Should CAG take a stand against SquareEnix?

RedvsBlue

CAGiversary!
I just found out that SquareEnix is the only company that owns the rights to Final Fantasy games. This is very clearly a monopoly and we should not let it stand. I say that we, as a community, take a stand against this. I say we boycott everything that SquareEnix makes to make them pay for this anti-competitional move.

Oh, and yes, this is mocking the EA thread.
Oh, and yes, this is mocking the EA thread.
That line ruined it. Try again.

And just to get it out of the way, owning the rights to a series you've created doesn't begin to compare to spending millions of dollars to garner exclusives to destroy your competition.

This isn't funny at all, actually, this is stupid. And I have a feeling this will only cause MORE posts of this nature.

Anyways.. Squeenix.. I like Squeenix!

I'd like them even more if they made a damn Parasite Eve 3..

But first we need to take a stance against LucasArts- they're clearly running a monopoly by having exclusive rights to the Star Wars license. Think of how the quality of so many Star Wars games have suffered because of a lack of competition. We should stop Lucasarts now before they produce a bunch of shoddy Episode III games and then use that money to buy out everyone else and destroy gaming.

Should CAG take a stand against MADD?
Should CAG take a stand against the NRA?"
Should CAG take a stand against the CDC?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Damn right we should. Why should they have disease fighting exclusivity?

This lame thread is the reason they should teach about Intelectual Property law in high school and not wait until college.

Well is it EA fault that all the smaller game companies, as well as the NFL and ESPN decide to join with them...EA might have the money to buy everything, but that doesn't mean these companies need to sell...if they are in finacial trouble, then that is the fault of us here at CAG, not wanting to pay full price for a game, or their fault for overbudgeting crap games

You've obviously never crossed paths with me in the past otherwise this thread would be no big surprise, just more of the same.

All video game companies should BURN!
BURN AND FLAME IN HELL!
No, but it will be funny.
Sorry, but it isn't funny. It's like comparing apples and oranges. If you are going to do it, make it witty...

At least if your going to have a criticism post have it make sense. Apples and oranges? That's the best way you can come up with insulting my sense of humor?

Your mom is witty!

Yea, thats like saying we should sue Nintendo for keeping link, mario and samus on their consoles only. There is a BIG diffrence from owning your own license and buying a license to prevent any other company from maing an NFL or AFL (EA recently got exclusive rights with them too, so ESPN cant use THAT to compensate for not having the NFL either) game.

Maybe we could take a stand as a community against racism or low infant mortality or drug use... But I find it simply demeaning and silly to 'take a stand' against a 'monopoly' of a software company.
FF is an RPG. There's plenty of other companies that make RPGs out there. RPGs arent exclusive to SE.
And sports games aren't exclusive to EA.

Coincidence?

THANK YOU.

You speak reason on a board filled with craziness.

I say we boycott Ford Truck Racing for monopolizing the likenesses of Ford trucks in video games. How can anyone compete, when Ford truck drivers will obviously only want to get the game with Ford trucks in it?

The NFL was complicit in the deal. And no one owns the exclusive right to make a football game, just not the NFL football game with players names. It's exactly the same situation as the Final Fantasy IP rights. The NFL owns the name, the NFL sold them. Blame the NFL, not big, bad EA. They have every right to try to squash their competition, using any means necessary, as long as it's legal.

I can't believe I'm saying this (well it has been a crazy day) but I'm actually with him on this one.
I'd like them even more if they made a damn Parasite Eve 3..
I'm even more with him now. I couldn't agree more or how about an Einhander 2 while you are at it Square Enix or at least more Valkyrie Profile and Dragon Warrior and Chrono Trigger/Cross.

So you want to 'boycott square unix" that seems like a pretty silly idea to begin with, but you know what to post such a pedestrian idea on the day we recognize the stuggle of Martin Luther King seems 'super silly'.

Lets boycott Atari for tying up the Dungeons & Dragons license. Hasn't anyone else noticed that fantasy adventures games other than Atari's have completely dried up because of their exclusive control of D&D.

What? World of Warcraft? What about it?

No I don't really want to boycott Square Enix. I'm not boycotting any company over a stupid video game. You're right, there's much more important things in life than video games.

Blasphemer! Persecute!

Final Fantasy is an origional property created by Square and owned and operated by Square Enix.

The National Football Association is independantly owned and operated and has been around much longer than Electronic Arts. Heck there were licensed NFL football games, such as Intelevision NFL Football, existed before John Madden NFL Football for the Apple IIe.

Before Electronic Arts had the exclusive license to NASCAR, the only console developer who had an exclusive sports license was Konami with the Japense baseball clubs.

It is fair to boycott a video game featuring exclusive non-fictional license to something as simple and in grained in our commercial culture as a sports leauge. Final Fantasy is a fictional piece written and owned by a software company. I doubt Electronic Arts is going to buy out both the NFL and ESPN companies any time soon.

Plenty of gamers appreciate funner football games from such developers as Tecmo and Visual Concepts.

Hense the sense of boycott of Electronic Arts for exclusive rights to NFL licensed games in next football season.

Did Tecmo ever bother with an NFL license? They had NFLPA licensing but never bothered with the NFL stuff to have uniforms and logos. Strangely, the Tecmo games are fondly remembered despite that deadly deficiency.

You also haven't answered the issue of media licenses (which the NFL is, anyone can do a football game without NFL logos) going exclusively to individual companies are very common. EA has Harry Potter locked up but nobody is whining about that. Nor is anyone demanding that Activision share the MArvel license with other publishers.
