FM transmitters, so maybe I've just had bad experiences, but I've only heard and experienced bad things. Quite a few of my friends have them, and either the quality sucks, they pick up other channels, a combination of both, or can't even get their music to transmit. But take my ranting with a grain of salt, cause I'm by no means an expert.

Depends on how attached to your current deck you are. If you're thinking it's "eh", just throw down an hundred for a new one with an AUX jack. :D

Damn, you guys are making me want to buy a new deck with the aux in. I have the Monster cable, and while it's not bad, the sound could be a lot better.

Thanks seanr1221, great post!

I keep hearing the cheap Belkin stuff isn't very good, not enough power to drown out static.

I'd replace the head but I've got a factory installed six cd changer, it's a Bose system and I'm pretty happy with that, it's hard to convince myself to go with something else, especially when I may sell the car in a couple years.

Let me see if I got this right, it's possible to hardwire the iPod into the car even if I don't have an auxillary jack on the face of the CD player?
