Sharper Image gift card are now worthless

I hate gift cards for many reasons such as people knowing how much you spent of the person's gift, and you can't get deals on them (usually) and because if something like this happens you are out the money.

I read on SD, Brookstone is honoring the giftcards and giving 25% off your purchase as well

You may want to check with your state. Here in PA certain giftcards that are not redeemed MUST be turned over to the state as unclaimed property. Here it is only required to be done by companies that have cards that have fees and/or expiration dates and must be done two years after the expiration date.

You can't rip the tags off of pillows either!

Check that... I'm pretty sure they are only giving 25% off. That is, whether you have a 10$ GC or a 2000$ GC, you get 25% off your Brookstone purchase instead of the money that was on your gift card.

That's why I give cash. If my brother wants to go out and buy crack, he can without the hassle of buying something from The Sharper Image and then pawning it!

EDIT: Until the economy collapses and the money is just as worthless as the giftcards. But that's a different story for a different day.

Indeed. I never understood the difference between giving cash and a gift card. Both are "impersonal," in my opinion. So, why do people think it's so warm and fuzzy to give a gift card, but cold to give cash? I would much, much rather get cash, for the excellent reasons listed above.

Another reason why you should hate Republicans for amending personal bankruptcies to the point of irrelevance, but at the same time allowing businesses to get away with this kind of nonsense (at the federal level, at least).

if people are gonna give gift cards, they should give prepaid ones instead like the American Express ones, although they charge for activation. still, theyre better than normal store gift cards and they look really coolio with the little mock markings of a credit card in the front

I agree with this statement.

What's sad is if you had 1 penny or $100,000 on it, you'll get 25% off.

Sharper Image's rival, Merrimack, N.H.-based Brookstone Inc., is capitalizing on the situation. It announced last week that it would exchange Sharper Image gift cards for 25 percent off any purchase, no matter the amount of the gift card or the cost of the item.

I bought two really nice ocillating fans for about $50 (I think...) anyway they occasionally had good deals and quality products.

Sad this happens.
Same could someday soon apply to Gamecrazy store credit...
Nah. It can be converted into Hollywood or Movie Gallery credit. If the company becomes on the market, GS will buy them and convert all credit over.. that's what they did with Rhino and store credit. But there was only a certain window they gave. It was nice of them, they didn't have to do anything, but they did.

Nice and Gamestop in the same paragraph=DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!

Seriously though, I just read about this this morning and all I have to say is DAMN. This is why I try to use my credit and gift cards as quickly as possible at the stores I have them for, since you never know when that chain may go belly up and pull this trick.

That and the fact that lots of stores and restaurants have "expiration dates" on GCs now. If you don't use them after a certain period of time they start subtracting $10 a month until your card in empty.

That's like the Vanilla Visa gift card I got for my birthday, which 'expires' next month. Luckily, I already used all but maybe .05 off of it, so it's not like I'll lose alot on it.

I noticed that alot though, the expiration dates on gc's and the like. Luckily, most stores I deal with don't do that(FYE, for one) or I'd be trying to use my $57-60 in credit already.

I also use up gift cards ASAP... my vanilla visa I got from my dad for christmas? Used it on other persons gifts that week... most of the gift cards I buy for others are larger retailers like Best Buy or Target

Actually, aren't most stores moving *away* from expiry dates on gift cards?
That said, getting 25% SI's already ridiculous prices thanks to having a gift card is ridiculous--but potentially better than nothing.

I gave my mom a gift card for the mall since she's such a picky shopper. She misplaced it for a while and when she went to use it it had lost a ton of it's value. Total ripoff. As stated before in the thread, I'm a cash man now.

Nice thing about being in Washington state... it's illegal for gift cards to expire or have 'matinence fees', plus if you complete a transaction and there's less than $5 left on the gift card, the store is required to give the balance in cash if requested. (That's gift cards only, not store credit.)

I pray no one ever asks for that balance where I work... they updated our registers, but not the gift-card redeem procedures. Quite simply, we don't know how to cash out a gift card anymore. #-o Gonna be fin if/when that comes up...

Customers will never forgive Staples if they don't eventually honor these gift cards. Even if they are able to make it through bankruptcy without folding they will still have lost a lot of customers.
Are you fucking kidding me, I just got like $100 worth, now I better buy something, fuck.
It already too late.

Not in Cali - all credit/cash value on any gift cards is practically permanent. Although you have to be careful with where the card is originally issued, there is some scam with mastercard labeled gift cards sold at Walgreens, Rite Aide etc. that has them 'issued' from Georgia (and allows them to screw you over in such fashion).

DAMN!!! YOU got served!

I was about to ask, how many people could this really affect? I mean, it's freaking Sharper Image, NOBODY shops there (hence the fact that they are now in bankruptcy)

I went to Roseville, Ca and they still have a store there.

Honestly, unless there is a deal, Giftcards are worthless. They scream out "Limit your Money" and if thats not reason enough, they fuck you up with something like this.
