Should I buy a PS2 now or wait for price drops on the PS3?

I got back into gaming in early '05 after a long absence. I purchased a GameCube as my sole console for a couple reasons: 1) Cheaper than the X-Box and PS2, 2) I started out with the old school NES as a kid so I was familiar with the Nintendo brand, 3) Mario/Zelda franchises.

Anyway. I've enjoyed the Cube, but have recently really gotten into RPGs. GameCube, as I'm sure you all know, is rather scantily clad when it comes to RPG titles. The PS2 is not.

I know the PS3 will be released soon and will be backwards compatible, but the rumored $500-$600 price tag is a little steep for my taste. While I enjoy gaming, I can't see myself sinking that much $$ into the console alone. I don't see myself buying a PS3 until it drops to at least $250. So, my question, do I buy a PS2 now or hold out for the PS3? If I do buy a PSP2 now, how hard is it going to be to find games 18 months - 2 years down the line?

Why do you need a PS3 to play PS2 RPGs? Anyway, there's no compelling reason to wait as the only way the price on a PS3 will drop is if it's a massive failure (who knows) or it is well into it's product life cycle (2 to 4 years after it's introduced).

I don't, I'm just wondering whether I should wait for the next gen to buy a Playstation product.

just get a ps2 now. arn't they like 130 now? they are also going to be comming out with a silver one I think, so you could wait for that one if you want.

The silver PS2 looks awesome. OP, I also have a GC and will be finally venturing into PS2 territory next month when the silver PS2 releases. The PS2 still has a decent amount of life left in it, and it shouldn't be hard to find games in a couple years. With the popularity of the system, used games are and will be plentiful. Also, even though the X-Box 360 is out now (and has been out for awhile), there are still plenty of X-Box games on the shelves. I'd imagine the same thing will happen with the PS2. The PS3 isn't going to drop to $250 anytime soon, might as well get the PS2 now and enjoy it, then upgrade to the PS3 in a few years. You'll avoid all the inevitable launch glitches and save some money.

You will be able to get your money's worth out of a PS2 easily. You have almost a decade (more if you get PS1 games) of cheap (under $10), awesome games to play, especially if you are looking for RPGs.

Thanx guys. I'm gonna go ahead and get the silver PS2 (it'll match my platinum 'Cube nicely.) I have a question, should I pre-order it from somewhere like EB or Gamestop? Or should I just be able to pick one up when it's released without a pre-order? I go past an EB every day on my way to work so I'd like to buy one there if possible.

Also, RPG recs?

I don't think it will be necessary to pre-order a silver PS2 - Best Buy, Circuit City, and the like will have plenty. Down here in south FL, a chain called Brandsmart USA has been selling new PS2's for $99 for awhile now - maybe a price drop is imminent nationwide since Sony won't have a big supply of PS3s this Christmas and will want to keep people from buying a Wii or 360.

Anyway, I recommend Dragon Quest VIII. Very old-school RPG with well-designed overworld and a humorous story. Final Fantasy X is good if you're into melodrama. Both can be found for $10-20 each.

Yeah, there is no reason to not have a PS2 right now, they are cheap and have an amazing library of games, especially RPGs. And we most likely won't see a price drop for the PS3 for another year or two, if that.

I just got a PS2 in June after holding off for 6 years. I got me Resident Evil 4, Jak 2, Socom 3, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, and GoW all dirt cheap.

Check out wildarms : Alter code F
(19.99 at eb.gamestop price dropped from 49.99 recently)
its a remake of the ps1 wildarms 1 game. and its great.

Also i would get the silver ps2.
i was reading the silver ps2 won't play some PS2 games, like Tekken 5 and has problems with a lot of PS1 games.
Got a link? I was planning on giving one as a Christmas present. I'll just get the regular black if there's gonna be DREs on current-gen games. It was bad enough when my big PS2 wouldn't read Virtua Fighter 4 but if a silver PS2 can't play Tekken 5 and lot of other games, it'll be a big waste of money.

I'd buy one now...try to get it at ToysRUs when they got that "free 30 dollar giftcard" Comes out to only 100 canadian since you'll buy games there eventually anyway.
