Hey guys, this may not belong here - I apologize if this is the case. (feel free to move thread.)

Anyhow, I'm leaving to go to Beijing to cheer on the Canadian Olympians. I'm also heading to Japan.

Just asking for suggestions/thoughts of good deals versus what we find in Canada.

Cheers!

Beijing - you probably wont find much
Hong Kong - they will probably have lots of new games, but watch for different regions
Japan - everything is expensive... so make sure you have a big wallet.

I was just in Beijing 5 weeks ago. You really won't find any deals there -- the sad truth is that nearly all video games being sold in China are bootleg, even in a big city like Beijing.

Beijing - probably nothing

Hong Kong - Sham Shui Po: Golden Shopping Center

Word of caution: if you are not used to "Asian-style" computer/electronic shopping, you have to be aware. That shopping center consists of HUNDREDS of mini booths all crammed into an indoor space.

Japan: Things aren't as expensive as you think.

Tokyo - Akihabara: From the JR Akihabara Station, heading to the "Akihabara Electric Town" exit, there is a small shop that is sandwiched between two larger shops that sell cell phones, I don't remember the store's name, but they specialize in discounted games. Thats where I got my Ouendan way way back in 2005 for a bargain basement price.

Other option is to go to Bic Camera or Yodobashi Camera and go to their game section, most of their stuff will be regular priced but they do have specials sometimes. If you go to Yodobashi Camera, its best to go to their largest store in Akihabara. There is no Bic Camera in Akihabara.

Tokyo - Shinjuku:

There is a Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera in Shinjuku. Yodobashi Camera is near the JR Shinjuku Station South Exit.

Bic Camera is near the West Exit of Shinjuku Station on the top floors of the Odakyu Dept. Store building.

Tokyo - Ikebukuro:

Bic Camera only, East Exit of Ikebukuro then walk left until you see it, I believe it is beside a McDonalds.

I lived in Tokyo for a year. In general, you will pay a premium for recently released games, new or used. But if you're looking for stuff that's a generation or more old, you are in luck, my friend. Even crazy awesome retro stuff like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6 are only 300-500 yen (3-5 dollars). There are a bunch of great stores out there selling used stuff (and used is generally pristine shape, so don't worry about that) quite cheaply, but my favourite was Book Off. Sells tons of great used games, and there are stores in almost every neighbourhood (Akihabara included). Also sells CDs and books and such, but c'mon, it's all about the games.

Oh yeah, it will help if you can read a bit of Japanese, mainly because used games are almost always accompanied by either a sticker that completely explains what is included and what shape it's in, or just an explanation of what is not included for some stores. If you can't read any, and don't know anyone that can, then if you see a bunch of games that just have price tags, and some with price tags (maybe lower than normal) but also a sticker with writing on it, the writing probably describes something that is not included (manual, box, etc). That's just a general guideline though, it's not always the case.

Yea check out the Computer Arcade in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong as mentioned by DoCoMo. It's a lot of fun and you may find a few good deals (Watch out for the porn shops though). It depends what you are looking for however...Last time I was there I didn't buy anything. If your looking to buy a second hand PSP or DS then you will find no beter price in the world, but new PS3 or 360 Games will be similar price as to what you will find in Canada. However have a look, and don't buy the first copy you see from the first store. Stores in Hong Kong are tiny and there is garunteed to be 10 more stores around the corner with the same merchandise and cheaper.

In Beijing don't expect to find too much. I found it pretty consistent around all of mainland China that they get the very short end of the stick when it comes to video games. It is possible to get some good deals, but don't expect to find them unless you have local friends that can help.

If you are interested in picking up some consoles or in particular, hand held consoles, then you will be in for a treat if you shop around. Just don't get your hopes up too high for great prices on games, because if you shop around Canada you can find better deals.

Hey guys,

I just got back and thank you all for your help!!

Hong Kong wasn't overly impressive for stuff. Beijing had some pretty cheap stuff and R4 cards (and the like) were everywhere. they also had some very nice (reissue) transformers.

Tokyo was crazy. I'm so sad that there are SOOOOO many games that never some to North America. It's probably a good thing I can't read/know Japanese - otherwise I'd never come home/buy TONS of stuff.

The Japanese strategy guides also put anything we have here to same. There were multiple volumes for each game. They tended to be smaller (like the double jump books) but much larger. For big games like Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy and such they would be as big as 1000 pages!!

Again, thank you all for your help. EVERY gamer must make a pilgrimage Akihabara at least once in their lives. :bouncy:
