Shenmue on the Saturn?

This is true. Originally, Shenmue was going to be on the ill-fated Saturn. It died months before it was going to be announced. The game was on the backburner until Dreamcast came out. It really didn't look too bad, did it?

I'm surprised it was even in development for the Saturn at all. Looked pretty good given the hardware, but the big question is how well would it have played, given how it turned out on the Dreamcast?

They also had a Shenmue Saturn video as an unlockable on Shenmue II for Xbox.

Looks like they were pretty far along. Its too bad, a lot of the Saturn's best games either came out too late or never made it at all.

Yeah that looks amazing especially for the sega saturn hardware. Also I have beaten the first Shenmue and there are scenes in that video that I don't recall. Probably edited out stuff or maybe its just been too long. Probably both actually. lol

Some of those scenes became part of Shenmue 2, they broke the story up later into 2 games.

You know I think I remember hearing that before, thanks for the remider. I have Shenmue 2 for xbox started to play and some how stoped playing, I think its time to start playing it again.

With all this talk about Shenmue, I should try to start playing that game on my DC. I bought it when it first came out and it sat for awhile, then discovered the first disc has a deep scratch so the game would always crash after a certain point. Maybe I'll try to pick up another copy on the cheap and start playing it again...

picked it up for 5 bucks 4 years ago during the final days of the dream cast game shelf life. Played it for 45 mins, then stopped..never picked it up again :|
I ahve still yet to play the DC version. I bought it around 3 years ago and never played it.

Sorry if this might be a repost but here's some footage of Shenmue running on Saturn. I had no idea that this was even considered back then! It's very respectable looking. If they had released it, I would have picked it up. :)

Too bad Saturn died out just when the 3D capabilities of the system started to really show its stuff.
I saw the vid on my copy of Shenmue 2 for the DC... the game actually did not look very good on the Saturn.... luckily it got turned into something great, but the game just didn't look like it could've been done on the Saturn.

You have to consider it within the context of that era... It looks great for a Saturn game that was so early in development that it was cancelled months before it would even have been announced. Not many finished PSX games look a lot better.

Do it, it is one the games that I actually played twice. This is VERY rare for me.

I agree. I thought it looked very impressive for that system. I was like "Wow" when the video was panning around the HK scenery. Wish I coulda had that to show my Saturn off back in the day... ;)

i found the strategy guide for shenmue made it much more fun to play. I didn't use it to get secrects or anything but there are a couple parts that are a little irritating.

On a side note. I recall shenmue vcd did come out for saturn it was just videos though on the disc jap only.

wouldn't it have been cool if it did come out though , then when you play the saturn at the dojo it would have been all the sweeter.
